Book excerpt: Church is a place where believers are supposed to assemble to praise and worship our God. From the pressures of life to the disappointments of the week, the church is where we receive our healing, deliverance, direction, and peace. Not only do we worship, but also we fellowship with our brothers and sisters in what should be a loving, nurturing, and caring atmosphere. Sadly, a significant part of my experience has been quite the opposite. The danger of moving prematurely from under our covering made us a target for Satan to do what he does best: steal, kill, and destroy. Journey with me through the valley of the shadow of death, as this book depicts the betrayal, hurt, and humiliation that my family suffered at the hands of God's anointed. This is a story of survival through the trenches of the church world. In spite of everything we have gone through, God is still faithful to his word concerning family and me. He said that he would never leave us nor forsake us, and he has not failed at that yet. The intensity of this story will bring about laughter, tears, frustration, thought provocation, and even repentance. Be blessed, encouraged, and strengthened by my transparency.

The election of Pope Francis—coinciding with the fiftieth anniversary of the council—has inspired a fresh consideration of its teaching in such diverse areas as ecumenism, inculturation, missiology, and ministry. The chapters in this volume have their origin in a special symposium that called together over forty of the leading Catholic scholars from throughout North America in order to discuss the future of theological reflection on the church. The nine essays in this volume guided that conversation and offer an entry into some of the most pressing issues in ecclesiology today.

Book excerpt: As news reports of the horrific December 2004 tsunami in Asia reached the rest of the world, commentators were quick to seize upon the disaster as proof of either God s power or God s nonexistence, asking over and over, How could a good and loving God if such exists allow such suffering? In The Doors of the Sea David Bentley Hart speaks at once to those skeptical of Christian faith and to those who use their Christian faith to rationalize senseless human suffering. He calls both to recognize in the worst catastrophes not the providential will of God but rather the ongoing struggle between the rebellious powers that enslave the world and the God who loves it wholly.

Book Becoming a Welcoming Church

Download or read book Becoming a Welcoming Church written by Thom S. Rainer and published by B&H Publishing Group. This book was released on 2018-03-01 with total page 79 pages. Rainer's consultations, church members perceive their church to be friendly. But as he surveyed guests, he found that the guests typically saw church members as unfriendly. The perception chasm existed because the members were indeed friendly . . . to one another. The guests felt like they crashed a private party. In a format that is suitable for church members to read individually or study together, Rainer guides readers toward a practical framework for making a difference for those who visit their church. Churches may use Becoming a Welcoming Church to assess and audit where they are on a spectrum between welcoming and wanting. Additionally, churches can use the companion book We Want You Here to send guests home with a compelling vision for what pastors want every guest to know when they visit.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explores the practice of eating together as Christian worship The gospel story is filled with meals. It opens in a garden and ends in a feast. Records of the early church suggest that believers met for worship primarily through eating meals. Over time, though, churches have lost focus on the centrality of food— and with it a powerful tool for unifying Christ’s diverse body. But today a new movement is under way, bringing Christians of every denomination, age, race, and sexual orientation together around dinner tables. Men and women nervous about stepping through church doors are finding God in new ways as they eat together. Kendall Vanderslice shares stories of churches worshiping around the table, introducing readers to the rising contemporary dinner-church movement. We Will Feast provides vision and inspiration to readers longing to experience community in a real, physical way.
