Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Laura Joh Rowland draws on the tradition of the classic film Rashomon to bring us a masterful tale of intrigue and treachery, in Red Chrysanthemum. July 1698. Sano Ichiro, the samurai detective who has risen to become the shogun's second-in-command, is investigating rumors of a plot to overthrow the ruling regime. When the investigation brings Sano's deputy Hirata to Lord Mori's estate, he is shocked to find Lord Mori murdered and grotesquely mutilated in his own bed, and Sano's pregnant wife, Reiko, lying beside him. The only solid clue is a chrysanthemum soaked in blood. Reiko's account of her actions is anything but solid. She insists that she went undercover to Lord Mori's estate in order to investigate claims that he molested and murdered young boys. But when Sano inspects the crime scene, he finds no trace of what Reiko described. And every other witness tells a different story: Lady Mori alleges that Reiko was Lord Mori's scorned mistress and murdered him for revenge. And Lord Mori himself, speaking through a medium, claims his murder was part of Sano's plot to overthrow the shogun! Unless Sano can prove his wife's unlikely claims, both he and Reiko—and their unborn child—face execution for treason. Sano fights desperately to save his family and his honor.

Book Comrade Loves of the Samurai

Download or read book Comrade Loves of the Samurai written by Ihara Saikaku and published by Tuttle Publishing. This book was released on 2011-06-07 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Comrade Loves of a Samurai, the theme of homosexual love between the samurai is explored. To the old Japanese such love among samurai was quite permissible. The sons of samurai families were urged to form homosexual alliances while youth lasted, and often these loves matured into lifelong companionships. Saikaku describes Japanese love scenes of all kinds with a frankness that has made him a favorite with expurgators, but he discusses different types of love with tenderness and compassion. The Songs of the Geisha included in this volume is a collection of geisha folk songs composed to be sung to the accompaniment of the shamisen. All of the songs have a charmingly nostalgic quality which fitted well with the time and the circumstances for which they were composed. They are intimately personal, expressing the feelings of the geisha towards their sympathetic listeners. Love, frustration, and the futility of hope are their main themes. These lyrics, for all their erotic symbolism, are restrained and tactful, and their erotic beauty must be felt rather than heard. Both books were originally privately published in London in 1928 as a two volume set entitled Eastern Love.

Book The Flowers and Gardens of Japan

Download or read book The Flowers and Gardens of Japan written by Florence Du Cane and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2013-05-24 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: IT is safe to assert that no other country has such a distinctive form of landscape gardening as Japan. In English, French, Italian, and Dutch gardens, however original in their way, there are certain things they seem all to possess in common: terraces, which originally belonged to Italian gardens, were soon introduced into France; clipped trees, which were a distinctive feature of Dutch gardens, were copied by the English; the fashion of decorating gardens with flights of stone steps, balustrades, fountains, and statues at one time spread from Italy throughout Europe; and possibly the over-decoration of gardens led to a change in taste in England and a return to a more natural style.

Book The Chrysanthemum Contingency

Download or read book The Chrysanthemum Contingency written by James Couch and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2003-06-25 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Chrysanthemum Contingency As the U.S. expends its major international efforts on its war against worldwide terrorism, the United States' apparent interest regarding East Asia is at an historic low ebb. Into this power vacuum come China and Japan, each quietly and relentlessly pursuing their own individual goals aimed at controlling the region. Several American foreign correspondents stationed in Tokyo become entangled in a critical revelation of secret negotiations between the two Asian powers that would, if successful, result in the exit of U.S. influence in the area and a dangerous future for all concerned, as nuclear arms and military capabilities expand for national defense purposes. A compelling story exposing current activities which may soon threaten world peace. Another reality based novel by the author of The Fugi Agenda, The Lotus And The Rose, USSA 2020, and Decay of Ivy.
