I've been called all these things by the members of the two wolf packs who rule my world because I'm an oddity- a pure blood human. As a child, only the leader of the Thieves Guild was willing to take me in after my grandmother died, and I've spent my entire life using the skills he taught to become his most reliable thief. When the wolf packs discover that their bloodlines are losing the ability to shift from wolf to human, I suddenly become a prize worth fighting over. The only problem is I'm cursed. No one can touch me unless I want them to. If they try, the strange spell surrounding me begins to leech their life-force, killing them if they don't release their hold. What I once viewed as an affliction is now my greatest weapon. Now, the two warring kingdoms need me to preserve their humanity, and I have two alphas vying for the right to call me his queen. Damon, the king of the midnight pack who rule the day as humans and shift into their wolf forms at nightfall, is known to be ruthless, cruel, and selfish, but if he truly wants me to rule by his side, he'll have to show me that he's more than just a tyrant. Simon, the king of the dawn pack who rule the night as humans and shift into wolves at the breaking of dawn, is charming to the point of distraction, but behind those bright blue eyes and easy grin lurks a secret that might just undo us all. Each man may want to claim me as his, but they’ll have to try and win my heart first. Good luck with that…

I have to convince Alek that the real cure lies within the Barrens where Margaret discovered the elixir. Who knew my humanity would become my greatest gift and my worst nightmare? Can Damon rescue me before Alek forces me to become his mate for life? Or will I be doomed to live on the high seas forever and never again see the one man who has captured my heart? Damon There is nowhere Alek can take Ivy that I won’t venture to. It’s not a matter of if I will get her back. It’s a matter of when. Download or read book Technics and Civilization written by Lewis Mumford and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2010-10-30 with total page 524 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Technics and Civilization first presented its compelling history of the machine and critical study of its effects on civilization in 1934—before television, the personal computer, and the Internet even appeared on our periphery. Drawing upon art, science, philosophy, and the history of culture, Lewis Mumford explained the origin of the machine age and traced its social results, asserting that the development of modern technology had its roots in the Middle Ages rather than the Industrial Revolution. Mumford sagely argued that it was the moral, economic, and political choices we made, not the machines that we used, that determined our then industrially driven economy. Equal parts powerful history and polemic criticism, Technics and Civilization was the first comprehensive attempt in English to portray the development of the machine age over the last thousand years—and to predict the pull the technological still holds over us today. “The questions posed in the first paragraph of Technics and Civilization still deserve our attention, nearly three quarters of a century after they were written.”—Journal of Technology and Culture

Book excerpt: The German missionary Carl Strehlow (1871-1922) had a deep ethnographic interest in Aboriginal Australian cosmology and social life which he documented in his 7 volume work Die Aranda- und Loritja-Stämme in Zentral-Australien that remains unpublished in English. In 1913, Marcel Mauss called his collection of sacred songs and myths, an Australian Rig Veda. This immensely rich corpus, based on a lifetime on the central Australian frontier, is barely known in the English-speaking world and is the last great body of early Australian ethnography that has not yet been built into the world of Australian anthropology and its intellectual history. The German psychological and hermeneutic traditions of anthropology that developed outside of a British-Australian intellectual world were alternatives to 19th century British scientism. The intellectual roots of early German anthropology reached back to Johann Gottfried Herder (1744-1803), the founder of German historical particularism, who rejected the concept of race as well as the French dogma of the uniform development of civilisation. Instead he recognised unique sets of values transmitted through history and maintained that cultures had to be viewed in terms of their own development and purpose. Thus, humanity was made up of a great diversity of ways of life, language being one of its main manifestations. It is this tradition that led to a concept of cultures in the plural.

Book The Pirates and the Mouse

Download or read book The Pirates and the Mouse written by Bob Levin and published by Fantagraphics Books. This book was released on 2003-07-09 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During a time of unprecedented political, social, and cultural upheaval in U.S. history, one of the fiercest battles was ignited by a comic book. In 1963, the San Francisco Chronicle made 21-year-old Dan O'Neill the youngest syndicated cartoonist in American newspaper history. As O'Neill delved deeper into the emerging counterculture, his strip, Odd Bodkins, became stranger and stranger and more and more provocative, until the papers in the syndicate dropped it and the Chronicle let him go. The lesson that O'Neill drew from this was that what America most needed was the destruction of Walt Disney. O'Neill assembled a band of rogue cartoonists called the Air Pirates (after a group of villains who had bedeviled Mickey Mouse in comic books and cartoons). They lived communally in a San Francisco warehouse owned by Francis Ford Coppola and put out a comic book, Air Pirates Funnies, that featured Disney characters participating in very un-Disneylike behavior, provoking a mammoth lawsuit for copyright and trademark infringements and hundreds of thousands of dollars in damages. Disney was represented by one of San Francisco's top corporate law firms and the Pirates by the cream of the counterculture bar. The lawsuit raged for 10 years, from the trial court to the US Supreme Court and back again.
