It is also worthy of note that the business activities Of the family have been chie y exerted in the line of agriculture, which has justly been placed at the head of the sciences, and which, as Washington wrote, is the most health ful, most useful, and most noble employment Of man. For more than one hundred and twenty-five years, the men Of the family, with few exceptions, engaged in farming, and each was the owner of the plantation he cultivated, which was usually one of large dimensions.
