Book excerpt: "This electrifying debut thriller delivers a gripping tale of Big Brother gone mad amid a world in peril. Brimming with high-powered suspense, here is the shockingly believable story of three masterminds locked on a breathtaking collision course that may determine the very fate of the United States." "Twenty-two-year-old Jeannie Reese is a computer wunderkind - and the top architect of next-generation security for the government. Her latest brainchild, IRIN, is the most powerful surveillance technology ever developed. On the day of a horrific act of terrorism strikes the U.S., Jeannie's creation is put to work." "Known only as Phr33k, John Fagan is a legendary, reclusive computer hacker. For years he has remained unidentified despite his infamy as the author of a slew of electronic crimes - and his now eerily prophetic, scenarios of warfare against America. But Phr33k is being held by a vast terrorist network that plans to use his genius to deliver a final, fatal blow: a nationwide wave of unparalleled destruction. In his greatest challenge yet, Fagan must find a way to provide Jeannie Reese with one impossible shot to short-circuit the unstoppable scheme he so masterfully - and so unwillingly - helped to create."

Book excerpt: This electrifying debut thriller delivers a gripping tale of Big Brother gone mad amid a modern world on the verge of endless war. Brimming with high-powered suspense, here is the brilliant, frighteningly believable story of three masterminds locked on a breathtaking collision cours—the outcome of which will determine the fate of the United States. Circumference of Darkness Twenty-two-year-old Jeannie Reese is a computer wunderkind—and the top architect of next-generation security for the Department of Defense. Her latest brainchild is IRIN, the most powerful surveillance technology ever developed. To date, IRIN has remained ultraclassified and inactive. But on the day a shocking act of terrorism strikes U.S. shores, the presidential order comes to launch Jeannie’s creation against the dark forces behind the attack. Known only as Phr33k, forty-one-year-old John Fagan is a legendary, reclusive computer hacker. For years he has expertly hidden himself while operating freely within the shadows of the Internet’s background noise. He has remained in complete seclusion despite his infamy as the author of a slew of massive electronic crimes—and despite his long-ago, now eerily prophetic, scenarios of terrorist warfare against America. Under Jeannie’s direction, IRIN gathers and analyzes endless data—and unearths Phr33k. If she is to stop the next stage of a terror campaign clearly begun years before, Jeannie will have to find the überhacker; but that is only the beginning. For she soon discovers that Phr33k is being held by the leader of a vast terrorist network, who now plans to use this unique genius to conceive and deliver his final, fatal blow: a devastating nationwide wave of unparalleled destruction. For his part, Phr33k is used to working alone. But all that will have to change. He has a new challenge, one unlike any he’s faced before: how to provide Jeannie Reese with one outrageous, impossible shot to short-circuit the perfect, unstoppable scheme he so masterfully—and so unwillingly—helped to create.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Self-Disclosure of God offers the most detailed presentation to date in any Western language of the basic teachings of Islam's greatest mystical philosopher and theologian. It represents a major step forward in making available to the Western reading public the enormous riches of Islamic teachings in the fields of cosmology, mystical philosophy, theology, and spirituality. The Self-Disclosure of God continues the author's investigations of the world view of Ibn al-ʿArabī, the greatest theoretician of Sufism and the "seal of the Muhammadan saints." The book is divided into three parts, dealing with the relation between God and the cosmos, the structure of the cosmos, and the nature of the human soul. A long introduction orients the reader and discusses a few of the difficulties faced by Ibn al-ʿArabī's interpreters. Like Chittick's earlier work, The Sufi Path of Knowledge, this book is based primarily on Ibn al-ʿArabī's monumental work, al-Futūḥāt al-Makkīyah "The Meccan Openings." More than one hundred complete chapters and subsections are translated, not to mention shorter passages that help put the longer discussions in context. There are detailed indices of sources, Koranic verses and hadiths. The book's index of technical terminology will be an indispensable reference for all those wishing to delve more deeply into the use of language in Islamic thought in general and Sufism in particular.

