Book Family Violence in the United States

Download or read book Family Violence in the United States written by Denise A. Hines and published by SAGE Publications. This book was released on 2020-08-24 with total page 705 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Family Violence in the United States takes an ecological approach to examining violence and abuse within the context of families. Easy-to-read chapters are organized by exploring the "Scope of the Problem", definitions of key terminology, predictors, and consequences of different forms of maltreatment. Attention is paid to larger social systems that can contribute to abuse, as well as community, relationship, and individual predictors of both perpetration and victimization. Additionally, there is an emphasis on both prevention and intervention of family violence at various levels of the ecological model. Authors Denise A. Hines, Kathleen Malley-Morrison, and Leila B. Dutton help students explore what family violence is and the reasons why it happens. Their approach covers contemporary and controversial topics across the lifespan, including maltreatment of male partners by women, of parents, within sexual minority relationships, and on college campuses. This 3rd edition is filled with chapter-opening cases to prompt discussion within the classroom as well as considerations of context and application in the larger community. Rich in scholarly references and case materials, it is suitable for advanced undergraduates, graduate students, and professionals alike.

Book Jane Eyre s American Daughters

Download or read book Jane Eyre s American Daughters written by John Seelye and published by University of Delaware Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jane Eyre's American Daughters is about the influence of Charlotte Bronte's romance on North American writers, including Susan Warner, Louisa May Alcott, Martha Finley, Frances Hodgson Burnett, Kate Douglas Wiggin, Jean Webster, Eleanor Porter, and L M Montgomery. John Seelye demonstrates that the reception of Bronte's Gothic romance in America was filtered through Elizabeth Gaskell's biography of the author, published shortly after her friend's death in 1855. A sentimental classic in its day, Gaskell's book promoted an image of Charlotte as a long-suffering creative genius with high moral standards. Her biography necessarily overlooked Bronte's obsessive love for her Belgian professor. Constantin Heger, an older and married man. Though Heger did not return Charlotte's affection, he was the model for the lovers in Bronte's novels, including the passionate, adulterous Edward Rochester, who inspired censorious reviews questioning the moral character of the author when Jane Eyre was published in 1847, a reputation that Gaskell's biography successfully countered.

Book Genetic Stigma in Law and Literature

Download or read book Genetic Stigma in Law and Literature written by Alice Diver and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2024-01-19 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book critically analyses the way in which traditional sociocultural and legal biases might be perpetuated against those with unknown – or unknowable – genetic ancestries. It looks to law and works of literature across differing eras and genres focussing upon such concepts as inherited stigma, illegitimacy, orphanisation, adoption, othering, reunion, and the ‘right’ to access truths that relate to one’s original identity. Law’s role in such matters is often limited (or usurped) by custom, practice, or lingering superstitious beliefs; the importance of oral and written testimony is therefore highlighted. Characters include abandoned or orphaned figures from folk and fairy tales, Romantic and Victorian monsters and heroes, Dickensian waifs, Edwardian rescue orphans, and dystopia-set ‘rebels.‘ Their insights and experiences are mirrored in various present day scenarios that speak to familial human rights abuses, not least forced adoptions and bars on accessing original information. This cross-disciplinary book drawing on Law, Literature, Sociology, Critical Adoption Studies should be of interest to those interested in and those who have been affected in some way by adoption, origin deprivation, or reunion.
