Book The Wesleys and the Anglican Mission to Georgia 1735 1738

Download or read book The Wesleys and the Anglican Mission to Georgia 1735 1738 written by John Thomas Scott and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2020-10-23 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Wesleys and the Anglican Mission to Georgia, 1735-1738 considers the fascinating early history of a small group of men commissioned by trustees in England to spread Protestantism both to new settlers and indigenous people living in Georgia. Four minister-missionaries arrived in 1736, but after only two years these men detached themselves from the colonial enterprise, and the Mission effectively ended in 1738. Tracing the rise and fall of this endeavor, Scott’s study focuses on key figures in the history of the Mission including the layman, Charles Delamotte, and the ministers, John and Charles Wesley, Benjamin Ingham, and George Whitefield. In Scott’s innovative historical approach, neglected archival sources generate a detailed narrative account that reveals how these men’s personal experiences and personal networks had a significant impact on the inner-workings and trajectory of the Mission. The original group of missionaries who traveled to Georgia was composed of men already bound together by family relations, friendships, and shared lines of mentorship. Once in the colony, the missionaries’ prospects altered as they developed close ties with other missionaries (including a group of Moravians) and other settlers (John Wesley returned to England after his romantic relationship with Sophy Hopkey soured). Structures of imperialism, class, and race underlying colonial ideology informed the Anglican Mission in the era of trustee Georgia. The Wesleys and the Anglican Mission to Georgia enriches this historical picture by illuminating how a different set of intricacies, rooted in personal dynamics, was also integral to the events of this period. In Scott’s study, the history of the expansive eighteenth-century Atlantic world emerges as a riveting account of life unfolding on a local and individual level.

Download or read book Religion and Profit written by Katherine Carté Engel and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2013-03-26 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Moravians, a Protestant sect founded in 1727 by Count Nikolaus Ludwig von Zinzendorf and based in Germany, were key players in the rise of international evangelicalism. In 1741, after planting communities on the frontiers of empires throughout the Atlantic world, they settled the communitarian enclave of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, in order to spread the Gospel to thousands of nearby colonists and Native Americans. In time, the Moravians became some of early America's most successful missionaries. Such vast projects demanded vast sums. Bethlehem's Moravians supported their work through financial savvy and an efficient brand of communalism. Moravian commercial networks, stretching from the Pennsylvania backcountry to Europe's financial capitals, also facilitated their efforts. Missionary outreach and commerce went hand in hand for this group, making it impossible to understand the Moravians' religious work without appreciating their sophisticated economic practices as well. Of course, making money in a manner that be fitted a Christian organization required considerable effort, but it was a balancing act that Moravian leaders embraced with vigor. Religion and Profit traces the Moravians' evolving mission projects, their strategies for supporting those missions, and their gradual integration into the society of eighteenth-century North America. Katherine Carté Engel demonstrates the complex influence Moravian religious life had on the group's economic practices, and argues that the imperial conflict between Euro-Americans and Native Americans, and not the growth of capitalism or a process of secularization, ultimately reconfigured the circumstances of missionary work for the Moravians, altering their religious lives and economic practices.

Book The Way of Salvation

  • Author : Paul A. Rainbow
  • Publisher : Wipf and Stock Publishers

  • ISBN : 1620326434
  • Pages : 353 pages

Download or read book The Way of Salvation written by Paul A. Rainbow and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2012-12-01 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Martin Luther invented the Reformation slogan sola fide--by faith alone--which Philipp Melanchthon and John Calvin brandished and defended. Most Protestants since their time have swallowed it whole. But is evangelical obedience--the good works that follow faith and are produced by grace--excluded from the basis for justification or otherwise? Asserting that "there is no more serious question bearing upon the destiny of human beings than how sinners can be justified before a Holy God," Paul Rainbow examines current and traditional treatments of faith, works, and justification, marshals a biblical case majoring on the New Testament teaching of Paul and James, and offers a series of systematic, historical, and pastoral reflections.
