Book Churchill s Grandmama

Download or read book Churchill s Grandmama written by Margaret Elizabeth Forster and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2011-08-26 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sir Winston Churchill’s paternal grandmother and the mother of Randolph Churchill, the 7th Duchess of Marlborough, has been a minor figure in many works, yet hers is a fascinating story. Frances Anne Emily Vane-Tempest-Stewart’s family background, as well as her own life, is steeped in great historical names and occasions, from being the eldest daughter of Wellington’s second-in-command in the Napoleonic Wars to being a lifelong personal friend of Queen Victoria. Frances’ arrival at Blenheim Palace in 1843 as the bride of John Winston, 7th Marquess of Blandford, resulted in the great ancestral seat’s regeneration, and from there she gave loyal support not only to her husband and her younger son, Randolph, but also to her famous grandson, Winston Churchill, shaping his character, ambitions and later achievements. Alongside the influence she had over her family, her own crowning achievement was the part she played in averting the effects of the Irish potato famine of 1879, which threatened to repeat the extensive loss of life of the 1840s famine. Churchill’s Grandmama is an absorbing, remarkable biography that restores a most gracious woman to her proper place at Blenheim.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sir Winston Churchill's paternal grandmother and the mother of Randolph Churchill, the 7th Duchess of Marlborough, has been a slight figure in many other people's biographies yet her own story as a member of a remarkable family has never been fully told, until now. Frances Anne Emily Vane-Tempest-Stewart's family background, as well as her own life, is steeped in great historical names and occasions. She was the eldest daughter of the 3rd Marquess and Marchioness of Londonderry, two well-known, glamorous individuals: her father was a military hero, second in command to Wellington in the Napoleonic wars, and her mother one of the wealthiest women in England. Her godfather was the Duke of Wellington, her uncle Lord Castlereagh, British Foreign Secretary, Queen Victoria was a lifelong personal friend and contemporary and her political circle included both Disraeli and Gladstone. Tsar Alexander I of Russia was a mysterious, romantic figure among the shadows of her childhood. Frances' arrival at Blenheim Palace in 1843 as the bride of John Winston, 7th Marquess of Blandford resulted in the great ancestral seat's regeneration as a family home, as a social and political focus for the life of the nation and for the neighbourhood of Woodstock in Oxfordshire. Frances the Duchess gave loyal support not only to her husband but also her younger son, Randolph, in his political career, and became a stable and abiding influence on her famous grandson, Winston Churchill, shaping his character, ambitions and later achievements. Her own crowning achievement, fully and dramatically told in this book, is her humanity, leadership and skill, through her Famine Relief Committtee, in averting the effects of the Irish potato famine of 1879, which threatened to repeat the wholesale loss of life of the famine of the 1840s, when she was Vicereine of Ireland. Margaret Elizabeth Forster has found new, original material and unpublished family photographs from the Marlborough personal archives to recount this absorbing, remarkable biography and to restore a most gracious woman to her proper place at Blenheim.

Book UTOPIA S SUICIDE

Download or read book UTOPIA S SUICIDE written by John Paul and published by Author House. This book was released on 2013 with total page 477 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Having one foot in North America and one in Europe, the author inevitably, compares these two continents, their surroundings, their people, and their modus vivendi. The interpretation of happenings on these continents as they relate to one life's adventure is the scope of this work, which is, before everything else, a collage of personal biography, illuminated by flashes of the remarkable historical moments preceding the emigration. There are, moreover, interpretations of impressions colored with romantic, enchanting mysticism, and alternatively, subjective impressions of immigrants who came to America to find a better life and expected, to some extent, to find a promised land on a platter. In either case, impressions are based on predispositions of what immigrants from the old country envisioned American to be like. However, gratia is not a prerequisite; it does not exist in the meaning of emi, nor immi gratia. Is this memoir an unprejudiced evaluation and objective notation of experiences as they were, or a biased overflow of emotions, ridicule and sarcasm, or delight and adornment? What is the difference between autobiography, memoir, and diary, versus a fictitious, rather historical novel in the first place? A degree of deviation from factual reality? A conglomerate relatively dry when transferred onto paper, this cacophony, without regard to categorization, may enlighten the mind of one American, or one potential immigrant, by informing or reforming the picture of the mirage of a once-magical "New World" or the romanticism of the "Old One."

