Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cicely in Ceylon Desmond Cleeve braced himself against the small hurricane which swept the decks of the P. and O. steamship "Scudan," and thanked his stars that at least sea-sickness was not one of his vices. The great rollers, born amidst the untrammelled expanse of the Atlantic ocean, swept down upon the vessel's quarter with a force of apparent annihilation. Now and again, shivering as if with ague, the wretched ship thrust her nose into an abysmal trough, and the screw, rising heavenwards, raced impotently. With a well-calculated dash across the deck Desmond flung himself at the door of the smoking room. In another moment, the door, caught by the wind, closed behind him amidst a shower of spindrift that half-swamped the cabin. "Bit thick outside, isn't it?" Desmond, shaking the moisture from his face, glanced across at the speaker. The latter, the only other occupant of the cabin, was wedged in between a cushioned corner and a marble-topped table, his long legs affording an efficient prop for preventing him from being thrown across the deck. It was a cheery voice, and the owner of it, brown-eyed, with dark brown hair and small moustache, bore out its character in every line of his smiling face. "By Jove, yes!" answered Desmond "It took me all my time to get here from the saloon. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Three Fires: A Story of Ceylon Hamilton tried dazedly to remember how it bad all began. Half an hour ago he had been taking his tea in solitary comfort in the one shady comer of the Galle Face lawn, watching the long white rollers break on the palm-fringed beach and idly debating whether to return to his plantation to-morrow or to give himself a day or two more by the sea, beyond whose sapphire immensities lay England. He said England now, not home. Home, for him, had come to mean the wild green heart of Ceylon. Stridently into his musings had come the talk and laughter of a party of American tourists. He had watched them with amused wonder; travelers of this type never climbed the jungle-bordered roads that led to his hills. Then, as they were obviously disappointed by their failure to find a place on the lawn sheltered from the tropic sun, it had seemed inevitable that he should give up his patch of shade and retire to the verandah. There his memory blurred. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book India and Ceylon Classic Reprint

Download or read book India and Ceylon Classic Reprint written by Ernst Haeckel and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from India and Ceylon "Really going to India?" questioned my friends in Jena; and, Really going to India, I repeated, I know not how often after I, at the close of the past winter, fully impressed with the melancholy dreariness of our North-German February, decided to spend the next winter in the tropical sunshine of that wonder-island Ceylon. In this age of travel, when no part of our globe is spared by the adventuresome tourist, a voyage to India is no great feat. We speed across the most distant seas in the comfortable and luxurious steamships of the present, in less time, and with less ceremony and fewer accidents, than attended the dreaded journey to Italy a hundred years ago. Even a "tour around the world in eighty days" is become a familiar thought; and many inexperienced cosmopolitans, who possess the funds necessary for such a tour, imagine that it gives them a better, a more comprehensive "education," than they could obtain by ten years' hard study in our best schools. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Visit to Ceylon I then inspected, repaired, and completed the various nstruments and apparatus for examining and collecting specimens which always formed part of my paraphernalia in my voyages along the coast, and I added considerably to their number. I took advantage of the summer months to learn and practice various arts which I deemed might prove especially useful and desirable on this journey - such as oil painting, photography, the use of a gun, of nets and traps, soldering metal, etc. As the climate seemed to render it advisable that I should not start before the middle of Octo ber, I spent the autumn holidays in Jena, busied in making preparations and in packing my very considerable appa ratus. Although the special object of my journey was to be restricted within the limits of my own departments of study, more particularly animal and plant life, there were many other questions in natural history to which I might be able to render subsidiary aid, and which I must be more or less ready to investigate. Book In Old Ceylon Classic Reprint

Download or read book In Old Ceylon Classic Reprint written by Reginald Farrer and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-15 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from In Old Ceylon Then the procession of jewels continues. Sapphire has not yet shown you all it can do. From little brown canvas bags, such as those in which we Westerners some times carry mere contemptible sovereigns when we are so fortunate as to possess them, comes bounding forth, upon beds of snow-white paper, the moony refulgence of the star-stones. Of a soft dove - grey is the typical star sapphire, of a tender, clouded, milky blue, of pearly tones like a mountain mist, or softly cerulean as the bluebell; and, grey or white or blue, always there nestles at its heart a floating six-rayed star of pure light, that shifts and wavers across the surface of the stone as you move it to and fro. In the Old days, the cutters who roped the Kings of Lanka in Chains Of ruby and cat's-eye had the art Of so cutting these star-stones that ripple after ripple of radiance followed hard upon each other's heels as the jewel turned this way and that. But the secret lies long buried in the heart of dead Ceylon, and nowadays we must be contented with the hexagonal prism across that lovely clouded surface. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Bungalow and the Tent, or a Visit to Ceylon Friend, be not tedious, said the Rajah Of Travancore to a Christian missionary, in the sixteenth century, remember life is short. I have endeavoured to pay due attention to this admirable advice; and if what I have written be wearisome, the Offence can scarcely be visited on the quantity. It has been laid to the charge of many authors, that they deprive themselves of sleep, in order to procure it for their readers. I plead a conscientious not guilty to this allegation.
