Book excerpt: Thomas Case sets forth Leviticus 26:25, “And I will bring a sword upon you, that shall avenge the quarrel of my covenant.” He explains how it comes to pass that covenant violation is a matter of high quarrel between God and his people. He shows “covenant” in its nature, matter, form, parties and end. He clearly explains that such a violation (to break covenant with God or to lie in taking an oath or vow) is seen in three ways: contemptuous refusing, graceless profaning, and treacherous deceiving. The reasons he gives of such a quarrel is the contempt of God’s holy ordinances and of holiness itself; gross ignorance under the glorious light of the Gospel; unfruitfulness under the means of grace; ingratitude for mercies; incorrigibleness under judgments; profaning the Lord’s Day; all sorts of uncleanness, luxury, and excess in eating or drinking; vanity, pride, envy, contention, divisions, oppression, fraud, and violence. Not even one professing Christian person can say that he is wholly free from such. In this he remarks that the wishy washy nature of people in the church bring God’s judgments against them whether they see it or not. Swear and un-swear, do and undo. Protest for Christ today and accommodate Antichrist tomorrow. As if breach of our covenant dissolved our engagements. And because we have broken once with God, we were never bound afterward to keep our word, and our oaths. He shows that we may not tempt God in this. He that swears he knows not what will observe he cares not how. Ignorant making of an oath will end in unconscionable breaking of the same.

In reality, infant baptism ought to be the last five minutes of a five day conversation of the covenant of God. That is the substance of this work, and the manner in which Brinsley treats God’s covenant and infant inclusion in the Covenant of Grace. It would be spiritually beneficial for the church to consider such a statement in the full orbed account of God’s covenant from Genesis to Revelation. From 2 Tim. 4:2, “Preach the word; be instant in season, and out of season,” he shows that if God has ordained the office of the preacher to herald his message to people "in season and out of season," then, in fact, there must also be people "to do the hearing." This work, then, not only applies to the preacher’s charge, but the people’s duty to hear earnestly and diligently what the preacher has said. He shows that the minister’s charge is a duty to preach the Gospel of Christ, which is in turn preaching Christ: to preach the Word. The preacher is the herald of God, whose office is discharged by speaking this Word to all people, in all cases, in the name of Christ, boldly, faithfully and plainly. In discharging their duty, preachers are to be “instant in season and out of season”, or, earnest and diligent in its performance at all times. By way of contrast but compliment, the hearer of the word should always strive to hear, also, diligently and earnestly. They ought never to be offended at hearing the word preached in its simplicity, and they must excite themselves to this duty entertaining the word of God with gladness. Within the course of this narrative, while Joseph is in his house, Potiphar’s wife comes to him many times to lure him off to sin in one of the most bold and forthright temptations to be recorded anywhere in the Bible. She had longing, wandering eyes and comes to tempt him, assaulting him, “day by day,” constantly, and audaciously. Joseph’s reaction to this wicked assault is an instant refusal to the temptation. “How then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?” (Gen. 39:9). What biblical directives can be found in this amazing statement of holiness and godliness? From this one text McMahon meticulously explains how Joseph’s victory over temptation against Potiphar’s wife can be used by the believer today for their own victory to the glory of Jesus Christ. Christians need to be prepared to deal with temptation in a manner in which they will be victorious in the power of Christ’s Spirit. This book faithfully explains and applies Genesis 39:9 demonstrating Joseph’s godly resolve and the unreasonableness of sinning against God. Here you will find what steps you can take, following devout Joseph, to keep yourself from falling into sin through the craftiness of temptation, that you may bring the most glory to Jesus Christ in your walk before God.

Psalm 96 delivers to them the directives they need in order to praise God rightly. It is, in and of itself, a condensed theology of praise for the Church of Jesus Christ. God has called his people to praise him. Psalm 96 shows the church what should fill their theology of praise so that they praise God in holiness and truth. This is only possible through Jesus Christ and his work on the cross for them, as the one and only Messiah; the Messiah David was looking forward to and the Messiah the church looks back to who has already come. This Psalm is a call to all people to praise God correctly, and then demonstrates God’s government and judgment over the whole earth in response to those who praise him rightly, and those who do not. God, as the glorious Savior of his covenant people, has redeemed a people of praise; those whose theology of praise extends from the word of God into their mind, then to their regenerated heart, to their mouth and finally seen in their actions. Such a people will be a community of those who offer testimony and witness to the great acts and wonders of God’s being and grace to a fallen world; from being a witness to their children, to their next door neighbor, their cities and country, to all those across the world. While such work is going on, this covenant community will also be watchful as a community of believers knowing that Christ may choose to return and judge the world in righteousness at any time, where Christ will finally usher them into an eternity of praise; a place where creation and the church will praise Christ forever, the Lamb who was slain before the foundation of the world.

Book excerpt: Brinsley’s work in this volume is directed to encouraging Christians to act like biblical Christians in their relationship to one another as joint heirs in Christ, and to one another in the confines of their relationship as joint members of the church body. This is something sorely neglected as a theological topic in today’s contemporary church. Am I my brother’s keeper? The answer to this is a resounding, “YES.” Brinsley’s principle text is drawn from Romans 12:4-5, “For as we have many members in one body…” Here we find the joint-members of the church in one body, and that one body recognized under the head of Jesus Christ. The reader will see that Brinsley is eminently clear in three points, 1. That there is a specific, biblical unity of the body [that it is one body]; 2. That there is a plurality of members [we have many members in one body]; 3. That there is a diversity of offices [and all members do not have the same office]. By the same token, Brinsley will also be exceptionally practical in his application of these three ideas, demonstrating what Christians are to do in the church, and what they are not to do in the church as it respects other members. Would it not be glorious to find a church in which there is no backbiting, malice, envy, murmuring, disdain, etc., for one another, and instead is found the highest levels of inward and outward respect, oneness of mind and love for one another? Some may say that such an ideal is only found in heaven, but that does not excuse the church from its method of sanctification now, here on earth, and its striving power to gain such ideals under the headship of Christ. May it be that the church takes Brinsley’s exposition to heart, and further heals the breaches of the church both inwardly in particular churches, and outwardly among neighboring ones, that the church may grow unified within the bonds of peace.
