Download or read book Regulation of Tissue Oxygenation Second Edition written by Roland N. Pittman and published by Biota Publishing. This book was released on 2016-08-18 with total page 117 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This presentation describes various aspects of the regulation of tissue oxygenation, including the roles of the circulatory system, respiratory system, and blood, the carrier of oxygen within these components of the cardiorespiratory system. The respiratory system takes oxygen from the atmosphere and transports it by diffusion from the air in the alveoli to the blood flowing through the pulmonary capillaries. The cardiovascular system then moves the oxygenated blood from the heart to the microcirculation of the various organs by convection, where oxygen is released from hemoglobin in the red blood cells and moves to the parenchymal cells of each tissue by diffusion. Oxygen that has diffused into cells is then utilized in the mitochondria to produce adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the energy currency of all cells. The mitochondria are able to produce ATP until the oxygen tension or PO2 on the cell surface falls to a critical level of about 4–5 mm Hg. Thus, in order to meet the energetic needs of cells, it is important to maintain a continuous supply of oxygen to the mitochondria at or above the critical PO2 . In order to accomplish this desired outcome, the cardiorespiratory system, including the blood, must be capable of regulation to ensure survival of all tissues under a wide range of circumstances. The purpose of this presentation is to provide basic information about the operation and regulation of the cardiovascular and respiratory systems, as well as the properties of the blood and parenchymal cells, so that a fundamental understanding of the regulation of tissue oxygenation is achieved.

Download or read book The Lung Circulation written by Domingo M. Aviado and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 836 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Lung Circulation, Volume 2: Pathologic Physiology and Therapy of Diseases considers the reactions of various cardiovascular and bronchopulmonary drugs for certain lung-related diseases. This book is organized into three sections encompassing 15 chapters that also cover the etiology of acute cardiopulmonary diseases and chronic pulmonary hypertension. The first section reviews the benefits of five pulmonary treatment options, including musculotropic vasodilators and vasoconstrictors; general anesthetics and adjuvants; antitussives, expectorants, and antiallergens; Digitalis, glycosides, and quinidine; and medical and surgical procedures. The second section describes the pathologic physiology and pathogenesis of some acute cardiopulmonary diseases, such as acute injuries, systemic shock, acute pulmonary edema, pulmonary embolism, and other localized pulmonary diseases. The third section surveys numerous studies on the chronic pulmonary hypertension. This book is directed toward pulmonologists.

Download or read book Techniques in Extracorporeal Circulation 4E written by Philip Kay and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2004-04-30 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Extracorporeal circulation has become firmly established as an invaluable and routine adjunct to cardiac and vascular surgery. Since its introduction in 1953, the technique has evolved rapidly with advancing technology leading to improvements in and simplification of the equipment involved. Developments in the understanding and application of basic science have also had a huge impact as our understanding of the complex anatomy, biochemistry, pharmacology and pathophysiology of the heart continues to grow. It is these advances in both technology and science that form the basis of this fourth edition of Techniques in Extracorporeal Cirulation. The book continues to provide a comprehensive overview of the field, covering both established techniques for those new to the field of extracorporeal circulation, and current and future developments. It attempts to answer some of the innumerable practical problems associated with the routine use of artificial circulation and oxygenation, and hopes to stimulate thought and debate among its readers regarding more complex or controversial issues. Topics new to the fourth edition include robotic surgery and off-pump surgery, while other chapters have been thoroughly revised and updated to take into account developments and changes in the field. With its multidisciplinary approach, the book will remain an essential reference for all health care professionals working in the cardiac surgical operating room, in particular cardiothoracic surgeons, anaesthetists and perfusionists.

Download or read book Circulation Weather types as a tool in atmospheric climate and environmental research written by Alexandre M. Ramos and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2015-09-11 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Classifications of circulation weather systems have a long history in meteorology and climatology. Starting with manual classifications over specific regions of the globe, these tools (generally called “catalogs of synoptic types”) were restricted mainly to weather forecasting and historical climate variability studies. In the last decades, the advance of computing resources and the availability of datasets have fostered the development of fast and objective methods that process large amount of data. In recent years numerous methods of circulation type classification have been designed, showing their usefulness on a wide range of applications in scientific domains related to weather, climate, and environment. This Research Topic highlights methodological advances in circulation weather types and also their applications to different research areas. The articles included in this research topic show that circulation weather types can be used not only in Europe, where they have been always more frequent, but also applied to other regions of the world.
Download or read book Principles of Miniaturized ExtraCorporeal Circulation written by Kyriakos Anastasiadis and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-13 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Minimal extracorporeal circulation (MECC) systems have been designed in order to reduce dramatically the side-effects of conventional extracorporeal circulation while serving as a safe perfusion technique for open heart surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass. The book aims to provide an up-to-date and comprehensive overview covering practical advice on how to use MECC systems for those new to the field as well as tips, pitfalls, results, and latest developments. It also offers a systematic review of all published studies on a variety of MECC systems. The book will enable physicians to gain a better understanding of these new systems as well as to understand the rationale for their use in cardiac surgery. MECC requires a multidisciplinary approach, and this book will serve as an essential reference for all health care professionals working in the cardiac surgical operating room, in particular cardiothoracic surgeons, anesthesiologists, and perfusionists
Download or read book The Circulation of Agency in E Justice written by Francesco Contini and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-19 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contributes to an understanding of the dynamic complexities involved in the design of e-justice applications that enable online trans-border judicial proceedings in Europe. It provides answers to critical questions with practical relevance: How should online trans-border judicial proceedings be designed in order to deliver effective and timely justice to European citizens, businesses and public agencies? How can the circulation of judicial agency across Europe be facilitated? Based on extensive research, the book explores and assesses the complex entanglements between law and technology, and between national and European jurisdictions that emerge when developing even relatively simple e-services such as those supporting the European small claims procedure and European payment orders. In addition to providing a strong theoretical framework and an innovative approach to e-justice design, this book includes case studies that are based on a common methodology and theoretical framework. It presents original empirical material on the development of e-government systems in the area of European justice. Finally, it introduces the design strategies of Maximum Feasible Simplicity and Maximum Manageable Complexity and, based on them, it proposes architectural and procedural solutions to enhance the circulation of judicial agency.