Book excerpt: Faced with the sale of the century-old family summer house on Cape Cod where he had spent forty-two summers, George Howe Colt recounts returning for one last stay with his wife and children in this stunning memoir that was a National Book Award Finalist and a New York Times Notable Book of the Year. This poignant tribute to the eleven-bedroom jumble of gables, bays, and dormers that watched over weddings, divorces, deaths, anniversaries, birthdays, breakdowns, and love affairs for five generations interweaves Colt’s final visit with memories of a lifetime of summers. Run-down yet romantic, The Big House stands not only as a cherished reminder of summer’s ephemeral pleasures but also as a powerful symbol of a vanishing way of life.

Book Not Your Grandmother s Book of Revelation

Download or read book Not Your Grandmother s Book of Revelation written by Charyl Craddock and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2020-10-21 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unlike most other commentaries on the Book of Revelation, Not Your Grandmother's Book of Revelation presents Scripture to dispel the many misinterpretations that have been perpetuated for the last one hundred years. Many of those misinterpretations have a foundation from the book Dispensational Truths by Baptist Pastor and Biblical scholar Charles Larkin, which was published in 1918. In addition to the influence of Mr. Larkin's book, many misinterpretations result from the false belief that the Book of Revelation is written in chronological order and that all of the events shown to John will occur during the final seven years, Daniel's seventieth week. In this book, Scripture is presented that positively establishes that the Revelation of Christ as recorded by John is written in the order that the events were shown to John, not chronologically; that the events of the vision, "the events that shall be hereafter" (Revelation 1:19), began occurring during the second and third century after the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ; that the first three and a half years after the signing of the peace agreement between Israel and "many" will be a peaceful time during which Israel will build the third Temple; the final three and a half years, the Great Tribulation, is the pouring out of the wrath of Satan, not the wrath of God; and that Jesus told the apostles that the First Resurrection, the "Rapture" does not occur until "immediately after the tribulation" (Matthew 24:29). It will be shown that America is in the Book of Revelation. A detailed description of the Antichrist, False Prophet, one-world government "Beast," and "mark of the Beast" are presented, as is a synopsis of all chapters and the prophecies of Daniel. Finally, a timeline of the events of the vision is presented.

Book Austen and Bront s Complete Novels of Jane Austen Charlotte Bront Emily Bront Anne Bront

Download or read book Austen and Bront s Complete Novels of Jane Austen Charlotte Bront Emily Bront Anne Bront written by Charlotte Brontë and published by Good Press. This book was released on 2023-11-27 with total page 4463 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Austen and Brontës: Complete Novels of Jane Austen, Charlotte Brontë, Emily Brontë & Anne Brontë is a monumental anthology that unites the full literary oeuvres of four of the most important and influential authors in English literature. This collection traverses the diverse landscapes of 19th-century British life, weaving together themes of love, independence, social status, and the clash between personal desires and societal expectations. The anthology is unique in its amalgamation of Austen's keen wit and social commentary with the passionate intensity and psychological depth of the Brontë sisters, offering readers a rich variety of styles and perspectives. Long celebrated standouts include 'Pride and Prejudice' and 'Jane Eyre', among others, representing the pinnacle of the era's literary achievements. The contributing authors, though contemporaneous, represent divergent experiences, backgrounds, and worldviews within the same historical period. Their works collectively reflect the nuanced evolution of the novel as a form and offer critical insights into the changing roles of women, both within the literary world and in society at large. The Brontës' raw emotional power and gothic elements contrast with Austen's brilliant satire of Georgian society, yet each author's work is a testament to the enduring power of narrative to challenge and reflect the complexities of human nature. This anthology is an indispensable resource for students, scholars, and anyone interested in 19th-century English literature. By juxtaposing the works of Austen and the Brontë sisters, it provides a unique opportunity to engage with the era's preeminent voices in a comprehensive dialogue. Readers will not only gain a deeper appreciation for the individual talents of each author but will also witness the collective evolution of the novel as a reflective and transformative medium. This collection is a treasure trove of literary mastery, inviting readers to explore the depths of human emotion, societal constraints, and the timeless pursuit of personal fulfillment.
