Book Advent Christmas New Year Easter

Download or read book Advent Christmas New Year Easter written by Robert Stuart Macarthur and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-20 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Advent, Christmas, New Year, Easter: And Other Sermons The sermons comprising this volume were, for the most part, preached on consecutive Sunday mornings or evenings. Those on the Wells of the Bible were preached during the summer; the others, with the exception of the Anniversary Sermon, were preached quite recently in the regular order Of the author's ministry. The sermon com memorating the thirty-fifth anniversary Of the pas torate, although somewhat out of date as compared with the other sermons, is given because of the intrinsic interest in the facts it gives concerning the kingdom of God. In their publication it has been thought best to retain the style of pulpit address. The author sincerely hopes that these sermons may help all readers to makedue preparation for the Second Advent of Christ, whose first Advent the earlier sermons in the volume are intended to honor. Book Christmas Sermons Classic Reprint

Download or read book Christmas Sermons Classic Reprint written by Francis John McConnell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-16 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christmas Sermons This passage has ordinarily been regarded as the first glimpse of Christ and His work to be caught from the Old Testament. It has long been called the first of the Messianic passages. Our fathers saw in these words a definite prediction of the coming of Jesus and of His triumph over evil. Christ was the seed of the woman to whom the author looked for the world's redemption. In later days the critical students have swung far to the Opposite direction. Accord ing to such students the author is not think ing of Christ at all. He is thinking simply of the con ict raised between man and evil at the very beginning of human existence. Download or read book Advent in St Paul s Vol 1 of 2 written by Henry Parry Liddon and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-24 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Advent in St. Paul's, Vol. 1 of 2: Sermons Bearing Chiefly on the Two Comings of Our Lord When, three years ago, the author published some sermons preached in St. Paul's during the Easter Season, it was suggested that something of the same kind might be attempted for other portions of the Christian year. The present publication, accordingly, is devoted to the two great truths which the Church of Christ proposes for our consideration during Advent; our Lord's First Coming among men as the Son of a virgin-mother, and His Second Coming in the clouds of heaven to judge the living and the dead. A. Third volume should follow, consecrated to the festival of Christmas and to the close of the civil year. In these two volumes there has been no attempt to arrange the sermons on any other principle than that of the order in which they were preached. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sermons for the Christian Year The following Sermons, with one exception 3, were preached by the revered Author to his village flock at Hursley, and that mostly between the years 1840 and 1855, when he began to preach extempore. After that time, or at least 1856, there are, I am informed, very few finished sermons. Up to that time, they are as a rule perfectly finished. Book Seventeen Sermons on the Nativity Classic Reprint

Download or read book Seventeen Sermons on the Nativity Classic Reprint written by Lancelot Andrewes and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Seventeen Sermons on the Nativity In this volume of sermons preached upon Christmas Day, his firm grasp of the Doctrine of the Incarnation is clearly manifested and the close relation between the apprehension of this Verity, and the place in worship of the Blessed Eucharist, is particularly illustrated. To treat with fresh ness the same topic on seventeen different occasions is, as most preachers will allow, no mean test of power 5 but in these sermons of Bishop Andrewes no reader can fail to be charmed with the constant variety of treatment displayed in them, the great wealth of Scriptural illustration, and the profound depth of insight, which detects in the most seemingly insignificant details, matter of rich dog matic truth. He cuts and polishes a text, like a jeweller a diamond, and the rays of truth from its heart of light flash from every facet. As models of division and treatment, and as mines of learning and eloquent illustration, these sermons are invaluable to a preacher, and with a view to speciallyemphasising this value, an index of Scriptural references has been added to this edition. To the general reader they appeal as devout homilies, which gather many truths about the central doctrine of the Holy Incarnation, and build up Christian conduct and temper upon the sure foundation of dogmatic instruction. Book Advent in St Paul s Vol 2 of 2

Download or read book Advent in St Paul s Vol 2 of 2 written by H. P. Liddon and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-23 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Advent in St. Paul's, Vol. 2 of 2: Sermons Bearing Chiefly on the Two Comings of Our Lord It is on this general principle that we may do well, on this and the three following Sundays in Advent Season, to place ourselves under the guidance and inspiration of the words of the shepherd-prophet Amos: Prepare to meet thy God, 0 Israel. Certainly, when Christmas Day comes, we shall be as far as possible from feeling that we have got to the bottom of this solemn and momentous warning. Four short half-hours on four successive Sunday afternoons will not do for us what a month of uninterrupted meditation failed to do for the old Egyptian recluses. But it is, at least, possible that we may, some of us, see some new flash of light passing across the surface, the text, the sound, of very familiar words which have lost, if for us they ever had, their true meaning. It is possible that, by God's grace, some of us may date from this Advent our setting about a work which has as yet been neglected or quite forgotten; the work of pre paring to meet our God. A warning like this appeals to a great deal in human character; it touches us on many sides of thought and life. To-day let me begin by, and confine myself to, observing that it appeals with particular force to our sense of prudence. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christmas Eve: A Dialogue on the Celebration of Christmas The Nativity of Christ, as the visible incarnation of the Redeemer, has always been recognised as the distinctive starting-point of the Christian life in time. Around it as a living centre in the stream of history, all Christian experience has turned; and it has thus been accepted in Christendom as dividing the whole life of mankind into its two great periods of the old and the new, the natural and the spiritual, the physical and the regenerated. When the Church was beginning to constitute itself and to realize the full significance of its mission in the world, it could not but attain to a more definite consciousness of its relations to the natural changes and spiritual transitions of the life which it embodied and diffused. The historical development of this consciousness was mainly determined by reference to the cardinal manifestations of the Divine life in its Founder, and the necessity of an orderly spiritualization of the living humanity it absorbed and unfolded.
