Book excerpt: Mistletoe and cookie cutters, step aside. Klutz presents the feel-good activity of the holiday season -- Christmas Velvet Art. The plush format first introduced in Velvet Art now bursts with holiday cheer, just in time for Christmas. Jolly Santas, soaring reindeer, gingerbread houses dripping with icing -- the very best parts of our favorite time of year are here, all dressed up in fabulous black velvet. To add your own flair, just grab one of six vibrant markers that come with the book and start coloring. The napped velvet makes it impossible to go outside the lines, so your coloring comes out crisper and cleaner than ever before. An array of illustrative styles (some fanciful and pretty, others cartoony and cute) offers something for everyone. The book comes with eight pages of festive velvet designs, both full-page illustrations and special punch-out ornaments, greeting cards, a picture frame, and gift tags. Use them to make keepsakes, decorations and one-of-a-kind gifts for Grandma. With Christmas Velvet Art, your coloring comes out as warm and fuzzy as the season itself.

Download or read book Black Velvet Art written by Eric A. Eliason and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2011-01-19 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jesus, matadors, panthers, bandits, Native Americans, movie stars, waifs, and, of course, Elvis are recognized icons of the oft-despised, uber-kitsch art form of black velvet painting. In Black Velvet Art author Eric A. Eliason and photographer Scott Squire present a comprehensive overview of this covertly loved and overtly reviled tradition. In cooperation with a network of artists, collectors, importers, and gallery owners in Tijuana, Los Angeles, Seattle, and Calgary, this book draws from the largest survey of velvet painting ever undertaken. The book traces velvet's historical development as a folk art shaped by both Indigenous traditions as well as Western consumer expectations in such markets as the South Pacific, Southeast Asia, and particularly the US-Mexico border and the black velvet capital of Tijuana. In black velvet, class and taste challenge art as a consumer phenomenon, democratic spirit faces down elitism, reproduction questions originality, and sexuality seduces and provokes religiosity. What is most significant about black velvet art to many Americans is its signaling of the nadir of bad taste. Black velvet is the “anti-art” in many ways. Eliason seeks to explore how and why black velvet serves this function and to examine ways it deserves a glowing redemption.

Book Janet Jackson s The Velvet Rope

Download or read book Janet Jackson s The Velvet Rope written by Ayanna Dozier and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2020-09-03 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The question of control for Black women is a costly one. From 1986 onwards, the trajectory of Janet Jackson's career can be summed up in her desire for control. Control for Janet was never simply just about her desire for economic and creative control over her career but was, rather, an existential question about the desire to control and be in control over her bodily integrity as a Black woman. This book examines Janet's continuation of her quest for control as heard in her sixth album, The Velvet Rope. Engaging with the album, the promotion, the tour, and its accompanying music videos, this study unpacks how Janet uses Black cultural production as an emancipatory act of self-creation that allows her to reconcile with and, potentially, heal from trauma, pain, and feelings of alienation. The Velvet Rope's arc moves audiences to imagine the possibility of what emancipation from oppression--from sexual, to internal, to societal--could look like for the singer and for others. The sexually charged content and themes of abuse, including self-harm and domestic violence, were dismissed as “selling points” for Janet at the time of its release. The album stands out as a revelatory expression of emotional vulnerability by the singer, one that many other artists have followed in the 20-plus years since its release.
