Download or read book Genetics in Aquaculture written by Graham A.E. Gall and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume, the proceedings of the Fourth International Symposium on Genetics in Aquaculture, builds on the foundations laid down at the first symposium, held in Galway, Ireland in 1982 (Aquaculture, Volume 33), as well as those laid down at the second, held in Davis, California, USA in 1985 (Genetics in Aquaculture II), and the third, held in Trondheim, Norway in 1988 (Genetics in Aquaculture III). It addresses specific problems and developments in this field, demonstrating the tremendous breadth of research activity as well as the complexity of issues in aquaculture genetics. This book will be of great value to aquaculturists, fisheries scientists and marine biologists.(The above-mentioned proceedings of the first three conferences are still available).

Book excerpt: This book is the first to report that research in allogenics/xenogenics has conclusively shown that fishes have retained bisexual potency even after sexual maturity and spermiation. The XY genotype found in the unexpected female phenotypes sired by supermales (Y1Y2) and androgenic males (Y2Y2) points out the need to employ sex specific molecular ma

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1989 a number of scientists representing the leading groups of genetic engineers in universities, government agencies and industrial laboratories presented their most recent findings at the Second Symposium on Genetic Engineering of Animals. The papers contained in this volume represent state of the art technology in the production of transgenic animals ranging from mice to cattle. The emphasis is definitely on domestic animals including sheep, pigs, cattle and poultry, but a number of papers are primarily based on recent developments in mice and rabbits and one paper concerns the production of transgenic fish.

This book was released on 1997-11-30 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human beings have a long historical relationship with the coast. Initially it provided food and security, later forming important locations for industrial and commercial development. Now the emphasis has shifted towards leisure and conservation, although the former functions remain crucial. However, it is only very recently that people have started viewing the coast as a common and valuable resource that requires rational utilisation and scientific management in order to sustain its attractiveness. Of course, enlightened management comes only through understanding of the complicated coastal regions, which enables coastal managers to balance pressures from different sectors and to minimize risks. Scientific knowledge will continue to be the most important basis for resolving the conflicts between coastal users and interest groups such as developers and ecologists. Coastal management has also shifted from traditional restorative or remedial actions towards planned avoidance of other conflicts. Despite rapid advancement in coastal sciences over recent decades, most of the major coastal issues have remained outstanding in the agenda. Control of shoreline erosion and protecting sea level rise continue to be crucial problems facing coastal scientists. Destructive coastal storms still cause tremendous damage, particularly in low altitudes. Wetland and estuary reclamation have led to the loss of the most valuable estuary wetlands which are required to sustain biological productivity and biodiversity. This volume includes papers on marine and coastal pollution, eutrophication, aquaculture, conservation and utilization, coastal wetlands, and coastal zone management.

Download or read book Aquatic Genomics written by N. Shimizu and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a scientific pursuit there is continual food for discovery and wonder. M. Shelley (1818) Genomic analysis of aquatic species has long been overshadowed by the superb activity of the human genome project. However, aquatic genomics is now in the limelight as evidenced by the recent accomplishment of fugu genome sequencing, which provided a significant foundation for comparative fish genomics. Undoubt edly, such progress will provide an exciting and unparalleled boost to our knowl edge of the genetics of aquatic species. Thus, aquatic genomics research has become a promising new research field with an impact on the fishery industry. It is notewor thy that the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations has projected that current global fisheries production will soon become insufficient to supply the increasing world population and that aquaculture has a great potential to fulfill that demand. This book, Aquatic Genomic. ~: Steps Toward a Great Future, was designed as a collection of advanced knowledge in aquatic genomics and biological sciences. It covers a variety of aquatic organisms including fish, crustaceans, and shellfish, and describes various advanced methodologies, including genome analysis, gene map ping, DNA markers, and EST analysis. Also included are discussions of many sub jects such as regulation of gene expression, stress and immune responses, sex differ entiation, hormonal control, and transgenic fishes.

Download or read book Molecular Research in Aquaculture written by Ken Overturf and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2009-09-23 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Molecular Research in Aquaculture Molecular research and biotechnology have long been fields of study with applications useful to aquaculture and other animal sciences. Molecular Research in Aquaculture looks to provide an understanding of molecular research and its applications to the aquaculture industry in a format that allows individuals without prior experience in this area to learn about and understand this important field. Molecular Research in Aquaculture opens with an introductory chapter giving background information on the aquaculture industry and the development of the science and research methods to what is currently being used. From there it discusses how new, innovative techniques are now being converted and used for research in this field. Introductory chapters on basic molecular biological techniques, such as PCR, cloning, and hybridization, and their rationale provide the foundation for an in-depth look at molecular research and its specific applications. The remaining chapters review key areas of molecular research such as microarray analysis, quantitative PCR, and transgenics. Molecular Research in Aquaculture will be a valuable reference for professionals and researchers with an interest in the development of molecular technologies and their applications to the field of aquaculture. Coverage of basic molecular biological techniques and their rationale In-depth look at molecular research and their applications to aquaculture Valuable reference on the developments of this key area in aquaculture research
