Book The Architecture of Wales

Download or read book The Architecture of Wales written by John B. Hilling and published by University of Wales Press. This book was released on 2018-08-15 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Architecture reflects not only a nation’s history, but also how its people lived, worked, prayed and fought over the centuries. Since the publication of John B. Hilling’s The Historic Architecture of Wales in 1976, there has been no other attempt at addressing the architecture of Wales as a whole, and this revised publication meets a long-felt need for a general survey of architecture in Wales. It covers two thousand years of architectural history, reflecting the nation’s life from Roman times to the present century – less a revision of the original than a complete re-writing, taking into account recent research and recent buildings. The book is illustrated with 268 colour and black-and-white photographs, drawings, plans and maps.

Book Houses of the Welsh Countryside

Download or read book Houses of the Welsh Countryside written by Peter Smith and published by Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales. This book was released on 1988 with total page 933 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When this book was first published in 1975 it was at once enthusiastically received by scholars and the general public alike and recognized as a classic of its genre. It represented a notable publication of the early fruits of the Commission's work on the side of its responsibility for the National Monuments Record for Wales. During the years which have since intervened, much fresh information has come to light concerning Welsh houses - not least because of the intense interest awakened by the original publication. This new knowledge has, as far as possible, been incorporated in the new and revised edition, which contains approximately onequarter more material than the first. Although it has not been possible to alter the original text, a number of additional maps and photographs have been included and a new dust-jacket has been designed. The Commissioners would wish warmly to congratulate their Secretary, Mr. Peter Smith, those of his colleagues who were associated with him, and H.M.S.O. on the excellence of this volume. It marks another outstanding landmark in the study of vernacular architecture, not only in Wales but also in the British Isles, and a major achievement on the part of its author. Although this second edition of Houses of the Welsh Countryside retains in their entirety the text, the illustrations, and the layout of the volume first published in 1975, it also includes a substantial amount of new information which has come to light since that date. Some of this new material takes the form of additional figures inserted where appropriate into the existing illustrative pages. Similarly a small number of additional colour plates showing typical houses in characteristic settings has been tipped into the text. There are also additions to the original map lists. It has not been possible for reasons of cost to bring the maps themselves up to date, but as the newly-discovered sites nearly always reinforce the distribution patterns first indicated, this omission is not crucial. The numbers of new discoveries can vary from a mere handful on one list to several hundred on another. All other new material is introduced as part of an additional SECTION IV at the back of the volume. This section comprises: Corrigenda Covering sites which were inadequately or incorrectly described in the first volume, involving in one case a complete reappraisal of the original reference. Addenda I Describing and illustrating a small number of newly surveyed houses of especial interest which could not easily be fitted into the illustrations in the main text. Addenda II Analysing the incidence of date-inscriptions as evidence for building activity. Addenda III Listing and mapping a number of features of domestic architecture not previously so noted. Addenda IV Listing and mapping various features of ecclesiastical architecture which also occur in houses and which therefore have a bearing on the evolution of domestic architecture.

Book Biographies and Autobiographies in Modern Italy a Festschrift for John Woodhouse

Download or read book Biographies and Autobiographies in Modern Italy a Festschrift for John Woodhouse written by Martin McLaughlin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-12-02 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Critical interest in biography and autobiography has never been higher. However, while life-writing flourishes in the UK, in Italy it is a less prominent genre. The twelve essays collected here are written against this backdrop, and address issues in biographical and autobiographical writing in Italy from the later nineteenth century to the present, with a particular emphasis on the interplay between individual lives and life-writing and the wider social and political history of Italy. The majority of essays focus on well-known writers (D'Annunzio, Svevo, Bontempelli, Montale, Levi, Calvino, Eco and Fallaci), and their varying anxieties about autobiographical writing in their work. This picture is rounded out by a series of studies of similar themes in lesser known figures: the critic Enrico Nencioni, the Welsh-Italian painter Llewellyn Lloyd and Italian writers and journalists covering the Spanish Civil War. The contributors, all specialists in their fields, are Antonella Braida, Charles Burdett, Jane Everson, John Gatt Rutter, Robert Gordon, Gwyn Griffith, Peter Hainsworth, Martin McLaughlin, Gianni Oliva, Giuliana Pieri, and Jon Usher. The volume is dedicated to John Woodhouse, on his seventieth birthday, and concludes with a bibliography of his writings."

Book Discovering a Welsh Landscape

Download or read book Discovering a Welsh Landscape written by Ian Brown and published by Windgather Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the far north-east corner of Wales, a line of hills looks east across the plain into England, guarding the way towards Snowdonia. Designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the Clwydian Range has a very rich archaeology. This beautifully illustrated book tells the story of this landscape: a history of Wales in microcosm. At the northern end of the Welsh March, the Clwydian Range is a crossroads, a place where outside influences have always been profound. The book consequently places the Range's archaeology in the context of the broader themes in Welsh and British history. We learn of: the mammoth bones left in the area's caves by Paleaeolithic hunters; the great chain of Iron Age hillforts that crown the Range; the bronze brooches in Romano-British burials; from the medieval period, motte and bailey castles and Gothic churches; the watercourses, mines and engine houses of the industrial era; the Range's links with the great poet Gerard Manley Hopkins. Throughout, the photographs capture the spirit of Hopkins' original 'landscape plotted and pieced'. The Clwydian Range is perhaps typical of Britain, where places have a great depth of historical connections. This book shows how much there is to be discovered. Ian Brown, formerly County Heritage Officer for Clwyd, managed the Clwydian Range Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Mick Sharp and Jean Williamson are two of Britain's leading archaeological and landscape photographers.

Book excerpt: This is the first thorough, authoritative study of the place-names of the entire pre-1974 Flintshire, scholarly in substance, readable in presentation, with its selection of names based on the OS Landranger 1:50,000 map. The entry for each of the 800 names presents a grid reference, documentary and oral evidence with dates, derivation and meaning, and a discussion of the significance of the name in terms of history, language, landscape and industrial associations. Additionally, comparisons are drawn with similar names in other parts of Wales and the UK, and the later linguistic development of names is charted in light of the particular influences of a bilingual society.
