Download or read book Cincinnati From 1800 to 1875 written by E. H. Austerlitz and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cincinnati, From 1800 to 1875: A Condensed History of Cincinnate, Combined With Exposition Guide for 1875 For 1875, which we this day publish, is a work more unique, than any of the kind that has hitherto appeared. It is illustrated more fully than any other work published on Cincinnati. It embraces a catalogue of all the departments of the Exposition, a concise history of the City from its earliest settlement to the present time, with a review of its location, business, manufactories, etc., as well as a description of all the principal buildings, and objects of interest. We take this opportunity of expressing our grateful thanks to all the Commissioners of the Exposition, as well as to the Secretary, and especially to its President, Mr. John J. Henderson, for the facilities granted to us for the publication of the work, they having freely given us all the information in their possession in reference to the details of the Exposition. We submit this work to the public, with a full assurance that our labors will be appreciated, and that it will meet with a commensurate sale. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sketches and Statistics of Cincinnati in 1859 IN examining the present volume, it will not escape notice that many subjects comprehended in the preceding issues of 1841 and 1851 are either only briefly referred to, or entirely left out. My reasons for this, I trust, will be as satisfactory to my readers as they were conclusive on myself. I shall state them in as few words as possible. Book Cincinnati s Beginnings

Download or read book Cincinnati s Beginnings written by Francis W. Miller and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-18 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cincinnati's Beginnings: Missing Chapters in the Early History of the City and the Miami Purchase; Chiefly From Hitherto Unpublished Documents The first purchases from the Government, about the time of the commencement of its operation under the constitution, of lands in what was then called the Northwest Territory, with the attendant efforts for the establishment and maintenance of settlements therein are fairly to be reckoned among the notable occurrences of the earliest period of the history of the United States as a nation; and anything essential to the completing of the account of the transactions might be looked upon even from a national standpoint, as deserving of preservation. The new claimant to a separate and equal station in the political firmament having emerged triumphantly from the arduous struggle in arms for independence, popular effort is then soon seen directed to plans for the redemption of a continent from a waste by the arts of peace. Prominent in the van of such manifestations were two schemes of purchase and settlement, of the description referred to, viewed by some with prophetic ken in the day of their inception as fraught with promise for the future, and to which, when regarded in the light of results thus far, it could not be alleged there was ever attributed an undue significance. Fortunately for us we have a real seer in our midst, a see-er and interpreter of visions, a recorder of all that was, and is, and evermore shall be. Mr. Hurley commands two genii - the spirit of appreciation and the spirit of creation. I think his jar is a Rookwood one. Book Classical Savannah

    Book Details:
  • Author :
  • Publisher : University of Georgia Press

  • ISBN : 9780820317939
  • Pages : 204 pages

Download or read book Classical Savannah written by and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 1995 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By the end of the eighteenth century, classicism, which arose out of Europe's fascination with ancient Greece and Rome, had also left its mark on America. This study of the classical style in the fine and decorative arts shows the extent to which it influenced the material culture of Savannah, Georgia, from 1800 to 1840. More than 130 examples of objects owned in Savannah in this period are illustrated, described, and discussed. The objects include oil paintings and watercolors, clocks, musical instruments, jewelry, sculptures, engravings, bank notes, needlework, china, silver, brass, lighting fixtures, architectural elements, and furniture. Page Talbott presents an overview of the origins of classicism in Europe and its spread to America. Emphasizing Americans' close identification of classicism with national values and ideals, Talbott also discusses the style in the context of Savannah's social life and its history as a major southern port. She covers not only the principles, methods, and materials of classical design, but also the manufacture, distribution, sale, and ownership of a wide range of functional and decorative objects. Classical Savannah is the companion volume to the Classical Savannah exhibition, which opened in the spring of 1995 at the Telfair Museum of Art in Savannah. Illustrating well over half of the items in the exhibit, and including a detailed checklist of the additional seventy objects not shown in the book, Classical Savannah is a valuable source for historians, designers, decorators, collectors, and anyone interested in this period of America's history.

Book That Greece Might Still be Free

Download or read book That Greece Might Still be Free written by William St. Clair and published by Open Book Publishers. This book was released on 2008 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When in 1821, the Greeks rose in violent revolution against the rule of the Ottoman Turks, waves of sympathy spread across Western Europe and the United States. More than a thousand volunteers set out to fight for the cause. The Philhellenes, whether they set out to recreate the Athens of Pericles, start a new crusade, or make money out of a war, all felt that Greece had unique claim on the sympathy of the world. As Byron wrote, 'I dreamed that Greece might Still be Free'; and he died at Missolonghi trying to translate that dream into reality. William St Clair's meticulously researched and highly readable account of their aspirations and experiences was hailed as definitive when it was first published. Long out of print, it remains the standard account of the Philhellenic movement and essential reading for any students of the Greek War of Independence, Byron, and European Romanticism. Its relevance to more modern ethnic and religious conflicts is becoming increasingly appreciated by scholars worldwide. This new and revised edition includes a new Introduction by Roderick Beaton, an updated Bibliography and many new illustrations.
