Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Imperial Gridiron examines the competing versions of manhood at the Carlisle Indian Industrial School between 1879 and 1918. Students often arrived at Carlisle already engrained with Indigenous ideals of masculinity. On many occasions these ideals would come into conflict with the models of manhood created by the school's original superintendent, Richard Henry Pratt. Pratt believed that Native Americans required the "embrace of civilization," and he emphasized the qualities of self-control, Christian ethics, and retaliatory masculinity. He encouraged sportsmanship and fair play over victory. Pratt's successors, however, adopted a different approach, and victory was enshrined as the main objective of Carlisle sports. As major stars like Jim Thorpe and Lewis Tewanima came to the fore, this change in approach created a conflict over manhood within the school: should the competitive athletic model be promoted, or should Carlisle focus on the more self-controlled, Christian ideal as promoted by the school's Young Men's Christian Association? The answer came from the 1914 congressional investigation of Carlisle. After this grueling investigation, Carlisle's model of manhood starkly reverted to the form of the Pratt years, and by the time the school closed in 1918, the school's standards of masculinity had come full circle.

They cover pivotal years for both the nation and the College. In 1784, the war with England had just ended. Nassau Hall was still in a shambles following its bombardment, and the College was in financial distress. It gradually regained financial and academic strength, and the Class of 1794 graduated in the year of the death of President John Witherspoon, one of the most important early American educators. The introductory essay by John Murrin, editor of the series since 1981, explores the postwar context of the College. The two volumes contain biographies of 354 men who attended with the classes of 1784 through 1794 and two other students whose presence at the College in earlier years has only now been demonstrated. During these years Princeton accounted for about an eighth of all A.B. degrees granted in the United States. It was the young republic's most "national" college, although it had nearly lost its New England constituency and was instead beginning to draw nearly 40 percent of its students from the South. Book excerpt: The Heilman families of Lebanon County, Pennsylvania. John Peter Heilman (1712-1777) was born in or near Heilbronn in the Province of Württemburg. He died in Lebanon Twp., Lancaster Co., Pennsylvania. He was the first Heilman to arrive in America. He came in 1732 landing at Philadelphia, Pa. He married in 1739 Salome Fry (b. ca. 1719), daughter of Andreas Fry (or Frey) and Catharina Barbara Ritter. They had thirteen children all born in Lebanon Twp. John Adam (Hans Adam) Heilman (1715-1770) was born in Zuzenhausen, in the Province of Baden, the eldest son of John Jacob and Maria Katharina Heilman. He married Maria Catharina Stager (1709-1787), daughter of John Barnhard Stager. John Adam came to America in 1738. Both died in Lebanon Twp., Lancaster Co. (now Lebanon Co.), Pa. William B. Heilman (1840-1901) was born in East Hanover Twp., Lebanon co., Pa., and died at Annville, Lebanon Co., Pa. He married 1861 at Annville, Pa. Elizabeth Leslie (1843-1905).
