Book The Pathology of the Endocrine Pancreas in Diabetes

Download or read book The Pathology of the Endocrine Pancreas in Diabetes written by Pierre J. Lefebvre and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 550 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Diabetes mellitus represents one of the most frequent and serious clinical syn dromes in contemporary medicine. Since the end of the nineteenth century, the endocrine pancreas has been implicated in the pathogenesis of this disease. Several pathologists of the twentieth century detected various lesions and mor phologic alterations in the pancreatic islets of diabetic patients, but the patho physiologic basis of their findings remained long obscure. The systematic mi croscopic work of WILLY GEPTS clarified the views and related the variety in histopathology to differences in origin, duration and clinical expression of the disease. Over the past two decades, the concept of a multifactorial origin of diabetes has become widely accepted. Various agents and mechanisms have been identified which can lead to a quantitative or qualitative deficit in pancre atic B-cells. The purpose of this book is to bring an update on the many path ways which may induce an absolute or relative insufficiency in insulin release and hence a diabetic state. Rather than bringing a complete account on all re search relevant to the understanding of the pathology of the diabetic pancreas, the authors of the various chapters of this volume have focussed on selected processes which can impair B-cell function, survival or regeneration.

Book Diabetes Mellitus Pathophysiology and Therapy

Download or read book Diabetes Mellitus Pathophysiology and Therapy written by Werner Creutzfeldt and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 399 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains the reviews delivered at the Bayer Centenary Symposium held in Edinburg in May 1988. Experts in the field reported on recent developments in the pathophysiology and therapy of diabetes mellitus. Thus an up-to-date overview of diabetes mellitus research presented to a small group of specialists is now available to a broader community of endocrinologists, physicians and internists.

Book Immunopathology of Insulin

Download or read book Immunopathology of Insulin written by K. Federlin and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-05-20 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Monographs on Endocrinology, Volume 6: Immunopathology of Insulin provides information pertinent to the fundamental aspects of immunopathology of insulin. This book covers a variety of topics, including cell mediated immunity, biological effects of insulin, insulin allergy, insulin immunology, and humoral insulin antibodies. Organized into six chapters, this volume begins with an overview of the causal relationship between delayed hypersensitivity and antibody production. This text then explains the molecular localization of the most important immunologic components of the insulin molecule. Other chapters consider the clinical observation of allergic reactions of insulin antibodies in the tissue and the in vitro method of standard serology. This book discusses as well methods used for demonstration of insulin antibodies in humans and experimental animals. The final chapter deals with the investigations concerned with the various kinds of immune reactions, which follow the injection of insulin. This book is a valuable resource for endocrinologists, immunologists, and diabetologists.

Book Control of Pancreatic Beta Cell Function and Plasticity in Health and Diabetes

Download or read book Control of Pancreatic Beta Cell Function and Plasticity in Health and Diabetes written by David J. Hill and published by Bentham Science Publishers. This book was released on 2016-12-02 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plasticity in insulin-producing cells (β-cells) of the pancreas is a major contributor to metabolic control. Targeted regeneration of pancreatic β-cells for the reversal of diabetes (by optimizing β-cells mass and proliferation to meet metabolic requirements and counter autoimmune response) is still a theoretical intervention. This monograph reviews the biology, ontogeny, capabilities, and present practical limitations of β-cell plasticity. Relevant biochemical pathways are described with the inclusion of information about how they change with aging, during pregnancy, and with diet. Readers will learn the following key aspects about β-cell plasticity: -current knowledge of pancreatic β-cells development, and how β-cell mass and proliferation change throughout the human lifespan -the mechanisms responsible for β-cell plasticity, based on animal models and clinical studies revealing environmental, epigenetic, endocrine and paracrine regulators -the therapeutic potential of resident stem cells within the pancreas / bone marrow and β-cell progenitors This monograph is essential reading for researchers interested in updated knowledge about the molecular and cellular biology of β-cells in the quest to find a reliable therapy for diabetes.
