Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Part scrapbook, part memoir, this wonderfully colourful and eloquent diary brims with vivid observations, providing a rare snapshot of what life was like on the Home Front during the First World War. Amateur artist, animal lover and keen writer of letters to the papers, Mrs Bilbrough witnessed the men leaving for war (her husband, Kenneth, a banker in the City, was fortunately too old to be called up); the horses at Waterloo waiting to be transported to France; bombings and airraids; the introduction of the Daylight Saving Bill and food price increases (her consternation as the price of a tin of tongue rose from 2/- to 4/6 is clear!). She also writes at her outrage at the shooting of British nurse Edith Cavell; her sadness when Lord Kitchener is drowned at sea; her alarm as Zeppelins flew over Kent and her anger at the wide-ranging German atrocities. Her relief as war ended is palpable ('PEACE! The armistice is signed, "the day" has come at last! And it is ours!'). Interspersed with her daily jottings are cuttings and cartoons, her own watercolours and drawings and the colourful flags that were sold to raise money for the troops. Charming yet moving, this diary gives us a taste of what it was really like to live through the Great War, seen from the perspective of an acute social observer.

Book The News from Seneca 1888 1918 as Reported in the Keowee Courier

Download or read book The News from Seneca 1888 1918 as Reported in the Keowee Courier written by John Ashton Hester and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2023-01-20 with total page 518 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the late 1800s and early 1900s the Keowee Courier was Oconee County's dominant newspaper. An important aspect of the Courier was weekly reports by community correspondents from throughout the county, who would tell about the day-to-day goings-on in their communities. One of those communities, of course, was Seneca, and this book consists of a compilation of news reports from the Seneca correspondents, spanning the period 1888-1918, specifically from the years 1888, 1889, 1898, 1899, 1900, 1901, 1902, 1903, 1904, 1905, 1906, 1907, 1908, 1909, 1910 1911, 1914 and 1918. Although several excellent Seneca history books have been published, the author feels that this book will add an extra dimension by focusing on the day-to-day, week-to-week, year-to-year goings on as Senecaites (as they were called back then) adapted to the coming of cotton mills, automobiles, electric lights, etc.

Book Shrewsbury in the Great War

Download or read book Shrewsbury in the Great War written by Dorothy Nicolle and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2015-01-30 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wars are not just about the people who fight. Those who wait at home suffer too. This book gives an insight into how the people of Shrewsbury lived through those years. Chapters describe the arrival in the town of Belgian refugees and, not long afterwards, of prisoners of war and the reaction of the local people to them all; the enlistment and later conscription of men and the tribunals held to consider the applications of those who wanted to avoid being called up; the establishment of hospitals in local houses for the treatment of the war wounded; and finally the raising of subscriptions for memorials to those who had been killed.Throughout this period most people tried to live as normal a life as possible, despite the absence of so many of their menfolk. They had to cope with food shortages and new laws that restricted so many aspects of their lives. Alongside this they lived with the constant dread of news from the front.

  • Publisher : University Press of Kansas
  • Release : 2021-10-08
  • ISBN : 0700631755

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: William Scully, an Irishman who was a member of the lesser landed gentry, put his life’s energy into the accumulation of high-quality, low-cost land. He carefully husbanded his inheritance, and in 1850 he traveled to the United States and purchased with personal savings more than 8,000 acres in central Illinois. In 1851 he acquired another 30,000 acres of swampy virgin land. He added to his holdings until, by the late nineteenth century, he had amassed almost 225,000 acres of fertile farm land in Illinois, Kansas, Missouri, and Nebraska, and had become an absentee, alien landlord to some 1,500 tenants. Meanwhile, Scully was involved in lawsuits and violent landlord-tenant confrontations over his Irish holdings, which exceeded 2,000 acres. In one skirmish with his tenants Scully was severely wounded and two of his party were killed. Public remonstrance against Scully’s actions brought his name into notoriety throughout Great Britain. To handle his huge estate in America, Scully employed agents who were strategically located near his land. He inaugurated formal leasing procedures, insisting on elaborate controls: cash rentals, one-year leases, tenant-owned improvements, and soil conservation measures—all unusual for the time. Agitation against his practices as an absentee landlord in the 1880s and 1890s was widely covered in newspapers of the times. Because Scully used crop liens and court action to protect his rights, he was widely denounced for his disregard for his tenants’ welfare. State legislation designed to limit acquisition and inheritance of land by aliens finally forced Scully to gain American citizenship in 1900, six years before his death. Homer Socolofsky’s biography of Scully, the product of more than thirty years of research, provides a narrative and analysis of Scully’s activities as an investor in both Ireland and the United States. It is based on numerous archival and newspaper sources never before analyzed in published works, including private business records of the Scully estate, as well as Socolofsky’s interviews with Scully tenants. Socolofsky traces the acquisitions that led to Scully’s vast wealth, stressing the landlord’s strong will and determination and his unique methods of management. He looks closely at the charges against Scully on both sides of the Atlantic and describes Scully’s court fights and other confrontations with his tenants. Finally, he follows the inheritance of Scully’s multi-million dollar estate from Scully’s death to the present. Scully’s colorful career provides a unique opportunity for studying the economics and politics of land use in this country during the nineteenth century. This volume moves beyond biography to encompass an important segment of the business and agricultural history of the American Midwest.
