This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In classical analysis, there is a vast difference between the class of problems that may be handled by means of the methods of calculus and the class of problems requiring combinatorial techniques. With the advent of the digital computer, the distinction begins to blur, and with the increasing emphasis on problems involving optimization over structures, tIlE' distinction vanishes. What is necessary for the analytic and computational treatment of significant questions arising in modern control theory, mathematical economics, scheduling theory, operations research, bioengineering, and so forth is a new and more flexible mathematical theory which subsumes both the cla8sical continuous and discrete t 19orithms. The work by HAMMER (IVANESCU) and RUDEANU on Boolean methods represents an important step in this dnectlOn, and it is thus a great pleasure to welcome it into print. It will certainly stimulate a great deal of additional research in both theory and application. RICHARD BELLMAN University of Southern California FOf(,WOl'

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book constitutes an introduction to the theory of binary switch ing networks (binary logic circuits) such as are encountered in industrial automatic systems, in communications networks and, more particularly, in digital computers. These logic circuits, with or without memory, (sequential circuits, combinational circuits) play an increasing part in many sectors of in dustry. They are, naturally, to be found in digital computers where, by means of an assembly (often complex) of elerpentary circuits, the func tions of computation and decision which are basic to the treatment of information, are performed. In their turn these computers form the heart of an increasing number of digital systems to which they are coupled by interface units which, themselves, fulfil complex functions of information processing. Thus the digital techniques penetrate ever more deeply into industrial and scientific activities in the form of systems with varying degrees of specialization, from the wired-in device with fixed structure to those systems centered on a general-purpose programmable com puter. In addition, the present possibility of mass producing microminiaturi sed logic circuits (integrated circuits, etc. ) gives a foretaste of the intro duction of these techniques into the more familiar aspects of everyday life. The present work is devoted to an exposition of the algebraic techni ques nesessary for the study and synthesis of such logic networks. No previous knowledge of this field of activity is necessary: any technician or engineer possessing an elementary knowledge of mathematics and electronics can undertake its reading.

Download or read book Principles of Asynchronous Circuit Design written by Jens Sparsø and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Principles of Asynchronous Circuit Design - A Systems Perspective addresses the need for an introductory text on asynchronous circuit design. Part I is an 8-chapter tutorial which addresses the most important issues for the beginner, including how to think about asynchronous systems. Part II is a 4-chapter introduction to Balsa, a freely-available synthesis system for asynchronous circuits which will enable the reader to get hands-on experience of designing high-level asynchronous systems. Part III offers a number of examples of state-of-the-art asynchronous systems to illustrate what can be built using asynchronous techniques. The examples range from a complete commercial smart card chip to complex microprocessors. The objective in writing this book has been to enable industrial designers with a background in conventional (clocked) design to be able to understand asynchronous design sufficiently to assess what it has to offer and whether it might be advantageous in their next design task.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We shall begin this brief section with what we consider to be its objective. It will be followed by the main outline and then concluded by a few notes as to how this work should be used. Although logical systems have been manufactured for some time, the theory behind them is quite recent. Without going into historical digressions, we simply remark that the first comprehensive ideas on the application of Boolean algebra to logical systems appeared in the 1930's. These systems appeared in telephone exchanges and were realized with relays. It is only around 1955 that many articles and books trying to systematize the study of such automata, appeared. Since then, the theory has advanced regularly, but not in a way which satisfies those concerned with practical applications. What is serious, is that aside the books by Caldwell (which dates already from 1958), Marcus, and P. Naslin (in France), few works have been published which try to gather and unify results which can be used by the practis ing engineer; this is the objective of the present volumes.

Book excerpt: This book summarizes the history and present status and applications of Josephson junctions. These devices are leading elements in superconducting electronics and provide state-of-the-art performance in detection of small magnetic fields and currents, in several digital computing methods, and in medical diagnostic devices and now provide voltage standards used worldwide. Astronomical infrared (IR) telescopes, including the South Pole Telescope, use these junctions in combinations called superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDs).
Download or read book Smart Cards Tokens Security and Applications written by Keith Mayes and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-05-18 with total page 552 pages.
