This book was released on 2023-08-15 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Boudreaux Pierre, The Chronicles of a Southern Gentleman," is the first in a series of short stories and a collection of soul-penetrating poetry, based on the life of Boudreaux Pierre. A modern-day swashbuckler, Boudreaux is a lover of fun, expensive brown liquor and extravagant cigars; but most importantly, he is a lover of women. Growing up in Dallas, Texas, "Bou," as his friends (and foes) call him, spent most of his young life on the stoops of back-alley liquor stores. While most kids his age were dunking balls on a basketball court or scoring touchdowns on the football field, Bou spent his days hanging out in barber shops and shooting dice with cats twice his age, ingesting their words of wisdom about life, love and hustling. This collective of men were connoisseurs of fine cigars and the ladies, and taught Bou everything there was to know about women - including how to love them, how to live with them and how to leave them. And that's where the story begins...

Book excerpt: In some small Southern towns the old ways still exist. Breeding counts and the old boys hold court. Everyone has a place and no one's supposed to cross the line. But rules are made to be broken... In Southern Gentlemen, authors Jennifer Blake and Emilie Richards deliver two contemporary stories of family, love and betrayal, all set against the colorful backdrop of the Deep South. This is their South—filled with old families, old money and old grudges. A place where the finest women are ladies and the best men are gentlemen. And where men from the wrong side of town have more honor than all the blue bloods combined.

Book Andrew Jackson Southerner

Download or read book Andrew Jackson Southerner written by Mark R. Cheathem and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 2013-10-07 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many Americans view Andrew Jackson as a frontiersman who fought duels, killed Indians, and stole another man's wife. Historians have traditionally presented Jackson as a man who struggled to overcome the obstacles of his backwoods upbringing and helped create a more democratic United States. In his compelling new biography of Jackson, Mark R. Cheathem argues for a reassessment of these long-held views, suggesting that in fact "Old Hickory" lived as an elite southern gentleman. Jackson grew up along the border between North Carolina and South Carolina, a district tied to Charleston, where the city's gentry engaged in the transatlantic marketplace. Jackson then moved to North Carolina, where he joined various political and kinship networks that provided him with entrée into society. In fact, Cheathem contends, Jackson had already started to assume the characteristics of a southern gentleman by the time he arrived in Middle Tennessee in 1788. After moving to Nashville, Jackson further ensconced himself in an exclusive social order by marrying the daughter of one of the city's cofounders, engaging in land speculation, and leading the state militia. Cheathem notes that through these ventures Jackson grew to own multiple plantations and cultivated them with the labor of almost two hundred slaves. His status also enabled him to build a military career focused on eradicating the nation's enemies, including Indians residing on land desired by white southerners. Jackson's military success eventually propelled him onto the national political stage in the 1820s, where he won two terms as president. Jackson's years as chief executive demonstrated the complexity of the expectations of elite white southern men, as he earned the approval of many white southerners by continuing to pursue Manifest Destiny and opposing the spread of abolitionism, yet earned their ire because of his efforts to fight nullification and the Second Bank of the United States. By emphasizing Jackson's southern identity -- characterized by violence, honor, kinship, slavery, and Manifest Destiny -- Cheathem's narrative offers a bold new perspective on one of the nineteenth century's most renowned and controversial presidents.

Book 2017 Chronicles of Secession

Download or read book 2017 Chronicles of Secession written by F.J. Fojo and published by Palibrio. This book was released on 2013-07-31 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These chronicles gather the most important events that took place during the stormy winter of 2016 and 2017, along with the actions and destinies of some of the most relevant characters that participated in them. They all move in the setting of a shift of government in Washington and a world where the most diverse and controversial interests stir; political fiction with the hints of possibility. Real and imaginary characters take part to give life to the plot that cannot cease from being feasible, just for being novelistic. Let us remember that the United States had, in its territory and amongst brothers, one of the bloodiest civil wars in the history of humanity. It served, among other things, to eliminate slavery and increase the power of the industrial north. It was a war that ended with the crushing and humiliating defeat of the Confederacy, but not with the latent and ever-present desire for secession. Politics, intrigue, money, betrayal, diplomacy, violence, cowardice, bonds of friendship, hate, pride, weapons, egos, and racism. The ingredients of todays world and also, surely, of the futures.
