  • Pages : 194 pages

Download or read book Joy to the World written by Scott Hahn and published by Image. This book was released on 2014-10-21 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What could be more familiar than the Christmas story--and yet what could be more extraordinary? The cast of characters is strange and exotic: shepherds and magicians, an emperor and a despot, angels, and a baby who is Almighty God. The strangeness calls for an explanation, and this book provides it by examining the characters and the story in light of the biblical and historical context. Bestselling author Scott Hahn who has written extensively on Scripture and the early Church, brings evidence to light, dispelling some of the mystery of the story. Yet Christmas is made familiar all over again by showing it to be a family story. Christmas, as it appears in the New Testament, is the story of a father, a mother, and a child--their relationships, their interactions, their principles, their individual lives, and their common life. To see the life of this "earthly trinity" is to gaze into heaven.

Book Old St Paul s and Culture

Download or read book Old St Paul s and Culture written by Shanyn Altman and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-09-01 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Old St Paul’s and Culture is an interdisciplinary collection of essays that looks predominantly at the culture of Old St Paul’s and its wider precinct in the early modern period, while also providing important insights into the Cathedral’s medieval institution. The chapters examine the symbolic role of the site in England’s Christian history, the London book trade based in and around St Paul’s, the place of St Paul’s commercial indoor playhouse within the performance culture of sixteenth and seventeenth-century London, and the intersection of religion and politics through events such as civic ceremonies and occasional sermons. Through the organising theme of culture, the authors demonstrate how the site, as well as the people and trades occupying the precinct, can be positioned within wider fields of representations, practices, and social networks. A focus on St Paul’s is therefore about more than just the specific site on Ludgate Hill: it is about those practices and representations connected to it, which either extended beyond or originated in places other than the Cathedral environs. This points to the range of localised, regional, national, and transnational relationships in which the precinct and its people were situated and to which they contributed.

Download or read book Queer Twin Cities written by Twin Cities GLBT Oral History Project (Minn.) and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Twin Cities is home to one of the largest and most vital GLBT populations in the nation--and one of the highest percentages of gay residents in the country. Drawn from the pioneering work of the Twin Cities GLBT Oral History Project--a collective organization of students, scholars, and activists devoted to documenting and interpreting the lives of GLBT people in Minneapolis and St. Paul--"Queer Twin Cities" is a uniquely critical collection of essays on Minnesota's vibrant queer communities, past and present. A rich blend of oral history, archival research, and ethnography, "Queer Twin Cities" uses sexuality to chart connections between people's lives in Minnesota. Topics range from turn-of-the-century Minneapolis amid moral reform--including the highly publicized William Williams murder trial and efforts to police Bridge Square, aka 'skid row'--to northern Minnesota and the importance of male companionship among lumber workers, and to postwar life, when the increased visibility of queer life went hand in hand with increased regulation, repression, and violence. Other essays present a portrait of early queer spaces in the Twin Cities, such as Kirmser's Bar, the Viking Room, and the Persian Palms, and the proliferation of establishments like the Dugout and the 19 Bar. Exploring the activism of GLBT Two-Spirit indigenous people, the antipornography movements of the 1980s, and the role of gay men in the gentrification of Minneapolis neighborhoods, this volume brings the history of queer life and politics in the Twin Cities into fascinating focus. Engaging and revelatory, "Queer Twin Cities" offers a critical analysis of local history and community and fills a glaring omission in the culture and history of Minnesota, looking not only to a remarkable past but to our collective future.

An Unexpected Christmas tells the old familiar story from a whole new perspective, with a dash of humor and plenty of warm fuzzies, this story will become a Christmas read-aloud favorite. From the Author, Simone Graham: "I originally wrote this as a Christmas gift for my children; it is illustrated with the children of the world (including my own) as Heaven's angels. I hope you enjoy reading this book as much as I enjoyed imagining it for you." The story was selected to be made into a short film by St Pauls' in Auckland for their Christmas event, where it was an instant hit on YouTube in Christmas 2012. Book Christmas Day

  • Author : Paul Durcan
  • Publisher : Random House
  • Release : 2011-09-30
  • ISBN : 1446484491
  • Pages : 85 pages

Download or read book Christmas Day written by Paul Durcan and published by Random House. This book was released on 2011-09-30 with total page 85 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For most of us Christmas is the season of huge helpings of good food, good drink, and with luck, good cheer, as the rituals of cracker-pulling, present-giving and happy or sulphurous family reunions fizzle and bang through the long afternoon. For anyone who has ever had too much of it, or felt out of it, or wanted to be out of it, or even succeeded in being out of it then been unexpectedly rescued by a good friend, this book-length poem contains a lifeline of humour and sanity in a world run seasonally mad. It is a funny, subversive, melancholy, self-mocking conversation between two men - Paul and Frank - in the top storey flat of a Dublin apartment block; a Stations of Christmas under the influence of "woman-hunger". Once read, Christmas Day itself will never be the same again. The volume also contains a second new work, "A Goose in the Frost", a tribute to Seamus Heaney on winning the Nobel Prize for Literature.
