  • Author : W. Mark Saltzman
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2001-03-15
  • ISBN : 019802469X
  • Pages : 385 pages

Download or read book Drug Delivery written by W. Mark Saltzman and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2001-03-15 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Synthetic materials are a tremendous potential resource for treating human disease. For the rational design of many of these biomaterials it is necessary to have an understanding of polymer chemistry and polymer physics. Equally important to those two fields is a quantitative understanding of the principles that govern rates of drug transport, reaction, and disappearance in physiological and pathological situations. This book is a synthesis of these principles, providing a working foundation for those in the field of drug delivery. It covers advanced drug delivery and contemporary biomaterials.

Book Regulation of Tissue Oxygenation Second Edition

Download or read book Regulation of Tissue Oxygenation Second Edition written by Roland N. Pittman and published by Biota Publishing. This book was released on 2016-08-18 with total page 117 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This presentation describes various aspects of the regulation of tissue oxygenation, including the roles of the circulatory system, respiratory system, and blood, the carrier of oxygen within these components of the cardiorespiratory system. The respiratory system takes oxygen from the atmosphere and transports it by diffusion from the air in the alveoli to the blood flowing through the pulmonary capillaries. The cardiovascular system then moves the oxygenated blood from the heart to the microcirculation of the various organs by convection, where oxygen is released from hemoglobin in the red blood cells and moves to the parenchymal cells of each tissue by diffusion. Oxygen that has diffused into cells is then utilized in the mitochondria to produce adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the energy currency of all cells. The mitochondria are able to produce ATP until the oxygen tension or PO2 on the cell surface falls to a critical level of about 4–5 mm Hg. Thus, in order to meet the energetic needs of cells, it is important to maintain a continuous supply of oxygen to the mitochondria at or above the critical PO2 . In order to accomplish this desired outcome, the cardiorespiratory system, including the blood, must be capable of regulation to ensure survival of all tissues under a wide range of circumstances. The purpose of this presentation is to provide basic information about the operation and regulation of the cardiovascular and respiratory systems, as well as the properties of the blood and parenchymal cells, so that a fundamental understanding of the regulation of tissue oxygenation is achieved.

This book was released on 2003-09-08 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Leading experts survey the currently available technologies designed to improve the delivery of today's cancer chemotherapeutic agents. The authors review both the theoretical and practical considerations governing conventional and nonconventional methods of drug administration, and identify promising opportunities for product development. In their outline and discussion of the use of novel formulation technologies-including synthetic polymers and biomaterials for prolonged or sustained drug release to achieve potentially greater therapeutic effect-they profile those technologies that have resulted in a number of approved and late-stage clinical products.

Book Platelet Membrane Glycoproteins

Download or read book Platelet Membrane Glycoproteins written by James N. George and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-13 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was just about ten years ago that platelet membrane glycoproteins were first charac terized and their abnormalities in congenital bleeding disorders first recognized. Dur ing this decade there has been a remarkable growth in our understanding of the structure and membrane organization of the platelet surface glycoproteins, their in teractions with external ligands during the process of hemostasis, and their defects causing hemorrhagic disease. These studies have advanced the knowledge of platelet involvement in hemostasis from a cellular to a molecular level, and they have provided a model for contact interactions among other cell types. This seemed a proper time to ask those who contributed major observations and insights during these past years to review their progress and to assess the state of our present knowledge. We have planned this volume to begin with the biochemistry of platelet membrane glycoproteins themselves and proceed through their involvement in platelet function to the final considerations of the platelet's role in maintaining the integrity of the vascular system. Our aim was an integrated presentation on the blood platelet from the perspective of its highly specialized and reactive cell surface. James N. George Alan T. Nurden David R. Phillips vii Contents I.
