Others have had excellent pictorial illustrations but such meager commentary as to leave the student unpiloted amid the rich flow Of Cicero's eloquence. TO let the author, after a complete but moderate introduction, interpret himself through suggestions Of his real meaning, given in adequate English, has seemed to the editors Of this edition the proper principle upon which to make the text-book Of a Latin author for American schools. Cicero the man, and not Cicero the historical figure surrounded by people with little or no interest for us, has been our chief concern. The aim in making this edition has been helpfulness toward an appreciation Of Cicero and Of such Of his literary work as we have been able to include in this school text-book. The selec tions from the Letters were made with special reference to their fitness for use as exercises in translation at sight they will at the same time give a glimpse of Cicero in his family life and in his relations with those to whom he was frank and outspoken. The variations from the text of Baiter and Kayser consist mainly in different punctuation, in writing the genitive singular of -z o-stems in -2 instead of 47, and in the treatment of bracketed passages, which in some cases have been received into the text, while others were removed altogether. For the sake of uniformity long vowels are marked as they appear in the Elementary Latin Dictionary of Charlton T. Lewis, except in cases which would require too much sacrifice of conviction. This book is intended to be 'very practical throughout, and in its preparation the sole aim has been to meet the needs of the preparatory students who would be likely to use it. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Selected Letters of Cicero IN editing these selections from Cicero's correspondence, I have attempted to meet the needs of the Freshman who, when he enters college, is suffering from indifferent teaching. This statement is made without the slightest desire to cast aspersions upon the excellent work in Latin done in many schools. I am firmly convinced, however, from my own experience and from the testimony of other men, that Latin is poorly taught in the majority of our Southern high schools and preparatory schools. No one who has had charge of Freshman classes needs argument from a fellow-sufferer to prove that this is true. The notes in this volume are, there fore, quite full. The introduction has'been made very brief, because of the well-nigh universal habit among students of skipping that portion of a textbook altogether. Subjects usually treated at length in introductions are here set forth at proper points in the commentary. The selections which appear in this book were made with a view to throwing light upon Cicero's habits and character, and upon the life in which he moved. Although this basis of choice coincides with that adopted by practically all recent editors, yet there are several letters presented here which are not found in the editions in general use at the present time.
