Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tracts of the American Tract Society, Vol. 10: General Series Having labored a few months in the ministry at Rindge, I called on Dr. Jewett, in the spring of 1822, to ask his consent that his eldest daughter might assist as a teacher in the Sabbath-school. He frankly stated his objections to Sabbath-schools; but, after a candid reconsideration of them, granted my request, and all his children of proper age, were also permitted to attend. This brought the family more directly into contact with Christian influence, and at length this daughter and four other children, became hopefully pious, and united with the church. He was tenderly attached to his family; and so far as his children exhibited the fruits of the Spirit, their influence upon their father was favorable to evangelical religion. He once said to me, in the hearing of some of them who were anxious for their salvation, Say what you think proper to them, for though I do not believe your doctrine, if any of my family think it will add to their happiness to join your church, I am willing they should do it. A Tract can be given away, and God's blessing asked upon it, in a moment.' Aside from the. Influence of those institutions which involve no expense at all, in no way can so much probable good be effected at so little expense, as by the dis tribution of Tracts. A Tract which contains fifteen pages, can be published for asingle cent And when we recollect how long a single Tract may be preserved, by how many individuals and families it may be read, and when read by them, to how many others it may be lent, it is difficult to conceive of a way in which more good can be accomplished by a very small amount of means. As an auxiliary to other means of doing good, the distribution of Tracts also holds a distinguished, place. In how many sick chambers, in how many meetings of anxious inquiry, in how many circles of wealth and prosperity, of fashion, folly, and vice, may these faithful witnesses be left to testify what other wise never would be told. The language of every Mis sionary Society, either domestic or foreign, is, A Mission ary without a supply of Tracts is unprovided for his work; the press isthe grand medium of communication in all parts of the missionary world. A missionary at Sumatra writes - I am fully of Opinion that, among all nations not accustomed to books, the distribution of small Tracts, writ ten in an easy style, or of single Gospels, is much more likely to do good than that Of-larger works. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tracts of the American Tract Society, Vol. 12: General Series Sabbaths, and seasons of grace, and offers of mercy, would soon cease for ever. The next Lord's day, as the lady was returning from the Sabbath-school, she observed, to her great sorrow, the shop open, and the sticks of peppermint, and the glasses of candy, and trays of gingerbread set forth in as tempting display as ever and two of her own little scholars were indulging themselves with a look, though they assured her they had no intention of buying. She told them that it was wrong to go in the way of evil; and that even to look upon and wish for things that it is not right for us to have, is commit ting sin in our hearts. She desired them to look at the 3d chapter of Genesis and the 6th verse, and the 7th chapter of Joshua and the 20th and 215t verses, and there see what sad mischief. Came from looking on forbidden things; and she promised in the afternoon to talk over with them these portions of Scripture. Then bidding them hasten home, she opened the shop-door, and at the sound of the little bell forth came the mistress of the shop, expecting to. Meet a customer. The woman's countenance' expressed shame - that of her visitor, sorrow. I am truly grieved, Mrs. C to find your shop still open. I had hoped, from our conversation the other day, that you would have made up your mind to remember the Sabbath-day to keep it holy. Why, yes, ma'am, I did mean to do so. I am really very sorry to keep Open shop but you know we must live and we take more on Sundays than on any other day in the week. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tracts of the American Tract Society, Vol. 9: General Series Lord, what wilt thou have me to do This was no doubt the incipient breathing of a heart submitting to Christ; the first lifting up of the soul to God for instruction in duty, accompanied with a determination to obey the command, be it what it might, prescribed in the answer. This is the spirit of the Christian. It commences in his unreserved submission to Christ, marks his career of self-denying effort through life, and attains perfection in heaven. But there is, especially, one branch of Christian duty, which, in this state of spiritual action and conflict, must ever excite a deep and absorbing interest; it is one for which this same converted Saul was greatly distinguished: consecration TO christ, IN labors for the salvation OF A world. This book was released on 2015-07-17 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Publications of the American, Vol. 1: Doctrinal Tract Society What God has required his creatures to do, he has not arbitrarily required, but required for good and sufficient reasons. These reasons are found in the doctrines which he has revealed. The duty of loving God is founded upon the doctrine that he is supremely good. If he was not a good Being, it could not be the duty of creatures to love him. And if he was not the best of all beings, it could not be their duty to love him supremely. The duty of repentance is founded upon the doctrine of human depravity. If mankind are not sinners, they have nothing to repent of. And the question respecting the extent of their sinfulness or depravity, must obviously settle the question respecting the extent to which repent ance is a duty. The duty of. Faith in Christ depends upon the doctrine that he is the true Messiah. Unless he is as he claims to be the Son of God, unless he actually made his soul an offering for sin, and unless he is able to save to the uttermost all that come unto God by him, it cannot be the duty of perishing sinners to trust in him as their Saviour. It is to em ploy our Opportunity of exciting attention from the mere fact of our being strangers and to make it a means of im pressing their minds with the truths necessary to their sal vation.