Book excerpt: From the authors of the “excellent” Mr. and Mrs. North Mysteries: Captain Heimrich discovers a fire is a smoke screen for murder (TheNew Yorker). Capt. M. L. Heimrich of the New York State Police may not have the flash of hard-boiled city detectives, but there’s no lead the intrepid investigator won’t follow until his every hunch is satisfied . . . Captain Heimrich expects little excitement when he attends the Van Brunt town meeting while visiting his niece and her husband. But when the assembly is cut short due to a raging fire, things get quite exciting indeed. Half the attendees rush out to fulfill their duties as volunteer firefighters, and the rest follow to see the spectacle of a firehouse ablaze. The flames rage, burning the building to the ground, but it’s not until the next day that the body of town supervisor Orville Phipps is found in the charred ruins. While it all looks like a tragic accident, Heimrich knows Phipps wasn’t much loved by some of the residents in Van Brunt. His suspicion that the fire was set to cover up a murder is confirmed when it becomes clear that Phipps was shot. Now, it’s up to Heimrich to smoke out a match-happy murderer. Burnt Offering is the 8th book in the Captain Heimrich Mysteries, but you may enjoy reading the series in any order.

Book excerpt: Journal for Star Wisdom 2015 includes articles of interest concerning star wisdom (Astrosophy), as well as a guide to the correspondences between stellar configurations during the life of Christ and those of today. This guide comprises a complete sidereal ephemeris and aspectarian, geocentric and heliocentric, for each day throughout the year. Published yearly, new editions are available beginning in October or November for the coming new year. According to Rudolf Steiner, every step taken by Christ during his ministry between the baptism in the Jordan and the resurrection was in harmony with--and an expression of--the cosmos. The Journal for Star Wisdom is concerned with these heavenly correspondences during the life of Christ. It is intended to help provide a foundation for cosmic Christianity, the cosmic dimension of Christianity. It is this dimension that has been missing from Christianity in its two-thousand-year history. Readers can begin on this path by contemplating the movements of the Sun, Moon, and planets against the background of the zodiacal constellations (sidereal signs) today in relation to corresponding stellar events during the life of Christ. In this way, the possibility is opened for attuning, in a living way, to the life of Christ in the etheric cosmos. This journal begins with an article on the relationship between the zodiacal ages and the cultural epochs by Robert Powell, followed by Estelle Isaacson's article about the early stages of Christ's Ascension into cosmic dimensions. Claudia McLaren Lainson's article relates events of our time against the background of St. Paul's experience of Christ at the gates of Damascus. Richard Tarnas's article, "The Evolving Tradition," offers important perspectives on the development of astrology in our time. Also included is an article by Kevin Dann, which considers the universal significance of the vortex, following up on an indication by Rudolf Steiner. Nicholas Kollerstrom contributed the article "Power of the Sun," discussing research into a new understanding of our Sun. There are also two articles by Brian Keats that contribute to research into aspects of biodynamic farming in connection with cosmic rhythms. The monthly commentaries for 2015 are by Claudia McLaren Lainson, supported by monthly astronomical previews provided by Sally Nurney that offer opportunities to observe and experi-ence the stellar conÿ gurations physically during 2015. This direct interaction between human beings on Earth and the heavenly beings of the stars develops our capacity to receive their wisdom-filled teachings.

Book Galileo s Visions

    Book Details:
  • Author : Marco Piccolino
  • Publisher : OUP Oxford
  • Release : 2013-12-05
  • ISBN : 0191510793
  • Pages : 337 pages

Download or read book Galileo s Visions written by Marco Piccolino and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2013-12-05 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Galileo is known as a pioneer of science - especially of mechanics and astronomy - but far less attention has been paid to his work on the senses generally, and more specifically on vision. In this book, two experts on the history of science look at the novel ways in which Galileo looked at the heavens through his telescope, and, in the process, emphasised the importance of contrast phenomena and visual resolution for all observations. He also described the senses and perception in terms that found an echo in doctrines advanced by nineteenth century sensory physiologists. In a fascinating and accessible style, Marco Piccolino and Nick Wade analyse the scientific and philosophical work of Galileo Galilei from the particular viewpoint of his approach to the senses (and especially vision) as a means of acquiring trustworthy knowledge about the constitution of the world. For Galileo evidence from the senses was potentially ambiguous, hence reliable information capable of penetrating the complexity of reality could only be obtained by interpreting the sensory data critically. The philosophical background of Galileo's attitude to the senses was his awareness that nature had not developed a specific language aimed at communicating with senses generally and human senses in particular. Galileo's analysis of the senses corresponded closely to a fundamental tenet of modern sensory physiology and psychophysics - the absence in the world of specific sensory signals like sounds, colours, tastes, and odours. Fully illustrated throughout, this book is an important contribution to psychology and the vision sciences, but more broadly to our knowledge of a pioneering figure in the history of science.
