Book excerpt: The "Chronicles of Caroline Casey" features four novellas about the mystical, magical adventures of a high school girl who has the power to see a supernatural world that is invisible to most humans. Caroline also has the ability to discern truth from lies with perfect accuracy. This ability as a "lie detector" proves to be very valuable as Caroline and her friends fight against the forces of evil. The four novellas in this book are:The Magical Truths of Caroline CaseyThe Magical Truths of Phoenix RisingThe Magical Truths of Betwixt and BetweenThe Magical Truths of the Immortal Maiden Although Caroline would like to lead the life of an ordinary teenager, she bravely chooses to help the forces of good. Her friends include two gnomes (Hob and Nob), a troll named Sylvester, elves, fairies, and a qilin (with the head of a dragon and the body of a tiger). After Caroline travels through a mystical gateway to Ireland, she meets a young man whom she finds both annoying and intriguing. *************Excerpt: When I awoke in the hammock, I felt completely refreshed. I felt like I had been asleep for ten hours. I was momentarily concerned that I would be very late getting home. However, glancing at the time on my cell phone, I found that I had only slept for two hours. Was this woodland infused with a mystical energy that renewed the body and soul? Realizing that I did not have to rush home, I lay back in the hammock and let the cool breeze flow over me.The sound of the beautiful voice of a male singer came drifting through the trees. "Come, take lightFrom the Light that never fades.Come, glorify the Victor King!" Anticipating that the elf who was singing was about to enter the clearing, I hopped out of the hammock and stood there waiting for the elf's arrival. I was completely taken off-guard by what happened next. When you're in the middle of an elven woodland, I suppose that it would be surprising not to have surprises. A very large black dog with a brown snout came bounding into the clearing. Startled, I jumped back and almost fell back into the hammock. The Rottweiler stood there snarling at me. I wondered whether he was a shapeshifter who had come to complete the task at which the other shapeshifter had failed. Was he a shapeshifter who had come to kill me? This creature's huge, sharp teeth could easily inflict fatal wounds. Then came the second surprise. A tall young man carrying a wooden staff came striding into the clearing. He had curly black hair and appeared to be about twenty years old. He looked surprised to see me and instantly stopped singing. He raised his staff as though he intended to strike me with it. "Keep away from me!" I exclaimed."Who are you?" he asked, glaring at me."You are not an elf!" I pointed at him accusingly."Neither are you!" he retorted. "What are you doing here?""If you hit me with that staff, the elf warriors will kill you!" I warned him.He slightly lowered the staff, but kept it ready in a defensive position."Would you please call off your dog?" I said, glancing at the Rottweiler, who continued to snarl at me."Relax, boy." He reached down and petted the dog's back. The dog lay down and stopped snarling, but he continued to watch me warily.*************Joseph Rogers has other novels and stories that include:Wanderer of Worlds: A Magical Thriller Sentinels at the Gates: A Telepathic ThrillerHallowed Eve, Hallowed Day: a supernatural suspense storyMaiden of Orleans: A Bayou ThrillerMoonlight Warriors: A Tale of Two Hit MenThe Powers That Be: A Supernatural ThrillerRealm of Haden: A Space-Age FantasyThe Snow MaidenSprite of the Light: a fairy taleA Princess and her Five Suitors: a fairy taleA Visitor on Christmas EveThe Mysterious GiftEssential ThingsThe author's website JoeRogers.homestead.com includes information about his stories, novels, plays, and poems.

Download or read book The Illuminated Chronicle written by János M. Bak and published by Central European University Press. This book was released on 2018-07-01 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Illuminated Chronicle was composed in 1358 in the international artistic style at the royal court of Louis I of Hungary. Its text, presented here in a new edition and translation, is the most complete record of Hungary's medieval historical tradition, going back to the eleventh century and including the mythical past of its people. The pictures in this manuscript—formerly known as the Vienna Chronicle—are not merely occasional illustrations added to some exemplars, but text and image are closely connected and mutually related to each other, to qualify it as a proper “illuminated chronicle”. The artistic value of the miniatures is quite high, and the characters are drawn with detail and with a knowledge of anatomy. Forty-two of the miniatures are included in the present volume. A full color facsimile will be accessible online. The 147 pictures are an invaluable source of information on late medieval cultural history, costume, and court life. In a historiographical context, The Illuminated Chronicle is an attempt at the popularization of the national history and a systematic appeal to circles beyond the old monastic-clerical audience. The Illuminated Chronicle (Chronica de gestis Hungarorum e codice picto saec. xiv.) is the ninth volume in the Central European Medieval Texts, a Latin–English bilingual series.

Book The Architecture Chronicle

Download or read book The Architecture Chronicle written by Jan Kattein and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 564 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the last 30 years, technological, social, economic and environmental changes have brought about the most dramatic evolution to architectural practice that has taken place since the profession emerged during the Italian Renaissance. Whilst these changes have transformed the way architects work, few contemporary books discuss architectural practice. The Architecture Chronicle sets out to define the role of the contemporary architect in the light of these changes. Most books on architecture start when a building is complete, carefully editing out any evidence of the design and production process. The Architecture Chronicle engages with the design and production process. It investigates how and by whom design decisions are made and executed. Chapter 1 is a diary reporting on the design and realisation of five stage sets and one urban intervention over a period of four years, starting on 16 December 2003. The diary is intercepted by references that are, where appropriate, carefully integrated in the overall narrative. Chapter 2 reflects on the diary to discover patterns and cross-references and to draw conclusions. The contemporary architect can be defined as three distinct characters. The architect-inventor challenges conventions and questions the social status quo. The architect-activist transgresses the boundary of the profession and enters the construction process. The architect-arbitrator engages the audience to realise the ambitious project. The Architecture Chronicle concludes that the contemporary architect still draws and writes, but that it is often the architect’s ability to engage and direct that asserts his or her status. To assert his or her status in the design team, the architect’s ability to talk and to act is more important than his or her ability to draw and write.
