Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chronicles of a Kentucky Settlement After having been actively engaged for twenty-five years in commercial pursuits, in America and Europe, the time came when a long and severe illness left me such a cripple that I have since been unable to engage in any active employment. Then (in 1883) to while away hours that would otherwise have been tedious, I began writing some incidents in the life of one of the early settlers of Livingston County, intending to present the sketches to one of my children. As I progressed, I became so much interested in my work that, knowing as I did many of the pioneer settlers of the county, I went far beyond my original design, and hence this book. Its title, "Chronicles of a Kentucky Settlement," was suggested to me by an old friend, a fine scholar and a competent critic, as best fitting the character of the work. The book, however, is not, as some may infer from its title, a Local History. I endeavored to make it of interest to general readers. The first entry of lands in the Virginia Military District when opened at Louisville, Kentucky, in 1784, was in Livingston County, at the junction of the Ohio and Cumberland Rivers. Book Stories of Old Kentucky Classic Reprint

Download or read book Stories of Old Kentucky Classic Reprint written by Martha Grassham Purcell and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-06 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stories of Old Kentucky To be easily assimilated, our mental food, like our physical food, should be carefully chosen and attractively served. The history of the "Dark and Bloody Ground" teems with adventure and patriotism. Its pages are filled with the great achievements, the heroic deeds, and the inspiring examples of the explorers, the settlers, and the founders of our state. In the belief that a knowledge of their struggles and conquests is food that is both instructive and inspiring, and with a knowledge that a text on history does not always attract, the author sets before the youth of Kentucky these stories of some of her great men. This book is intended as both a supplementary reader and a text, for, though in story form, the chapters are arranged chronologically, and every fact recorded has been verified. Thanks are due to the many friend who have granted access to papers of historical value, to many others who have assisted in making this book a reality, and especially to my husband, Dr. Clyde Edison Purcell, for his valuable suggestions, careful criticisms, and untiring cooperation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Nick of the Woods: A Story of the Early Settlers in Kentucky These remarks will serve as an explanation, and, if it be necessary, as an apology for some of the characters that figure in the following pages, particularly that of the hon est colonel of militia. In a story written to illustrate the early period in which those men were busily engaged in strengthening and securing their little State - a period the darkest and stormiest in the annals of the Indian border it was both fitting and necessary that some representative of the race should appear. The outlines may be ruder than was proper or just; but they will be the better foil to the generous qualities of spirit, common at that day to all the men of Bruce's class. Consequently, for many years he made frequent trips into the territory, stay ing as long as two years on one occa sion, and winning the title of The Long Hunter. Boone was alone on many of these trips, never seeing the face of a white man, but frequently meeting roving bands of Indians. From a cave in the side of Pilot Knob in Powell County, he could catch glimpses of the joyous sports of the Shawnee boys at Indian Fields; and from the projecting rocks he feasted his eyes on the herds of buffalo winding across the prairie. Hisyounger brother had fallen early in the conflict, borne to the end of his brief warfare by his impetuous valor; his aged mother had sunk under the tidings of the death of her latest-born; his sister was estranged from him by his po litical differences with her husband; his old family servants, men and women, had left him, and grass and weeds had already grown over the door-steps of the shut, noiseless cabins. Nay, the whole vast social system of the old regime had fallen, and he was henceforth but a useless fragment of the ruins.
