Book Chronic disease in Ontario and Canada

Download or read book Chronic disease in Ontario and Canada written by and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The views, opinions and policies expressed in this document are those of the authors and do not necessarily reflect the perspectives of the organizations that they are affiliated with nor the Public Health Agency of Canada or the Ontario Public Health Association. [...] The purpose of the report is multi-dimensional: • A primary goal is to draw links between evidence, determinants, and risk factors of chronic disease in Canada, and consider options for health messages and action steps. [...] This provides a resource for closing the disjunction between the "informally approved" and "popular" risk factors in many Canadian initiatives, and the more comprehensive approach to risk factors highlighted in the global burden of disease analysis by the World Health Organization (WHO) ( ). [...] While the causes of particular cases of chronic disease in individuals can be assessed in the clinical context - and are often linked to behavioural factors - the causes of incidence in the population at large may be different. [...] The research methodologies for studying the role of distal factors have been less consistent and less sophisticated (because of the difficulties in the application of "gold standard" research methodologies), and thus have not allowed for the evidence of these factors to be as strong as those considered proximal.

Book The Economic And Health Burden Of Chronic Pain In Ontario

Download or read book The Economic And Health Burden Of Chronic Pain In Ontario written by Mary-Ellen Hogan and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chronic pain is a common problem, affecting 1 in 5 Canadians. Despite this, the burden of chronic pain has not been fully investigated in Canada. This research sought to characterize the burden of chronic pain in Ontario, Canada in three studies. Individuals with and without chronic pain who were identified through the Canadian Community Health Survey (CCHS) were matched using propensity score methods on demographic and comorbidity variables using linked healthcare administrative data. The first study estimated the annual incremental cost to manage chronic pain at $1,742 per person, 51% more than the control group. This translated into $2.8 billion (reference year 2014), or 5% of the Ontario publicly funded health budget. The second study estimated health utilities from the CCHS as a measure of health-related quality of life in people with chronic pain. Utilities are anchored by 0 (dead) and 1 (perfect health), with a difference of 0.03 being clinically meaningful. The mean utility for people with chronic pain was estimated at 0.59 compared to 0.90 for those without. These utilities were lower than those seen with most other chronic diseases including heart disease, diabetes and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. The third study described mortality by following people until December 2013. There were numerically more deaths in the chronic pain group (2,063 versus 1,722) and a higher death rate for chronic pain as measured by the Kaplan Meier product limit estimator (p.

Book Weight Control and Physical Activity

Download or read book Weight Control and Physical Activity written by Harri Vainio and published by IARC. This book was released on 2002 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Avoiding overweight and obesity is the best-established diet-related risk factor for cancer. The proportion of people who are overweight/obese is increasing, and the amount of physical activity is decreasing in most populations, including urban populations in many developing countries. The increasing prevalence of overweight/obesity is presumably due to the increasing availability of highly palatable, high-energy foods, and an increasing sedentary lifestyle due to mechanisation of both workplace and leisure activities. Overweight/obesity and reduced physical activity increases the risk of cancers in various organs. Maintaining a healthy body weight and regular physical activity is the second most important way to prevent cancer, after tobacco control. The suggestions of possible public health actions to tackle these risk factors include the promotion of balanced diets, which are not excessive in energy, and broad education and planning to enable and encourage physical activity during work and leisure. Recommendations and a full discussion of these topics are included in the sixth volume in this series of Handbooks.

Download or read book Learning from SARS written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2004-04-26 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The emergence of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) in late 2002 and 2003 challenged the global public health community to confront a novel epidemic that spread rapidly from its origins in southern China until it had reached more than 25 other countries within a matter of months. In addition to the number of patients infected with the SARS virus, the disease had profound economic and political repercussions in many of the affected regions. Recent reports of isolated new SARS cases and a fear that the disease could reemerge and spread have put public health officials on high alert for any indications of possible new outbreaks. This report examines the response to SARS by public health systems in individual countries, the biology of the SARS coronavirus and related coronaviruses in animals, the economic and political fallout of the SARS epidemic, quarantine law and other public health measures that apply to combating infectious diseases, and the role of international organizations and scientific cooperation in halting the spread of SARS. The report provides an illuminating survey of findings from the epidemic, along with an assessment of what might be needed in order to contain any future outbreaks of SARS or other emerging infections.

Book Chronic Disease Development and Multimorbidity Among Immigrants and Refugees in Ontario

Download or read book Chronic Disease Development and Multimorbidity Among Immigrants and Refugees in Ontario written by Setareh Rouhani and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chronic diseases such as cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular and respiratory diseases are a global concern. In recent decades, Canada has also experienced a major increase in immigration. Yet, a detailed profile of chronic disease and multimorbidity risk patterns across different immigrant populations has been lacking in Canada. The purpose of this dissertation is to identify knowledge gaps in the scientific literature on the development of chronic conditions and multimorbidity across immigrant populations in Ontario, using population-based immigrant and health data housed at ICES. The principal findings of this dissertation indicate that: 1. The risk of developing a chronic condition and multimorbidity was complex and varied by immigrants' visa category and world region origin since: a. Refugees had the highest risk of developing a chronic condition and multimorbidity (two or more co-occurring chronic conditions) compared to long-term Ontario residents. b. There were differences in the risk of developing a chronic condition and multimorbidity by world regions of origin, when examined across different immigrant categories. 2. Hypertension and diabetes, and in combination with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease were the leading multimorbidity dyad and triad groups for all immigrant categories and long-term residents of Ontario. 3. The risk of developing a chronic condition increased among immigrants in more recent landing cohorts. The risk was highest among more recent refugees, and lower for family and economic class immigrants, when compared to long-term Ontario residents. These findings provide evidence to inform public health policy and planning by highlighting the complexity and heterogeneity of health outcomes across immigrant populations. Knowledge generated from this work will inform policies and evidence-based decision-making aimed to address the threat of chronic diseases and reduce health disparities.
