Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Columbus or the Discovery of America The forty years occurring from A. D. 1490 to A. D. 1530 included five events of a most remarkable character, The Expulsion of the [floors from Spain, - the Discovery of Ame rica by Columbus, -the Conquest of Mexico by Cortes, - the Conquest of Peru by Pizur ro, - and the Reformation by M artin Luther. The first four are intimately connected with the Spanish monarchy; the last, only general ly so. On the condition of Spain, the four produced the most important changes. Why they produced not greater, is a question, the investigation of which will suggest instructive considerations to the student of history, Who reads, not for mere amusement, but that he may the better understand the principles of the ad ministration of Divine Providence. Book Columbus and the Spanish Discovery of America Classic Reprint

Download or read book Columbus and the Spanish Discovery of America Classic Reprint written by Charles Francis Adams and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-02 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Columbus and the Spanish Discovery of America It is, however, wholly aside from my purpose to enter into any controversy over Columbus. It is enough to say that the part he played in the great drama of the discovery and subsequent development of America was no less important than it was dramatic; but, as it is my purpose to show, the real impor tance of his part in the discovery was due not to the man him self, but to those he represented, the company, so to speak, he carried with him to America. Himself a Genoese adven turer, just as ready to sail in the service of France or England as of Portugal or Spain, it so chanced he did sail in the service of Spain, with results for Spain, Europe, the New World, and indeed for the whole human race, to some of which I now propose to refer. It is necessary to say only one word more in regard to the discovery of America. Before doing so I want to repeat and emphasize the belief that nothing which scholars can unearth or critics suggest can, or in my judgment should, detract from the brilliancy of the exploit of Columbus, or the admiration it exacts. He sailed due West into the unknown in order to reach the East. He did it; and he alone did it. The fact that the Norsemen had five centuries before done what he now did in no wise detracts from the splendor of the achievement. The scientific result was his he is entitled to all credit for it. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christopher Columbus, 1492-1892 The four hundredth anniversary of the discovery of America by Christopher Columbus is not far off. It is not to be believed that the fourth centennial of an event that has been of such vast importance to human affairs will be passed by without some public ceremonies. W'hat they should be, it is, perhaps, too early to suggest; but what the country to which belong the honor and glory of the discovery of the New World thinks of such a celebration may not be without interest. The object of this article is, therefore, to show the opinions in Spain regarding this subject. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Four Voyages of Christopher Columbus

Download or read book The Four Voyages of Christopher Columbus written by Christopher Columbus and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2004-02-05 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No gamble in history has been more momentous than the landfall of Columbus's ship the Santa Maria in the Americas in 1492 - an event that paved the way for the conquest of a 'New World'. The accounts collected here provide a vivid narrative of his voyages throughout the Caribbean and finally to the mainland of Central America, although he still believed he had reached Asia. Columbus himself is revealed as a fascinating and contradictory figure, fluctuating from awed enthusiasm to paranoia and eccentric geographical speculation. Prey to petty quarrels with his officers, his pious desire to bring Christian civilization to 'savages' matched by his rapacity for gold, Columbus was nonetheless an explorer and seaman of staggering vision and achievement.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Life of Christopher Columbus Christopher Columbus is a figure in history which presents all the variations, the shiftings, the many-colored lights of a kaleidescope. He has no fixed name in the language of the nation. He is Columbus, Columbo, Colon, Colonus; he is Christoval Colon, and Christo pher Columbus. He is claimed by the residents of several places as having been born in their respective localities; he was descended from noble fami lies, and his father was a humble wool-comber. He was educated at a' university, he assisted his father in his lowly occupation. He was a student, a wool-comber, and a sailor at the immature age of fourteen years. 'he was familiar with geography, and yet, as the facts subsequently established, he scarcely knew its simplest rudiments. These are only a few of the contrarieties in his life as recorded in his tory. He discovered America, and yet he did noth ing of the kind. This Northern half of the American Continent is about to celebrate the four hundredth anniversary of a discovery which he never made. The enormous region known as North America, he did not discover, he never even dreamed of its existence. He did not undertake his voyage influenced by the slightest idea that a new world was to be found; it was a different approach to an old world, India, that he sought, and he died in the belief that it was the coasts of India that he had encountered; hence the name West Indies given to the islands that confronted him as he sailed westward. Download or read book Christopher Columbus and the New World of His Discovery written by Filson Young and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-04 with total page 522 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christopher Columbus and the New World of His Discovery: A Narrative I have received the proofs of the new and revised edition of your Columbus, and I have noted the passages which have been materially altered from the original edition. This book marks an epoch in Columbian literature for in it the hero who discovered the New World is shown for the first time as a living man. You have raised him from the dust of documents and shown him as a human being, a creature of flesh and blood who acts thinks, loves and fights like ourselves, and who is subject, as all real men must be, to passions, mistakes and illusions. You have had the courage to cut loose from the traditional line followed by all the modern biographers of Columbus; and although I differ from you in certain details, I look upon your book as giving a more true and lively picture of the great discoverer than is contained in any other work written on the subject.
