Book The French Labor Movement

Download or read book The French Labor Movement written by Val Rogin Lorwin and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 1954 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is based on careful historical analysis and personal observation. Dr. Lorwin has broken his material down under three main headings: first, an abbreviated history of the origins and development of French unionism through 1944; second, a close examination of the critical years 1944-53, which saw the reunification in the Confédération Générale du Travail of the Communists purged in 1940, and the subsequent bolt of the anti-Communists to form the Confédération Générale du Travail-Force Ouvrière; and, third, an analysis of the international life of French unions, their bargaining techniques, their structure, and their goals. While the discussion in the first two parts of the book is significant, the major contribution to knowledge is in the third section. An extremely valuable analysis for those who are concerned with the nature of French unionism, students of political behavior, and particularly to those who are engaged in discriminating between institutional myths and institutional realities.

Book excerpt: First published in 1977, France 1870-1914 combines an outline of events with an analytical treatment of the main political institutions and forces of the Third Republic, relating them to their social context. After an introductory narrative chapter, Dr Anderson discusses the social bases of politics, regional variations in political behaviour, parties and political leadership, and the parliamentary system. There are sections on the Republicans and Radicals, the Right, and the working-class movement, and a separate chapter is devoted to foreign and colonial policy. The success of the Third Republic as a working political system and a distinctive form of parliamentary democracy is emphasized. The author also provides a framework of interpretative ideas which makes the book stimulating as well as informative. This is a must read for scholars and researchers of French history and French politics.

Book The Developing of the Radical Rights in France

Download or read book The Developing of the Radical Rights in France written by Edward J. Arnold and published by Springer. This book was released on 2000-05-23 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book traces the origins and evolution of extreme-right wing thought in France from the end of the nineteenth century to the present day. It establishes the presence of an ideological tradition or organicist, exclusive nationalism initiated at the end of the nineteenth century, which adapts itself to the post-First World War and re-emerges forcibly during the Occupation. Elements of this same tradition are present in the modern discourse of the extreme right in post-war France. This helps the student of modern French politics to see movements like the Front National in their historical perspective.

Book Class and Other Identities

Download or read book Class and Other Identities written by Lex Heerma van Voss and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2002 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the onset of a more conservative political climate in the 1980s, social and especially labour history saw a decline in the popularity that they had enjoyed throughout the 1960s and 1970s. This led to much debate on its future and function within the historical discipline as a whole. Some critics declared it dead altogether. Others have proposed a change of direction and a more or less exclusive focus on images and texts. The most constructive proposals have suggested that labour history in the past concentrated too much on class and that other identities of working people should be taken into account to a larger extent than they had been previously, such as gender, religion, and ethnicity. Although class as a social category is still as valid as it has been before, the questions now to be asked are to what extent non-class identities shape working people's lives and mentalities and how these are linked with the class system. In this volume some of the leading European historians of labour and the working classes address these questions. Two non-European scholars comment on their findings from an Indian, resp. American, point of view. The volume is rounded off by a most useful bibliography of recent studies in European labour history, class, gender, religion, and ethnicity.

Book Historical Dictionary of Sweden

Download or read book Historical Dictionary of Sweden written by Elisabeth Elgán and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2015-09-17 with total page 419 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sweden’s transformation in the last century was brought about not by the military prowess of exceptional Swedes (indeed neutrality has been a key element in Swedish policy for almost two centuries) but by the creative ability of its people. Sweden has emerged as a model welfare state and a well-ordered democracy, to which economists, sociologists, feminists, architects, and scientists from sophisticated nations have paid study visits. Sweden now depends on international trade to preserve its high standard of living and, in a world of harsh international competition, often has to struggle to maintain its welfare system and its reputation. Despite its present difficulties, however, it remains one of the world’s most advanced and affluent democracies. This third edition of Historical Dictionary of Sweden contains a chronology, an introduction, appendixes, an extensive bibliography, and a dictionary section with more than 300 cross-referenced entries on important personalities, politics, economy, foreign relations, religion, and culture. This book is an excellent access point for students, researchers, and anyone wanting to know more about Sweden.

Book Stagg vs Yost

Download or read book Stagg vs Yost written by John Kryk and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2015-07-16 with total page 419 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Corruption, scandals, and reports of wrongdoing in college football are constantly in the news. From Penn State’s Joe Paterno to Ohio State’s Jim Tressel, we have come to learn that some of the most lauded coaches don’t always live up to their saintly reputations. Perhaps no era of college football was ever more emblematic of this than the early 1900s, a time when coaches worked the system with merciless flair to recruit the best players and then keep them eligible to play, even while other coaches were trying to steal already-enrolled players from rival universities. Amos Alonzo Stagg of the University of Chicago and Fielding H. Yost of the University of Michigan were no exception, and their bitter rivalry is one for the ages. In Stagg vs. Yost: The Birth of Cutthroat Football, John Kryk brings to life a story that is both timeless and familiar to all football fans, indeed to all sports fans: one man’s obsession to end the pain of a long losing streak to a hated rival. This is the story of how Amos Alonzo Stagg covertly punted many of the principles he espoused in order to dismantle one of the most powerful machines the game has known—Fielding Yost’s Michigan Wolverines. Kryk reveals the extent to which Stagg schemed to achieve victory against the “Point a Minute” Wolverines and the lengths Yost went to prevent that from happening. In addition, this book provides insight into college athletics’ corruption as a whole during this time, from under-the-table payments to recruits to contracted loans from wealthy boosters—and why the current NCAA rulebook contains page after page of recruiting and eligibility regulations. Featuring never-before-published internal correspondences of UM athletic leaders, Stagg’s surviving letters and notes, and reports from newspapers of the day, Stagg vs. Yost brings fresh insight into two legends of college football who would do almost anything to win. This book is a noteworthy and fascinating narrative for football fans, historians, and anyone interested in seeing where cutthroat college recruiting and coaching all began.
