Book excerpt: This book investigates Colossians as a "captivity" letter from the primary implied author, the imprisoned Paul, to an implied audience of mainly Gentile converts currently in danger of influence by local Jews or Jewish Christians. Utilizing a text-centered, literary-rhetorical, and audience-oriented method, it demonstrates new chiastic structures for the entire letter that progressively encourage the audience to resist deceit and conduct themselves according to all the wisdom at their disposal as holy ones in Christ.

Book Delphi Collected Works of Martin Luther Illustrated

Download or read book Delphi Collected Works of Martin Luther Illustrated written by Martin Luther and published by Delphi Classics. This book was released on 2017-07-17 with total page 8604 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The German theologian and religious reformer, Martin Luther was the catalyst of the sixteenth century Protestant Reformation. Luther set on course a movement that reformulated the basic tenets of Christian belief, resulting in the division of Western Christendom between Roman Catholicism and the new Protestant traditions. One of the most influential figures in the history of Christianity, Luther produced a wide body of works, challenging the authority and office of the Pope by teaching that the Bible is the only source of divinely revealed knowledge. His landmark translation of the Bible into the German vernacular made religion more accessible to everyday people, having a tremendous impact on both the church and German culture. Book Kirche befreit zu Widerstand und Transformation Church Liberated for Resistance and Transformation

Download or read book Kirche befreit zu Widerstand und Transformation Church Liberated for Resistance and Transformation written by Karen Bloomquist and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2015 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Selected for graphic appeal, range of subject matter, and historic interest, these broadsides show the attitudes and literary appetites of Pennsylvania Germans as expressed in printed matter. Known for their love of color and decoration, Pennsylvania Germans often hand-illuminated broadsides so that many are classified as fraktur. Flying Leaves and One-Sheets will appeal to readers in Pennsylvania German visual arts, culture, and history."--BOOK JACKET.

Book Bach Against Modernity

    Book Details:
  • Author : Marissen
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2023-04-21
  • ISBN : 0197669492
  • Pages : 201 pages

Download or read book Bach Against Modernity written by Marissen and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2023-04-21 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many scholars and music lovers hold that J.S. Bach is a modern figure, as his music seems to speak directly to the aesthetic, spiritual, or emotional concerns of today's listeners. But, by eighteenth-century standards, Bach and his music in fact reflected and forcefully promoted a premodern world and life view. In Bach against Modernity, author Michael Marissen offers a new look at Bach that considers problems of inattentiveness to historical considerations in academic and popular writing about Bach's relation to the present. He also puts forward interpretive reassessments of key individual works by Bach and examines problems in modern comprehension of the partly archaic German texts that Bach set to music. Lastly, he explores Bach's music in relation to premodern versus enlightened attitudes toward Jews and Judaism and enquires into the theological character of Bach's secular instrumental music. Throughout, the book provides overlooked or misunderstood evidence of Bach's private engagement with religious and social issues that he also addressed in his public vocal compositions. Marissen ultimately argues that, while we are free to make use of Bach and his music in whatever ways we find fitting, we ought also to guard against miscasting Bach in our own ideological image and proclaiming the authenticity of that image, and hence its prestige value, in support of our own agendas.
