In this tenth year's worth of entries from a diary stored on a futuristic recording device found after a house fire, Andrew Woodmaker investigates the patterns of a serial killer, and ponders a life-changing decision. In 2023, Middle Eastern tensions spread, as the Americans become involved in the conflict. On Mercury, the Russian mission makes a surprising discovery, while the British Skylon finally attempts its first mission into space. Andrew Woodmaker is persuaded to begin a new investigation, but at work his hopes are dashed as an important job goes to someone else. Nobody knows if this is a work of fiction or a true record of how things happened, and will happen. By reading the diary, some things may have already begun to change, and the future is not what it was. But it could be that this is how it would have been.

Book A Defense of Judgment

    Book Details:
  • Author : Michael W. Clune
  • Publisher : University of Chicago Press
  • Release : 2021-04-23
  • ISBN : 022677029X
  • Pages : 255 pages

Download or read book A Defense of Judgment written by Michael W. Clune and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2021-04-23 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Teachers of literature make judgments about value. They tell their students which works are powerful, beautiful, surprising, strange, or insightful—and thus, which are more worthy of time and attention than others. Yet the field of literary studies has largely disavowed judgments of artistic value on the grounds that they are inevitably rooted in prejudice or entangled in problems of social status. For several decades now, professors have called their work value-neutral, simply a means for students to gain cultural, political, or historical knowledge. ?Michael W. Clune’s provocative book challenges these objections to judgment and offers a positive account of literary studies as an institution of aesthetic education. It is impossible, Clune argues, to separate judgments about literary value from the practices of interpretation and analysis that constitute any viable model of literary expertise. Clune envisions a progressive politics freed from the strictures of dogmatic equality and enlivened by education in aesthetic judgment, transcending consumer culture and market preferences. Drawing on psychological and philosophical theories of knowledge and perception, Clune advocates for the cultivation of what John Keats called “negative capability,” the capacity to place existing criteria in doubt and to discover new concepts and new values in artworks. Moving from theory to practice, Clune takes up works by Keats, Emily Dickinson, Gwendolyn Brooks, Samuel Beckett, and Thomas Bernhard, showing how close reading—the profession’s traditional key skill—harnesses judgment to open new modes of perception.

Book Newsom Unleashed

Download or read book Newsom Unleashed written by Ellie Gardey Holmes and published by Bombardier Books. This book was released on 2024-06-18 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gavin Newsom has been a force in California politics since the 1990s, having acquired power through the machinations of his family and friends. As mayor of San Francisco, his Hollywood mystique and historic progressive policies meant that he could do no wrong—even when he was caught having an affair with his secretary, who also happened to be his friend’s wife. Eventually, however, Newsom’s brazen pursuit of power caused even the Left to sour on him, forcing him into the purgatory that was the lieutenant governor’s office. But suave, cocky, and unrelenting, Newsom soon claimed the governorship, where he was free to insert woke policies into every aspect of Californians’ lives. With Jennifer Siebel Newsom, his glamorous but scandal-ridden “first partner,” at his side, Newsom has pushed California leftward into a dirtier and more dangerous version of itself—and positioned himself for his ultimate goal: the White House. This account probes Newsom’s life and influence, addressing the homelessness crisis, COVID lockdowns, the recall, the education wars, and his combative relationships with Ron DeSantis and Donald Trump, while also shedding new light on issues like his relationship with a teenager as mayor, his New Age wedding, and his financial scandals. As a result, the real Gavin Newsom is uncovered—the one behind the veil of media adoration.

Book The Present Professor

    Book Details:
  • Author : Elizabeth A. Norell
  • Publisher : University of Oklahoma Press
  • Release : 2024-12-03
  • ISBN : 0806195177
  • Pages : 262 pages

Download or read book The Present Professor written by Elizabeth A. Norell and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2024-12-03 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It’s hard to learn when you’re under stress, and a lot harder when your teacher is struggling with stress, too. In a world where stress is unavoidable—where political turmoil, pandemic fallout, and personal challenges touch everyone—this timely book offers much-needed guidance for cutting through the emotional static that can hold teachers back. A specialist in pedagogical strategies with extensive classroom experience, Elizabeth A. Norell explains how an educator’s presence, or authenticity, can be critical to creating transformational spaces for students. And presence, she argues, means uncovering and understanding one’s own internal struggles and buried insecurities—stresses often left unconfronted in an academic culture that values knowing over feeling. Presenting the research on how and why such inner work unlocks transformational learning, The Present Professor equips educators with the tools for crafting a more authentic presence in their teaching work. At a time of crisis in higher education, as teachers struggle to find new ways to relate to, think about, and instruct students, this book holds a key. Implementing more inclusive pedagogies, Norell suggests, requires sorting out our own identities. In short, if we want to create spaces where students have the confidence, comfort, and psychological safety to learn and grow, we have to create spaces where we do, too. The Present Professor is dedicated to that proposition, and to helping educators build that transformational space.

Book The Complete Beatles Chronicle

Download or read book The Complete Beatles Chronicle written by Mark Lewisohn and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1979, Beatles expert Mark Lewisohn set about establishing a complete list of the group’s live appearances from 1957 through 1966, when they stopped giving concerts; the research took seven long years and was published as the book The Beatles Live! Shortly thereafter, EMI Records invited Lewisohn to be the only person outside of the Beatles and their production staff to go into Abbey Road and listen to the entire collection of Beatles session tapes and to interview practically everyone involved in their making. The result was published in 1988 as The Complete Beatles Recording Sessions, and sold over 150,000 copies. This book artfully combines and updates all the vital material in Lewisohn’s earlier two books with his definitive account of the Beatles’ work in radio, television, film, and video to create a complete day-by-day summary of the group’s entire oeuvre. First published in 1992, The Complete Beatles Chronicle has become the Beatles Bible, the one book no fan can live without, and a perfect companion to the bestselling Beatles Anthology, which recounted their story in their own words.

Book The Resilient University

Download or read book The Resilient University written by Freeman A. Hrabowski III and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2024-01-09 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How university leaders' empowering approach to resiliency was tested by the dual crises of the COVID-19 pandemic and racial unrest. In 2020, some higher education leaders successfully navigated the unprecedented challenges the year presented and emerged as resilient agents of change in their academic communities. Freeman A. Hrabowski III was one of many leaders who followed the science during the pandemic and followed his heart in the fight for racial justice, even though the science was often playing catch-up with the virus, and campuses were playing catch-up on the history of race in our country. This precarious position often left higher education leaders in the disquieting position of making decisions with only partial or changing information. Drawing from lessons learned in real scenarios, the authors provide practical recommendations for empowering colleagues, cultivating resilience and courage, and sustaining purpose and inclusion within institutions. Building on Hrabowski's previous book The Empowered University, The Resilient University offers university leaders invaluable insight into how the qualities of openness, resilience, courage, passion, and hope can be harnessed in times of crisis to guide their institutions to thrive.
