Book excerpt: Cibi - meaning 'a little one' - is a book on home-style Japanese cooking inspired by the eponymous Melbourne café and design space created by Meg and Zenta Tanaka. It contains 80 seasonally relevant recipes across vegetables, fish and seafood, meat, grains and noodles, and sweets, plus small features on elements of Japanese cooking and food culture, accompanied by beautiful photography and illustrations. The recipes, many designed for sharing, strongly reflect Meg and Zenta's ethos – a fresh approach to simplicity using quality produce. CIBI incorporates elements of Japanese design culture and glimpses of their young family's worlds in Collingwood, Tokyo, and Meg's birthplace, Okayama, alongside snapshots (in words and pictures) of the CIBI-feel: an enjoyment of food, community and sharing.

Book Black Power Encyclopedia 2 volumes

Download or read book Black Power Encyclopedia 2 volumes written by Akinyele Umoja and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2018-07-11 with total page 945 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An invaluable resource that documents the Black Power Movement by its cultural representation and promotion of self-determination and self-defense, and showcases the movement's influence on Black communities in America from 1965 to the mid-1970s. Unlike the Civil Rights Movement's emphasis on the rhetoric and practice of nonviolence and social and political goal of integration, Black Power was defined by the promotion of Black self-determination, Black consciousness, independent Black politics, and the practice of armed self-defense. Black Power changed communities, curriculums, and culture in the United States and served as an inspiration for social justice internationally. This unique two-volume set provides readers with an understanding of Black Power's important role in the turbulence, social change, and politics of the 1960s and 1970s in America and how the concepts of the movement continue to influence contemporary Black politics, culture, and identity. Cross-disciplinary and broad in its approach, Black Power Encyclopedia: From "Black Is Beautiful" to Urban Uprisings explores the emergence and evolution of the Black Power Movement in the United States some 50 years ago. The entries examine the key players, organizations and institutions, trends, and events of the period, enabling readers to better understand the ways in which African Americans broke through racial barriers, developed a positive identity, and began to feel united through racial pride and the formation of important social change organizations. The encyclopedia also covers the important impact of the more militant segments of the movement, such as Malcolm X and the Nation of Islam and the Black Panthers.

Book Ferment for Good Ancient Food for the Modern Gut

Download or read book Ferment for Good Ancient Food for the Modern Gut written by Sharon Flynn and published by Hardie Grant. This book was released on 2017-05-09 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ferment for Good is a guide to discovering the joys of fermentation in its myriad variations - framed through the eyes of Sharon Flynn, who was hooked early in her 20s and has since made it her life's work to learn and share all there is to know about this most ancient of practices. Ferment for Good includes a how-to guide to the basics (why do it; what you need; and what you'll get), alongside sections on wild fermented vegetables (including sauerkraut, kimchi, brine); drinks (including water kefir, kombucha and apple cider); milk and dairy (including yogurt and milk kefir), grains (simple sourdough, dosa and injera); and Japanese traditions (including miso & tamari, soy sauce, sake kasu and pickled ginger). Sharon then shares recipes and advice for incorporating these foods into every meal. These include nine variations on kraut and how to eat it (mixed through mashed potatoes, tossed through scrambled eggs, accompanying pork chops or on the side of a soft fish taco). And let's not forget about kimchi. The book contains six variations, plus a handful of recipes that incorporate it (from kimchi gyoza to Korean pancakes to kimchi fried rice). Ferment for Good is a beautiful, personal collection to introduce you into the fermentation world - complete with photographs of selected dishes and Manga-style cartoons that channel the author's connection to Japan and offer graphic, often entertaining short tales of her adventures in fermenting.

Download or read book Race Schools Hope written by Lisa M. Stulberg and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How can school choice be a form of both giving up on public education and a form of hope and faith in American schooling? This book helps us to make sense of why and how African Americans participate in and lead school choice reforms. The author argues that regardless of the success or failure of these reforms, they represent an important political phenomenon in American schooling and in African American history and politics. The first section of the book focuses on African American school choice in the post-Brown period, examining how these reforms became a response to desegregation politics and policies. The second section focuses on the author's experience as a co-founder of a charter school in Oakland, California at a time when Oakland's public schools were found to be severely under-serving African-American students.

Book De Animalibus Michael Scot s Arabic Latin Translation Volume 3 Books XV XIX Generation of Animals

Download or read book De Animalibus Michael Scot s Arabic Latin Translation Volume 3 Books XV XIX Generation of Animals written by Aafke M.I. van Oppenraay and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-09-06 with total page 534 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aristotle's De Animalibus was an important source of zoological knowledge both for the ancient Greeks and for the medieval Arabs and Europeans. The work was twice translated into Latin, once directly from the Greek by William of Moerbeke and once, by way of the intermediary of an existing Arabic translation, by Michael Scot. Of these, Scot's translation is the oldest. The De Animalibus is composed of three sections: 'History of Animals' (10 books), 'Parts of Animals' (4 books) and 'Generation of Animals' (5 books). The present volume contains the first critical edition of Scot's translation of the last section. Editions of his translations of the two preceding sections are in preparation. The volume includes very complete Latin-Arabic and Arabic-Latin word indexes and, as a supplement, the first complete word index to the original Greek text of 'Generation of Animals'. The volume for the first time makes available to the scholarly world a version of Aristotle's 'Generation of Animals' that has long been one of the main sources of knowledge in Europe on the subject. Being a faithful translation of a translation produced by a Syriac-speaking Christian, the text also contributes to our knowledge of Middle Arabic.
