Book excerpt: This prize-winning account of the pre-Reformation church recreates lay people’s experience of religion, showing that late-medieval Catholicism was neither decadent nor decayed, but a strong and vigorous tradition. For this edition, Duffy has written a new introduction reflecting on recent developments in our understanding of the period. “A mighty and momentous book: a book to be read and re-read, pondered and revered; a subtle, profound book written with passion and eloquence, and with masterly control.”—J. J. Scarisbrick, The Tablet “Revisionist history at its most imaginative and exciting. . . . [An] astonishing and magnificent piece of work.”—Edward T. Oakes, Commonweal “A magnificent scholarly achievement, a compelling read, and not a page too long to defend a thesis which will provoke passionate debate.”—Patricia Morison, Financial Times “Deeply imaginative, movingly written, and splendidly illustrated.”—Maurice Keen, New York Review of Books Winner of the Longman-History Today Book of the Year Award

Organised by county, each church is described - often with delightful asides - and given a star-rating from one to five. Jenkins contends that these churches house a gallery of vernacular art without equal in the world. Here, he brings that museum to public attention.

Book The Angel Roofs of East Anglia

Download or read book The Angel Roofs of East Anglia written by Michael Rimmer and published by Lutterworth Press. This book was released on 2015-08-27 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shortlisted for the East Anglian Book Awards 2016! It has been estimated that over 90% of England's figurative medieval art was obliterated in the image destruction of the Reformation. Medieval angel roofs, timber structures with spectacular and ornate carvings of angels, with a peculiar preponderance in East Anglia, were simply too difficult for Reformation iconoclasts to reach. Angel roof carvings comprise the largest surviving body of major English medieval wood sculpture. Though they areboth masterpieces of sculpture and engineering, angel roofs have been almost completely neglected by academics and art historians, because they are inaccessible, fixed and challenging to photograph. 'The Angel Roofs of East Anglia' is the first detailed historical and photographic study of the region's many medieval angel roofs. It shows the artistry and architecture of these inaccessible and little-studied medieval artworks in more detail and clarity than ever before, and explains how they were made, by whom, and why. Michael Rimmer redresses the scholarly neglect and brings the beauty, craftsmanship and history of these astonishing medieval creations to the reader. The book also offers a fascinating new answer to the question of why angel roofs are so overwhelmingly an East Anglian phenomenon, but relatively rare elsewhere in the country.

Book Norfolk and Suffolk Churches The Domesday Record

Download or read book Norfolk and Suffolk Churches The Domesday Record written by David Butcher and published by Poppyland Publishing. This book was released on 2019-03-22 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Norfolk and Suffolk have far more places of Christian worship than any other English county with the exception of Lincolnshire. Their pre-conquest origin and location can often be revealed by careful examination of William I's great survey. However, when confronted with the mass of data presented, the Domesday text can appear ambiguous or contradictory to the historian. In this book the author has painstakingly arranged the data into tables to provide a unique research tool for those interested in the existence of a place of worship during the Anglo-Saxon period. It is meant as a handbook to assist investigation into the location and distribution of the churches recorded within the document. In addition to presenting data for each church, the author further encourages the reader to engage in his/her own research into a locality by providing a model study of one particular area of Suffolk: the half-hundreds of Lothingland and Mutford. He also investigates the valuation of church land-endowments, parishes with round-tower buildings and the presence of freewomen as land-holders, examining their potential role as founders of churches or as encouragers of other people to establish them. He proposes that, in contrast with Norfolk, Suffolk had certain high-born women who were influential in the communities they controlled and a greater number of lower-status ones who were nevertheless a significant social feature.

Book excerpt: A fascinating guide to decoding the secret language of the churches of England through the medieval carved markings and personal etchings found on our church walls from archaeologist Matthew Champion. 'Rare, lovely glimmers of everyday life in the Middle Ages.' -- The Sunday Times 'A fascinating and enjoyable read' -- ***** Reader review 'Superb' -- ***** Reader review 'Riveting' -- ***** Reader review 'Compelling, moving and fascinating' -- ***** Reader review ***************************************************************************************************** Our churches are full of hidden messages from years gone by and for centuries these carved writings and artworks have lain largely unnoticed. Having launched a nationwide survey to gather the best examples, archaeologist Matthew Champion shines a spotlight on a forgotten world of ships, prayers for good fortune, satirical cartoons, charms, curses, windmills, word puzzles, architectural plans and heraldic designs. Here are strange medieval beasts, knights battling unseen dragons, ships sailing across lime-washed oceans and demons who stalk the walls. Latin prayers for the dead jostle with medieval curses, builders' accounts and slanderous comments concerning a long-dead archdeacon. Strange and complex geometric designs, created to ward off the 'evil eye' and thwart the works of the devil, share church pillars with the heraldic shields of England's medieval nobility. Giving a voice to the secret graffiti artists of Medieval times, this engaging, enthralling and - at times - eye-opening book, with a glossary of key terms and a county-by-county directory of key churches, will put this often overlooked period in a whole new light.
