"Just give me five minutes more, Larry, and I promise you we're going to leave this place, and start on our cruise down to the big Gulf. I've got a couple of nuts to put on again, and then you'll hear the little motor begin to hum." The last speaker was bending over the engine of a fair-sized motor boat, which had a stationary roof, and adjustable curtains that in time of need could be made to enclose the entire vessel. This modern craft was tied up against the bank of one of those narrow but swift streams that, having their source in southern Georgia or Alabama, find their way to the Gulf of Mexico, after passing through many miles of Florida cypress swamps that are next to unknown territory to the outside world. Phil Lancing was the son of a well-to-do Northern physician, who had some time previously come into possession of a very large tract of territory in Northern Florida. Considerable of this property was in vast swamps; and here squatters had settled many years back, cutting the trees at their pleasure, and making vast quantities of cypress shingles, which were floated down the river to markets along the gulf.

Book excerpt: Gloriana; or, The Revolution of 1900 (1890) is a novel by Lady Florence Dixie. A member of the National Union of Women’s Suffrage Societies, Dixie believed in the emancipation of women through radical cultural and political change. Gloriana; or, The Revolution of 1900, a feminist utopian novel, is the story of a revolutionary hero who defies gender norms and fights for liberation by any means necessary. Gloriana pleads woman’s cause, pleads for her freedom, for the just acknowledgement of her rights. It pleads that her equal humanity with man shall be recognized, and therefor that her claim to share what he has arrogated to himself, shall be considered. Gloriana pleads that in woman’s degradation man shall no longer be debased, that in her elevation he shall be upraised and ennobled.” Following this stirring introduction, Lady Florence Dixie tells the story of Gloriana de Lara, a woman who decides to put an end to patriarchy. Disguising herself as a man named Hector d’Estrange, she attends both Eton and Oxford and is elected a Member of Parliament. Meanwhile, she leads the revolutionary Woman’s Volunteer Company on a campaign of violence against repressive authority. When a plot to reveal her identity is discovered, she is forced to go into hiding or else sacrifice years of painstaking work toward the liberation of women throughout the world. With a beautifully designed cover and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of Lady Florence Dixie’s Gloriana; or, The Revolution of 1900 is a classic of British literature reimagined for modern readers.

Book excerpt: Master storyteller and bestselling author Steven Pressfield returns with a stunning, chillingly plausible near-future thriller about the rise of a privately financed and global military industrial complex. The year is 2032. The third Iran-Iraq war is over; the 11/11 dirty bomb attack on the port of Long Beach, California is receding into memory; Saudi Arabia has recently quelled a coup; Russians and Turks are clashing in the Caspian Basin; Iranian armored units, supported by the satellite and drone power of their Chinese allies, have emerged from their enclaves in Tehran and are sweeping south attempting to recapture the resource rich territory stolen from them, in their view, by Lukoil, BP, and ExxonMobil and their privately-funded armies. Everywhere, military force is for hire. Oil companies, multi-national corporations and banks employ powerful, cutting-edge mercenary armies to control global chaos and protect their riches. Even nation states enlist mercenary forces to suppress internal insurrections, hunt terrorists, and do the black bag jobs necessary to maintain the new New World Order. Force Insertion is the world's merc monopoly. Its leader is the disgraced former United States Marine General James Salter, stripped of his command by the president for nuclear saber-rattling with the Chinese and banished to the Far East. A grandmaster military and political strategist, Salter plans to take vengeance on those responsible for his exile and then come home...as Commander in Chief. The only man who can stop him is Gilbert "Gent" Gentilhomme, Salter's most loyal foot soldier, who launches a desperate mission to take out his mentor and save the United States from self destruction. Infused with a staggering breadth of research in military tactics and steeped in the timeless themes of the honor and valor of men at war that distinguish all of Pressfield’s fiction, The Profession is that rare novel that informs and challenges the reader almost as much as it entertains.
