Book excerpt: La superación del reduccionismo científico pretende ser un diagnóstico lúcido del pensamiento contemporáneo, que presenta, entre otras patologías, una fuerte indigestión de cientificismo, ampliamente difundido de mil modos en la opinión pública, mediante revistas de divulgación científica, libros de texto, exposiciones, etc. Por cientificismo debemos entender la teoría en virtud de la cual los únicos conocimientos válidos son los que proporcionan las ciencias –preferentemente, las ciencias experimentales-, y la investigación científica basta para satisfacer las necesidades de la inteligencia humana y para resolver todos nuestros problemas realmente significativos. El cientificismo constituye, pues, una absolutización de la ciencia, una restricción injustificada del saber humano, que no es exclusivamente de carácter científico; es, en otras palabras, la ideología de quienes piensan que la ciencia lo es todo o, al menos, el medio principal de que disponemos para saberlo todo. La obra comienza con un examen de las formas de saber humano: ordinaria, científica, filosófica y religiosa; enseguida, centra su análisis en la historia del cientificismo, desde sus albores con la filosofía atomista griega hasta nuestros días. En la época contemporánea se exploran con detenimiento los tipos de cientificismo más relevantes: el fisicalismo, el biologismo, el antropologismo, el socialismo científico, el psicologismo freudiano y el materialismo cibernético. La indagación se extiende también al pensamiento de los principales exponentes del cientificismo contemporáneo: Monod, Sagan, Rostand, Morin, Lorenz, Dawkins, Davies, Atkins y Hawking. Finalmente, se acomete el estudio del estado actual del cientificismo, así como su necesaria superación, una superación no sólo útil a la ciencia, sino también indispensable para alcanzar una imagen del mundo y del hombre objetiva, ponderada y real.
