Book Circulatory System Dynamics

Download or read book Circulatory System Dynamics written by Abraham Noordergraaf and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Circulatory System Dynamics reviews cardiovascular dynamics from the analytical viewpoint and indicates ways in which the accumulated knowledge can be expanded and applied to further enhance understanding of the normal mammalian circulation, to ascertain the nature of difficulties associated with disease, and to test the effect of treatment. Comprised of 10 chapters, this volume begins with an overview of the circulatory system, including its anatomy and the trigger for myocardial (heart muscle) contraction. The discussion then turns to measurement of blood pressure using invasive and non-invasive techniques; blood flow measurement, with emphasis on cardiac output and measurement in the microcirculation; the system and pulmonary arterial trees; and pulsatile pressure and flow in pulmonary veins. Subsequent chapters explore microcirculation and the anatomy of the microvasculature; the heart and coronary circulation, paying particular attention to the Frank-Starling mechanism and indices of myocardial "contractility"; and control of blood pressure, peripheral resistance, and cerebral flow. The last two chapters deal with circulatory assistance and the closed cardiovascular system. This book will be of interest to students, practitioners, and researchers in fields ranging from physiology and biology to biochemistry and biophysics.

Book Regulation of Tissue Oxygenation Second Edition

Download or read book Regulation of Tissue Oxygenation Second Edition written by Roland N. Pittman and published by Biota Publishing. This book was released on 2016-08-18 with total page 117 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This presentation describes various aspects of the regulation of tissue oxygenation, including the roles of the circulatory system, respiratory system, and blood, the carrier of oxygen within these components of the cardiorespiratory system. The respiratory system takes oxygen from the atmosphere and transports it by diffusion from the air in the alveoli to the blood flowing through the pulmonary capillaries. The cardiovascular system then moves the oxygenated blood from the heart to the microcirculation of the various organs by convection, where oxygen is released from hemoglobin in the red blood cells and moves to the parenchymal cells of each tissue by diffusion. Oxygen that has diffused into cells is then utilized in the mitochondria to produce adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the energy currency of all cells. The mitochondria are able to produce ATP until the oxygen tension or PO2 on the cell surface falls to a critical level of about 4–5 mm Hg. Thus, in order to meet the energetic needs of cells, it is important to maintain a continuous supply of oxygen to the mitochondria at or above the critical PO2 . In order to accomplish this desired outcome, the cardiorespiratory system, including the blood, must be capable of regulation to ensure survival of all tissues under a wide range of circumstances. The purpose of this presentation is to provide basic information about the operation and regulation of the cardiovascular and respiratory systems, as well as the properties of the blood and parenchymal cells, so that a fundamental understanding of the regulation of tissue oxygenation is achieved.

This book was released on 2012-02-01 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vortex Formation in the Cardiovascular System will recapitulate the current knowledge about the vortex formation in the cardiovascular system, from mechanics to cardiology. This can facilitate the interaction between basic scientists and clinicians on the topic of the circulatory system. The book begins with a synopsis of the fundamentals aspects of fluid mechanics to give the reader the essential background to address the proceeding chapters. Then the fundamental elements of vortex dynamics will be discussed, explaining the conditions for their formation and the rules governing their dynamics. The main equations are accompanied by mathematical models. Cardiovascular vortex formation is first analyzed in physiological, healthy conditions in the heart chambers and in the large arterial vessels. The analysis is initially presented with an intuitive appeal grounded on the physical phenomena and a focus on its clinical significance. In the proceeding chapters, the knowledge gained from either clinical or basic science literature will be discussed. The corresponding mathematical elements will finally be presented to ensure the adequate diligence. The proceeding chapters ensue to the analysis of pathological conditions, when the reader may have developed the ability to recognize normal from abnormal vortex formation phenomenon. Pathological vortex formation represents vortices that develop at sites where normally laminar flow should exist, e.g. stenosis and aneurisms. This analysis naturally leads to the interaction of vortices due to the surgical procedures with respect to prediction of changes in vortex formation. The existing techniques, from medical imaging to numerical simulations, to explore vortex flows in the cardiovascular systems will also be described. The presentations are accompanied by the mathematical definitions can that be understandable for reader without the advanced mathematical background, while an interested reader with more advanced knowledge in mathematics can be referred to references for further quantitative analyses. The book pursues the objective to transfer the fundamental vortex formation phenomena with application to the cardiovascular system to the reader. Book Cardiac Dynamics

    Book Details:
  • Author : J. Baan
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2012-12-06
  • ISBN : 940098796X
  • Pages : 539 pages

Download or read book Cardiac Dynamics written by J. Baan and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 539 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cardiac Dynamics is the name of a relatively young field of study, born from the fruitful interaction between branches of two different disciplines: medicine and physics. "Dynamics" is the branch of physics which deals with the action of forces on bodies or particles in motion or at rest. "Cardiac" relates to the clinical field of cardiology but also to cardiophysiology, both of which are specialized branches of medicine. Narrower than the well established field of Hemodynamics, Cardiac Dynamics is restricted to dynamic phenomena occurring in and around the heart. The mathematical treatment of such phenomena, however, is vastly more complex because of the intricate nature of the mechanisms involved in the cardiac action. Thus, whereas hemodynamics is concerned with predominantly passive (visco-) elastic structures - vessels - containing time-variant flow of viscous flui- blood -, the mechanical study of the heart requires additional con siderations such as: active elastic components representing the contractile mechanism of cardiac muscle, complex geometry and fiber structure in the myocardial wall, autoregulatory mechanisms, and intricate flow patterns associated with valve motion. Viewed in this light it is not surprising that attempts to describe ventricular pump function and to quantify contractile performance have not reached the level of sophistication which is common in e. g. arterial hemodynamics. For the same reason, many of the often simplified approaches to describe ventricular mechanics failed to stand up to more rigorous theoretical, experimental or clinical testing.

Book Cardiovascular System Dynamics

Download or read book Cardiovascular System Dynamics written by Jan Baan and published by MIT Press (MA). This book was released on 1978 with total page 640 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a novel approach to the study of the mammalian cardiovascular system. Instead of focusing on a particular part of the system or on a particular group of techniques, or approaching the system from a particular point of view, it stresses a balanced presentation of ideas: —all the major component parts of the system are discussed, as well as the behavior of the system as an integrated whole —both basic and clinical viewpoints are represented —both detailed analysis and comprehensive synthesis are offered. In addition, trends in modern instrumentation and the use of computers in improving patient care are important and recurrent themes. Spirited discussions of current controversies and philosophies highlight the presentations. The 62 papers in this volume were invited for a major international conference, held in April 1975, which marked the coming of age of this field and led to the founding of the Cardiovascular System Dynamics Society. The conference brought together outstanding researchers in the life sciences (biology, physiology, medicine) and the physical sciences (biophysics, bioengineering) in order to integrate their findings more intricately and to chart the present state and future directions of the field. Since the cardiovascular system has been one of the first areas to receive attention under the newly emerging symbiosis between engineering and medicine, the book also serves a useful secondary purpose as a model of what can be accomplished by such integrated effort. The papers are organized into 12 sections. The first 9 offer a tour of the cardiovascular system, with papers arranged within each section to lead the reader from theoretical to clinical viewpoints. Included are sections on cardiac muscle, coronary circulation, ventricular dynamics, systemic arterial tree, microcirculation, systemic veins, pulmonary vasculature, control mechanisms in specific vascular beds, and cardiovascular system control. The last 3 sections offer tutorial overviews of theoretical and experimental methods applied to the cardiovascular system and of cardiovascular instrumentation and computer analysis.
