Book Churches and Convents of Goa

Download or read book Churches and Convents of Goa written by Annabel Lopez and published by India Book House. This book was released on 2002 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Built during the 16th and 17th centuries AD, the churches and convents of Goa -- the former capital of the Portuguese in India -- illustrate the evangelization of India. The book traces the spread of Christianity in Goa, the historic development of the churches and convents, particularly the Se Cathedral Complex, and the influence of European building styles on the indigenous architecture. Se Cathedral, one of the largest churches in Old Goa, is built in the Portuguese-Gothic style. With a Tuscan interior and a Corinthian exterior, its main altar is dedicated to St. Catherine of Alexandria; paintings on either side depict scenes from her life. An interesting example of religious architecture is the Church of St. Francis of Assisi, adorned with gilded and carved woodwork, murals portraying scenes from the life of St. Francis, and a floor made substantially of carved gravestones. Briefly touching upon the building traditions and technology, the book also talks about other monuments and churches in Goa.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: India’s phytodiversity is one of the most significant in the world. India is one of the twelve mega-biodiversity centers in the world and also an important center of origin of agrobiodiversity. It is therefore, very important to study, document and conserve the plant wealth of India and also of the world before its possible extinction. There are convincing scientific, economic and sociological reasons for giving priority to the conservation of the major centers of plant diversity throughout the world. The strategies to conserve the biodiversity include establishment of protected area network and corridors with emphasis on appropriate levels of management, reduction of anthropogenic pressure on natural populations by cultivating them elsewhere, programmes of augmentation, reintroduction and introduction of target taxa, restoration of degraded habitats, etc. The conservation strategies can be either, in-situ conservation of genetic resources within their ecosystem and natural habitat or ex-situ conservation of components of genetic material of biological diversity outside their natural habitat. The choice of conservation strategy depends upon the nature of the material to be conserved, i.e., the life cycle and mode of reproduction, size of individual population and ecological status. Ex-situ techniques include the establishment of botanical and zoological gardens, banks of pollen, seed tissue culture, DNA, etc. Establishment of forest reserves, national parks, protected areas and on farm conservation of valuable plant varieties is being promoted to facilitate their in-situ conservation.

Book excerpt: The World Heritage Sites list created by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) aims to promote awareness and preservation of tangible and intangible cultural heritage around the world, sites that are considered to have outstanding value for all humanity, regardless of location. To date, UNESCO has named thirty-eight such sites in India, all of which are presented in this volume, together with commentary by architects and conservationists and stunning photographs by Rohit Chawla. The cultural sites selected in India are a rich repository of the country's long, layered history, bearing witness to the creativity and influence of multiple communities, crafts, and religions. The sites covered in this volume range across the length and breadth of India--from the earliest periods of rock art, Buddhist caves, and Hindu temples, Sultanate and Mughal forts, palaces, tombs and memorials, medieval Hindu and Islamic cities, step-wells, and observatories to Portuguese churches and Victorian and Art Deco ensembles to, finally, twentieth-century industrial and modern heritage sites. The natural and mixed-use sites include national parks of exceptional natural beauty and sites of long interaction between people and the landscape. India is a beautiful and lavishly illustrated publication for every traveler and lover of Indian culture.
