Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Agnes MartinÕs (1912Ð2004) celebrated grid paintings are widely acknowledged as a touchstone of postwar American art and have influenced many contemporary artists. MartinÕs formative years, however, have been largely overlooked. In this revelatory study of MartinÕs early artistic production, Christina Bryan Rosenberger demonstrates that the rapidly evolving creative processes and pictorial solutions Martin developed between 1940 and 1967 define all her subsequent art. Beginning with MartinÕs initiation into artistic language at the University of New Mexico and concluding with the reception of her grid paintings in New York in the early 1960s, Rosenberger offers vivid descriptions of the networks of art, artists, and information that moved between New Mexico and the creative centers of New York and California in the postwar period. She also documents MartinÕs exchanges with artists including Ellsworth Kelly, Barnett Newman, Georgia OÕKeeffe, Ad Reinhardt, and Mark Rothko, among others. Rosenberger uses original analysis of MartinÕs art, as well as a rich array of archival materials, to situate MartinÕs art within the context of a dynamic historical moment. With a lively, innovative approach informed by art history and conservation, this fluidly written book makes a substantial contribution to the history of postwar American art.

  • Author : Nancy Princenthal
  • Publisher : Thames & Hudson

  • ISBN : 0500772886

Download or read book Agnes Martin Her Life and Art written by Nancy Princenthal and published by Thames & Hudson. This book was released on 2015-06-16 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first biography of visionary artist Agnes Martin, one of the most original and influential painters of the postwar period Over the course of a career that spanned fifty years, Agnes Martin’s austere, serene work anticipated and helped to define Minimalism, even as she battled psychological crises and carved out a solitary existence in the American Southwest. Martin identified with the Abstract Expressionists but her commitment to linear geometry caused her to be associated in turn with Minimalist, feminist, and even outsider artists. She moved through some of the liveliest art communities of her time while maintaining a legendary reserve. “I paint with my back to the world,” she says both at the beginning and at the conclusion of a documentary filmed when she was in her late eighties. When she died at ninety-two, in Taos, New Mexico, it is said she had not read a newspaper in half a century. No substantial critical monograph exists on this acclaimed artist—the recipient of two career retrospectives as well as the National Medal of the Arts—who was championed by critics as diverse in their approaches as Lucy Lippard, Lawrence Alloway, and Rosalind Krauss. Furthermore, no attempt has been made to describe her extraordinary life. The whole engrossing story, told here for the first time, Agnes Martin is essential reading for anyone interested in abstract art or the history of women artists in America.

Book The Governor Nelson A Rockefeller Empire State Plaza Art Collection and Plaza Memorials

Download or read book The Governor Nelson A Rockefeller Empire State Plaza Art Collection and Plaza Memorials written by Dennis R. Anderson and published by Rizzoli International Publications. This book was released on 2002 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nelson A. Rockefeller, one of the greatest art patrons of the recent past and as yet unheralded for the extraordinary legacy he left behind, had an inspired vision for New York State's capital. While governor of the state from 1959-1973 he undertook what was at the time the most ambitious public art project ever conceived-one which set the standard for public funding in the arts. The result of this ambitious project was an unrivaled collection of modern and contemporary art, which boasts nearly 100 works of art, all of which are in public view in Albany. The collection includes work by Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, Helen Frankenthaler, Donald Judd, Ellsworth Kelly, David Smith, Robert Motherwell and many other important artists. The beautifully illustrated volume, which features six 4-page gatefolds, includes expert essays by major scholars and curators including John Elderfield, Robert Storr and Pepe Karmel, all of The Museum of Modern Art. Glenn Lowry, current director of The Museum of Modern Art contributes a substantive essay on the collection and Rockefeller's extraordinary efforts to form it. The second essay, written by the collection's curator, offers the first indepth look at the politics surrounding the formation of the collection.

Book excerpt: In art, eras rarely begin with new decades, and New York Cool proves that the years between 1955 and 1965 were at least as vital a phase as "the 60s." Taking a fresh look at a moment that has too long been viewed as a parenthesis between Abstract Expressionism and Minimalism/Pop art, this book documents the diversity of art made in New York during those years. James Lee Byars, Alex Katz, Yayoi Kusama, Agnes Martin, Kenneth Noland, Robert Rauschenberg and Frank Stella are presented here, alongside mentors such as Louise Bourgeois, Elaine and Willem de Kooning, Philip Guston, Robert Motherwell and poet Frank O'Hara.

By integrating artwork with the architecture of new buildings and incorporating an enlightened approach to acquisitions, this forerunner of corporate collections became a model for other companies worldwide. Today it is one of the oldest and largest corporate art collections in the world, focusing on modern and contemporary painting, sculpture, works on paper and photography, which continue to be the portfolio's strength. This core collection is enhanced by a diverse and eclectic range of objects from every country in which JPMorgan Chase does business, offering a unique perspective on the firm's culture.
