Book Cinnamon s Swan Island Adventures on the Kennebec River in Maine

Download or read book Cinnamon s Swan Island Adventures on the Kennebec River in Maine written by T. Blen Parker and published by Swan Island Press. This book was released on 2022-07-18 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sights and sounds come alive via the story of how love, patience, and living on a magical island cured a child diagnosed as terminal. Faced with the grim diagnosis at age three, Cinnamon learns to read, journal, and write her own stories about island life. A patient grandmother homeschooled her on days traveling across the river was impossible; her grandfather shared his knowledge of managing the deer herd and other wildlife on the freshwater island. Trips down the Perkins Highway, the sole dirt road splitting the island in half, allowed daily opportunities to feed deer directly out of the truck window. Cinnamon imagined solitary games, wrote original stories, and became more vigorous and healthier as months and years passed. Befriending animals was easy when they became comfortable with her scents and habits. As an adult, she kayaks to the island to write while enjoying sitting in the Adirondack chairs provided at the Kennebec Riverside.

Book excerpt: The trilogy of historical novels invite readers to enter the world of the isolated island, where the village of Perkins Township was incorporated and thriving in 1847 but abandoned in 1938 when ferry service was discontinued, and continues throughout the time that the caretakers, Steve Powell and Parker Blen, farmed the island. The historical novel begins with the arrival of Englishmen at Sabino in 1607, encompasses the time period of first contact between coastal explorers and fur traders with Abenaki natives in the 1600's, (who named the island Sowan-gen=Swan, translated as tribe or gen from the island of eagles), and forward into the twenty first century.

Book All from a Walnut

Book excerpt: A moving, multigenerational story about love, family roots, and the cycle of life When Emilia finds a walnut one morning, Grandpa tells her the story behind it: of his journey across the ocean to a new home, with only one small bag and a nut in his pocket. “I planted my little tree in good brown soil, so it would grow strong here forever.” “In this house? In this yard?” “Shall we go see?” Step by step, Grandpa teaches Emilia how to cultivate her own seed. But as her little nut grows, Grandpa begins to slow down—until one sad day, Emilia has to say goodbye. Emilia’s sapling looks as droopy as she feels . . . but she knows just what to do. From acclaimed author and illustrator Ammi-Joan Paquette and Felicita Sala, this tender story is a poignant reminder that the best things grow with time—and that even when they are no longer here, the ones we love are always a part of us.

Book The Poetry of Pop

    Book Details:
  • Author : Adam Bradley
  • Publisher : Yale University Press
  • Release : 2017-03-28
  • ISBN : 0300165722
  • Pages : 425 pages

Download or read book The Poetry of Pop written by Adam Bradley and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2017-03-28 with total page 425 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A trailblazing exploration of the poetic power of popular songs, from Tin Pan Alley to the Beatles to Beyoncé and beyond. Encompassing a century of recorded music, this pathbreaking book reveals the poetic artistry of popular songs. Pop songs are music first. They also comprise the most widely disseminated poetic expression of our time. Adam Bradley traces the song lyric across musical genres from early twentieth-century Delta blues to mid-century rock 'n’ roll to today’s hits. George and Ira Gershwin’s “Fascinating Rhythm.” The Rolling Stones’ “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction.” Rihanna’s “Diamonds.” These songs are united in their exacting attention to the craft of language and sound. Bradley shows that pop music is a poetry that must be heard more than read, uncovering the rhythms, rhymes, and metaphors expressed in the singing voice. At once a work of musical interpretation, cultural analysis, literary criticism, and personal storytelling, this book illustrates how words and music come together to produce compelling poetry, often where we least expect it.
