Book excerpt: Excerpt from Constipation and Allied Intestinal Disorders The present volume is a new book rather than a second edition of my work on Constipation and Allied Intestinal Disorders, which was published in August 1909, as it has to a great extent been rewritten, and new chapters have been added on methods of examination, intestinal adhesions, visceroptosis, stasis in the caecum and ascending colon, and spa treatment. A revised version of the original edition was translated into French by Dr. Reboul of Chatel-Guyon in 1912. The first edition was the outcome of three years' research on the physiology and pathology of the movements of the alimentary canal, and during the succeeding five years I devoted much time to further investigations on the subject. I have been fortunate in having had the invaluable assistance of numerous friends, most of whom were students of Guys Hospital, in the original research embodied in the work. I desire specially to express my indebtedness to my fellow workers Messrs. H. W. Barber, F. Cook, A. Neville Cox, H. T. Depree, K. Digby, H. Gardiner, W. Johnson, G. H. Marshall, C. S. It includes characteristics of classical and ultrashort Hirschsprung’s disease as well as total intestinal aganglionosis and hypoganglionosis. New diseases such as intestinal neuronal dysplasia, desmosis coli, leiomyopathy, architectural malformation, and stretching lesions of muscularis propria are critically discussed. Atrophic desmosis is also covered. This new and frequently observed degeneration of muscularis propria in Crohn’s disease, sigmoid diverticulitis, and other inflammatory intestinal diseases causes focal aperistalsis, frequently interpreted as scar stenosis. 'Histopathology of Chronic Constipation' provides a comprehensive overview of intestinal alterations which cause chronic constipation. It is therefore of special interest to diagnostic pathologists, clinicians, pediatric and abdominal surgeons, coloproctologists, and gastroenterologists.
