Book Staging Ground

Download or read book Staging Ground written by Leslie Stainton and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2014-06-15 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this poignant and personal history of one of America’s oldest theaters, Leslie Stainton captures the story not just of an extraordinary building but of a nation’s tumultuous struggle to invent itself. Built in 1852 and in use ever since, the Fulton Theatre in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, is uniquely ghosted. Its foundations were once the walls of a colonial jail that in 1763 witnessed the massacre of the last surviving Conestoga Indians. Those same walls later served to incarcerate fugitive slaves. Staging Ground explores these tragic events and their enduring resonance in a building that later became a town hall, theater, and movie house—the site of minstrel shows, productions of Uncle Tom’s Cabin, oratory by the likes of Thaddeus Stevens and Mark Twain, performances by Buffalo Bill and his troupe of “Wild Indians,” Hollywood Westerns, and twenty-first-century musicals. Interweaving past and present, private anecdote and public record, Stainton unfolds the story of this emblematic space, where for more than 250 years Americans scripted and rescripted their history. Staging Ground sheds light on issues that continue to form us as a people: the evolution of American culture and faith, the immigrant experience, the growth of cities, the emergence of women in art and society, the spread of advertising, the flowering of transportation and technology, and the abiding paradox of a nation founded on the principle of equality for “all men,” yet engaged in the slave trade and in the systematic oppression of the American Indian.

Book excerpt: " ... The first of whom we are reasonably certain is in direct lineage with the Keffers of the Conewago Valley is "Matheis Kaffer" who arrived on September 27, 1740 from Rotterdam via Dover on the Ship Lydia, James Allen, Commander. He went almost immediately to Goshenhoppen, the name then applied to that part of the Perkiomen Valley straddling the present boundary of Berks and Montgomery Counties [Pennsylvania]."--Foreward. Almost certainly of German origin, Mathias Keffer was born about 1706 or 1707." ... It is impossible to state with any certainty whether he was married on arrival and whether any of his children were born before Sept. 1740. ... Furthermore there can be found no trace of a record of the death and burial of either Mathias or his wife A.M. and likewise their marriage."--Page 65." ... They probably died before 1766."--Page 67. Book Al Sieber

  • Author : Dan L. Thrapp

Download or read book Al Sieber written by Dan L. Thrapp and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2012-11-28 with total page 467 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: General George Crook planned and organized the principal Apache campaign in Arizona, and General Nelson Miles took credit for its successful conclusion on the 1800s, but the men who really won it were rugged frontiersmen such as Al Sieber, the renowned Chief of Scouts. Crook relied on Sieber to lead Apache scouts against renegade Apaches, who were adept at hiding and raiding from within their native terrain. In this carefully researched biography, Dan L. Thrapp gives extensive evidence for Sieber’s expertise, noting that the expeditions he accompanied were highly successful whereas those from which he was absent met with few triumphs. Perhaps the greatest tribute to his abilities was paid by a San Carlos Apache who, no matter how miserable life might become, because, he said, Sieber would find him even if he left no tracks.

Book FAMILIE ALLWEIN

Download or read book FAMILIE ALLWEIN written by Duane F. Alwin and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 725 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is part of a series of books about the history of the Allwein family in America, a family descended from an 18th century German immigrant Johannes (Hans) Jacob Allwein and his wife Catharina. This book builds upon the first volume of this series, Familie Allwein – An Early History, which dealt with the Allwein family’s emigration from Germany to America and their settlement in colonial Pennsylvania. This new two-book set represents the second volume of this series, titled Familie Allwein – Journeys in Time and Place, covering Allwein descendants living east of the Allegheny Mountains over the 70-year period from about 1870 through 1940. Part I of this second volume focuses on those families that settled in southeastern Pennsylvania, particularly in Lebanon , Philadelphia and Berks Counties. Part II focuses on those families living in Dauphin, Lancaster, Adams, York and Blair Counties in south central Pennsylvania. Additional future volumes will cover Allwein descendants who moved to western Pennsylvania and those who migrated farther west. Not only is the present volume an update on the families covered in volume 1 of Familie Allwein, it goes beyond the early land, tax and estate records, to include information from marriage and birth records, military records, census records, death records, county atlases and local histories. As in the first volume of this series, the author’s careful documentation of all sources and attention to detail make it possible to reproduce his findings and re-examine his conclusions.
