Book Beliefs Reasoning and Decision Making

Download or read book Beliefs Reasoning and Decision Making written by Roger C. Schank and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2013-06-17 with total page 437 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is not unusual for a festschrift to include offerings from several areas of study, but it is highly unusual for those areas to cross disciplinary lines. This book, in doing just that, is a testimony to Bob Abelson's impact on the disciplines of social psychology, artificial intelligence and cognitive science, and the applied areas of political psychology and decision-making. The contributors demonstrate that their association with Abelson, whether as students or colleagues, has resulted in an impressive intellectual cross-fertilization.

Martjie ends up in one of the carriages – with a circus lion! Soon, she gets to know the circus owners, Mister and Madam Pagel, and the other performers at the famous Pagel’s Circus. Mister Pagel is the world’s strongest man and sticks his head inside the lion’s jaws during every performance. Madame Pagel drives to the bank with a lion sitting next to her in the car. And plain old Martjie knows her life will never be the same again. This exciting novel is loosely based on the history of the Pagel Circus, which was known in every South African city and town in the previous century. Download or read book Circus Life written by Micah D. Childress and published by Univ. of Tennessee Press. This book was released on 2023-08-18 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The nineteenth century saw the American circus move from a reviled and rejected form of entertainment to the “Greatest Show on Earth.” Circus Life by Micah D. Childress looks at this transition from the perspective of the people who owned and worked in circuses and how they responded to the new incentives that rapid industrialization made possible. The circus has long been a subject of fascination for many, as evidenced by the millions of Americans that have attended circus performances over many decades since 1870, when the circus established itself as a truly unique entertainment enterprise. Yet the few analyses of the circus that do exist have only examined the circus as its own closed microcosm—the “circus family.” Circus Life, on the other hand, places circus employees in the larger context of the history of US workers and corporate America. Focusing on the circus as a business-entertainment venture, Childress pushes the scholarship on circuses to new depths, examining the performers, managers, and laborers’ lives and how the circus evolved as it grew in popularity over time. Beginning with circuses in the antebellum era, Childress examines changes in circuses as gender balances shifted, industrialization influenced the nature of shows, and customers and crowds became increasingly more middle-class. As a study in sport and social history, Childress’s account demonstrates how the itinerant nature of the circus drew specific types of workers and performers, and how the circus was internally in constant upheaval due to the changing profile of its patrons and a changing economy. MICAH D. CHILDRESS received his PhD in history from Purdue University and currently works as a Realtor® in Grand Rapids, Michigan. His articles have appeared in Popular Entertainment Studies and American Studies.

Book Dictionary of the Vulgar Tongue

Download or read book Dictionary of the Vulgar Tongue written by Francis Grose and published by The Floating Press. This book was released on 2014-02-01 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout history, most dictionaries have served the purpose of preserving the purity of the language, usually preferring the erudite vocabulary of the affluent upper classes to the salty, constantly evolving slang of their working-class counterparts. That began to change in the early modern period, when several innovative lexicographers began publishing collections of slang terms used by particular subcultures, such as criminals. According to scholars, Francis Grose's Dictionary of the Vulgar Tongue is one of the most important and complete of these early slang dictionaries. Spend some time with this fascinating volume to learn the slang definitions of words and phrases like "poisoned" (pregnant), "shooting the cat" (vomiting after excess alcohol consumption), and "snoozing ken" (a brothel).

Book Eddie Brown s Dictionary of Circus and Carnival Slang

Download or read book Eddie Brown s Dictionary of Circus and Carnival Slang written by Eddie Brown and published by . This book was released on 1939 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The nucleus of this book was begun during the 1935 San Diego Exposition. The General Manager of the Exposition, Mr. Zack Farmer, requested that I draw up a list of the various circus and carnival slang words, together with their meanings, in order to help clarify the conversation that were taking place. Realizing that other people, as well as Mr. Farmer, would also have a hard time understanding show people's lingo, I had such a slit mimeographed. This book is an outgrowth of that first list"--p.1.
