Book Agatha Christie The Finished Portrait

Download or read book Agatha Christie The Finished Portrait written by Dr Andrew Norman and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2010-12-26 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Agatha Christie: The Finished Portrait, Dr Andrew Norman delves deep into the crime writer's past to discover the desperate insecurity that sparked her disappearance in 1926. Agatha Christie suffered from recurrent nightmares where she was petrified that one or other of her family would be replaced by a terrifying figure called the 'Gunman' and lost to her forever. She was reminded of this figure both when her father died, and when her husband Archie demanded a divorce. This event precipitated such a crisis in Agatha's mind that she became temporarily unhinged. She lost her memory and assumed a new identity: that of her husband's mistress. Only now, thirty years after Agatha's death, is it possible to explain fully, in the light of scientific knowledge, her behaviour during her troubled disappearance, when she lived incognito in a Harrogate hotel. One of Agatha's novels, Unfinished Portrait, which is largely autobiographical, gives a unique insight into how the heroine, Celia (who is really Agatha in disguise), may have managed finally to rid herself of the Gunman and go on to lead a happier and more fulfilled life. By deciphering clues from this and her other works, Agatha Christie: The Finished Portrait sheds light on what is perhaps the greatest mystery of all to be associated with Agatha Christie, namely that of the person herself.

Book excerpt: 'Laura Thompson's outstanding biography . . . is a pretty much perfect capturing of a life' - Kate Mosse It has been 100 years since Agatha Christie wrote her first novel and created the formidable Hercule Poirot. In this biography, Laura Thompson describes the Edwardian world in which she grew up, explores the relationships she had, including those with her two husbands and daughter, and investigates the mysteries still surrounding Christie's life - including her disappearance in 1926. Agatha Christie is a mystery and writing about her is a detection job in itself. But, with access to all of Christie's letters, papers and writing notebooks, as well as interviews with her grandson, daughter, son-in-law and their living relations, Thompson is able to unravel not only the detailed workings of Christie's detective fiction, but the truth behind her private life as well. During those eleven days, did she have time to write a play? Jordan Kelly needs a new job and a new place to live. She’s back in Harrison Falls, New York, living with her not so law-abiding uncles, in debt thanks to a credit card–stealing ex and pending grad school loans. Enter the perfect job, a research position that includes room and board, which will allow her to spend her days hunting down rare mysteries for an avid book collector. There’s just one problem: her employer, Vera Van Alst—the most hated citizen of Harrison Falls. Jordan’s first assignment is to track down a rumored Agatha Christie play. It seems easy enough, but Jordan soon finds out that her predecessor was killed while looking for it, and there is still someone out there willing to murder to keep the play out of Vera’s hands. Jordan’s new job is good…but is it worth her life?

Book Assurto Christie Rise of Vidhiputra

Download or read book Assurto Christie Rise of Vidhiputra written by Abilash Chandran, Supratick Basu and published by Notion Press. This book was released on with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was a period rife with chaos and destruction, and the whole world moved directionless, towards a definite path of selfannihilation. In these hours of distress, when the guardians of the great emperor were on the verge of disintegration and the power hungry fought for absolute control, there came a sliver of hope in the form of two brothers, an ancient prophecy, and a simple adventure trail, which turned into a quest that could alter the fate of the world. The search for the answers to a simple riddle opened up the glorious past and all that was concealed in the passage of time. Along with it rode danger and temptation as the dark forces waited in the shadows to grasp that which will either give absolute power to destroy, or open a gateway of restoration and peace in the world. As the brothers trysted with the menace that pursued them, they met with love, deception, betrayal and death. Time was the only witness that would reveal, whether the prophecy – Rise of Vidhiputra – would be fulfilled.

Book Agatha Christie

Download or read book Agatha Christie written by Agatha Christie and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2021-08-03 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Poirot to Miss Marple, from The Mousetrap to Witness for the Prosecution, this a fascinating look at the life and work of Agatha Christie, the world's most successful and popular crime writer. Agatha Christie was not only the most successful author of detective stories the world has ever known, she was also a mystery in herself, giving only the rarest interviews—declining absolutely to become any sort of public figure—and a mystery, too, in the manner in which she achieved her astonishing success. Distinguished crime novelist (and acclaimed critic) H. R. F. Keating brings together a dozen noted writers from both sides of the Atlantic to throw light on the ever-intriguing Dame Agatha. Some essays analyze Christie’s art itself; some explain the reasons for her success—not just the books, but also in film and theatre. The myriad of critical angles explored here are penetrating, affectionate, enthusiastic, analytical, and even funny. Together, they give an almost unique insight into the life and work of the First Lady of Crime. Includes essays by Sophie Hannah, H. R. F. Keating, Elizabeth Walter, Julian Symons, Edmund Crispin, Michael Gilbert, Emma Lathen, Colin Watson, Celia Fremlin, Dorothy B. Hughes, J. C. Trewin, Philip Jenkinson, William Weaver, and Christianna Brand.
