Download or read book Ad Reinhardt written by Ad Reinhardt and published by Richter Verlag. This book was released on 2011 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The paintings of the American artist, Ad Reinhardt were from the start defined by their clear geometrical forms. Reinhardt, who before his training as a painter had received a degree in art history, rejected any kind of fusion between art and life or any mystification of painting. Around 1953 he did his first black paintings in which every tendency to colour seemed to fade. From 1960 his paintings were all only black, which he himself described as the 'last paintings that anyone can paint. 'The encounter between Ad Reinhardt and Josef Albers in 1952 - 1953 and their ensuing dialogues on the meaning of colour within the painting process were For The young Reinhardt an important impulse on his path towards his black paintings. Presented in this book is his oeuvre from the end of the 1930s To The late works; their special relevance can be recognised in juxtaposition with the works of Josef Albers.

Download or read book Museums in the Second World War written by Catherine Pearson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-06-26 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exploring the role of museums, galleries and curators during the upheaval of the Second World War, this book challenges the accepted view of a hiatus in museum services during the conflict and its immediate aftermath. Instead it argues that new thinking in the 1930s was realised in a number of promising initiatives during the war only to fail during the fragmented post-war recovery. Based on new research including interviews with retired museum staff, letters, diaries, museum archives and government records, this study reveals a complex picture of both innovation and inertia. At the outbreak of war precious objects were stored away and staff numbers reduced, but although many museums were closed, others successfully campaigned to remain open. By providing innovative modern exhibitions and education initiatives they became popular and valued venues for the public. After the war, however, museums returned to their more traditional, collections-centred approach and failed to negotiate the public funding needed for reconstruction based on this narrower view of their role. Hence, in the longer term, the destruction and economic and social consequences of the conflict served to delay aspirations for reconstruction until the 1960s. Through this lens, the history of the museum in the mid-twentieth century appears as one shaped by the effects of war but equally determined by the input of curators, audiences and the state. The museum thus emerges not as an isolated institution concerned only with presenting the past but as a product of the changing conflicts and cultures within society.

Download or read book Cold War Photographic Diplomacy written by Darren Newbury and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2024-01-31 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The emergence of newly independent African nations onto the world stage in the mid-twentieth century precipitated a contest for influence among Cold War superpowers, leading the United States to mount an international campaign of photographic diplomacy underpinned by a faith in the medium’s capacity to cross cultural boundaries. However, the increasing global visibility of racial injustice undermined US claims that the nation had transcended colonial racism. Drawing on extensive research in the archives of the United States Information Agency (USIA) and concentrating on the period from the mid-1950s through to the late 1960s, Darren Newbury traces the role of photography in the United States’ appeal to Africa. Newbury shows how photographing the political, cultural, and educational visits of Africans to the United States provided a space for the imagination of international cooperation and friendship; how the United States presented the civil rights struggle as an example of democracy in action; and how it pictured a world of integration and racial coexistence. Cold War Photographic Diplomacy chronicles this careful scripting of images and picture stories and details the cultural and pedagogical work that photography was expected to perform as it was inserted into the visual culture of African cities through magazines, posters, pamphlets, and window displays. Locating photography at the intersection of African decolonization, racial conflict in the United States, and the cultural Cold War, this study will especially appeal to students and scholars of the history of photography, American studies, and Africana studies.

Book excerpt: First published in 1997. For this second edition of Art Books: A Basic Bibliography of Monographs on Artists, the vast number of new books published since 1985 was surveyed and evaluated. This has resulted in the selection of 3,395 additional titles. These selections, reflective of the increase in the monographic literature on artists during the last ten years, are evidence of the activities of a larger number of art historians in more countries worldwide, of the increasingly diverse and ambitious exhibition programs of museums whose number has also increased dramatically, and also of a lively international art market and the attendant gallery activities. The selections of the first edition have been reviewed, errors have been corrected and important new editions and reprints have been noted. The second edition contains 278 names of artists not represented in the first edition.
