Book excerpt: In a church culture becoming increasingly focused on "cultural relevance," how can leaders guide their church in a way that returns to the Bible and honors God? Throughout his years of ministry, this was a question Jason Shepperd continued to ask. Many churches around him were focusing their resources internally instead of making disciples and meeting needs, and Jason knew God wanted more for the Church and for his people. In Church Project, Jason shares how God led them to structure the church and return to biblical church planting. He explains how their church has stayed committed to their core principles and helped their congregation to live out these values. Jason's desire is to share the lessons God has taught him over the years, and to guide church leaders seeking to return their churches to God's true plan for his people.

Book excerpt: With more than 450,000 copies in print, When Helping Hurts is a paradigm-forming contemporary classic on the subject of poverty alleviation. Poverty is much more than simply a lack of material resources, and it takes much more than donations and handouts to solve it. When Helping Hurts shows how some alleviation efforts, failing to consider the complexities of poverty, have actually (and unintentionally) done more harm than good. But it looks ahead. It encourages us to see the dignity in everyone, to empower the materially poor, and to know that we are all uniquely needy—and that God in the gospel is reconciling all things to himself. Focusing on both North American and Majority World contexts, When Helping Hurts provides proven strategies for effective poverty alleviation, catalyzing the idea that sustainable change comes not from the outside in, but from the inside out.

By following these principles, you will see your dreams come true and find fulfillment in your vocation. By ignoring them, despite the use of well-honed methods, you will fail to see your ideals realized. Rafael's book fills in a missing element in the formation of leaders, missionaries and Christian social entrepreneurs. How many projects have failed for lack of vision, solid foundations and proper tools for fundraising? This book has come at the right time for Christian entrepreneurs—to eliminate headaches and ease their biggest worries—furnishing all that is needed to make the dream of transformation come to life and grow to fulfill its mission. In this book, Rafael brings together many years of experience having traveled throughout the country as a fundraising consultant for Christian social projects, leaving in his wake a legacy for social entrepreneurs.

Book Christianity and Genocide in Rwanda

Download or read book Christianity and Genocide in Rwanda written by Timothy Longman and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2009-09-07 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although Rwanda is among the most Christian countries in Africa, in the 1994 genocide, church buildings became the primary killing grounds. To explain why so many Christians participated in the violence, this book looks at the history of Christian engagement in Rwanda and then turns to a rich body of original national- and local-level research to argue that Rwanda's churches have consistently allied themselves with the state and played ethnic politics. Comparing two local Presbyterian parishes in Kibuye before the genocide demonstrates that progressive forces were seeking to democratize the churches. Just as Hutu politicians used the genocide of Tutsi to assert political power and crush democratic reform, church leaders supported the genocide to secure their own power. The fact that Christianity inspired some Rwandans to oppose the genocide demonstrates that opposition by the churches was possible and might have hindered the violence.
