Book excerpt: Churches have split and denominations have formed over the issue of church government. While many Christians can explain their church's form of rule or defend it because of its "tried and true" traditions, few people understand their church's administrative customs from a biblical perspective. Who Runs the Church? explores questions such as: What model for governing the church does the Bible provide, and is such a model given for practical or spiritual reasons? Is there room for different methods within Christianity? Or is there a right way of "doing church"? And, finally, how (and by whom) should the church be governed? Four predominant approaches to church government are presented by respected proponents: Episcopalianism - represented by Peter Toon Presbyterianism - represented by L. Roy Taylor Single-Elder Congregationalism - represented by Paige Patterson Plural-Elder Congregationalism - represented by Samuel E. Waldron As in other Counterpoints books, each view is followed by critiques from the other contributors, and its advocate then responds.

This book was released on 2014-09-03 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Just as the government structure of Russia differs from that of the United States, and both differ from that of Great Britain, so it is with church government. Yet, as the institution governed by God's written word, the church must find and defend its governing structures using that word--the Bible. In this book, Dr. Simon Goncharenko argues that it is, in fact, possible to identify a specific preferred model of church polity within the Bible and to model our current church structure after Scriptural precedent.

Book The Main Points of Church Government and Discipline

Download or read book The Main Points of Church Government and Discipline written by Christopher Love and published by Puritan Publications. This book was released on 2020-02-11 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this work, Love sets down the plain teaching of Scripture demonstrating Presbyterial Government. It is a simple, but profitable, short, but sound teaching on the subject. Though the work is shorter than most works on the subject, there is a great deal of matter in a few words. It is a brief but yet biblically solid work so that not only the weak may be instructed, but the strong also established in the truth. There has always been a debate surrounding church government, concerning the question, “What is the best oversight of the church that could be had by Christ’s people while the church militant is established in the world?” Mr. Love will demonstrate, in catechistical form, that Presbyterial Government is of Divine Right, and is the best means for governing the people of God under Christ as a church body. The government of the church by Presbyters or Elders, who have the rule (Heb. 13:7, 17, 1 Tim. 5:17), and the keys of Christ’s church (Isa. 22:22, Rev. 1:18, 3:7), as well as power to remit and retain sin (John 20:23), are those who feed and govern the flock (1 Peter 5:2, Acts 20:17, 28), and are over people in the Lord (1 Thess. 5:12). Such men, as Love masterfully demonstrates, are Guides, Leaders, Bishops, Governors, and Pastors. And it is by this Divine Right that Christ rules his church in a Presbyterian form of church government. His section on the support of the church, minister and tithing is worth the cost of the volume alone. This work is not a scan or facsimile, has been carefully transcribed by hand being made easy to read in modern English, and has an active table of contents for electronic versions.

Book The Framework of the Church

Download or read book The Framework of the Church written by W. D. Killen and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Framework of the Church: A Treatise on Church Government The present volume treats of a subject which has been a bone of controversy for ages. It is very far from the design of the author to revive, much less to aggravate, the bitterness which the discussion has awakened; but, as the scriptural constitution of the Church has occupied much of his attention for at least half a century, he is desirous to communicate to others his matured convictions on the questions in dispute. He cannot expect that all his readers will adopt his conclusions; and yet he trusts that a calm review of the whole debate will tend to remove prejudices and misunderstandings, to diffuse light, and eventually to open the way for the cultivation of kindlier feelings and closer fellowship among the children of God. Amidst the din of theological warfare there may be found in good men, all over the Church, a yearning desire for unanimity and peace; and should this publication do nothing more than help to remove some of the causes by which real Christians are now separated, it will not have been written in vain.
