Book English Irish Scottish Silver at the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute

Download or read book English Irish Scottish Silver at the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute written by Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute and published by Hudson Hills. This book was released on 1997 with total page 606 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this stunning catalog, Wees, curator of decorative arts at the Clark Art Institute, shares her extensive knowledge of silver. Robert Sterling Clark, who established the Art Institute in 1955, preferred Huguenot silver? especially that of Paul de Lamerie? so his collection, which contains typical objects from the early 16th to the mid-20th centuries, is especially rich in 18th-century examples. Wees arranges this collection according to general function ("Dining," "Lighting," etc.) and prefaces each chapter with exhaustively footnoted essays. She accompanies each item with crisp black-and-white photographs, a wealth of description, and helpful commentary. Analogous to Kathryn Buhler's standard catalog of American silver in Boston's Museum of Fine Arts, this is a wonderful tool for researching makers and hallmarks, comparing stylistic elements, or just marveling at the beauty of an extraordinary collection. While not intended to be a historical compendium, this informative, visual feast belongs in all silver reference collections and will also certainly appeal to individual collectors. 19 colour & 1,222 b/w illustrations

Book Summary Catalogue of European Decorative Arts in the J Paul Getty Museum

Download or read book Summary Catalogue of European Decorative Arts in the J Paul Getty Museum written by Gillian Wilson and published by Getty Publications. This book was released on 2002-03-07 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: J. Paul Getty had a passion for the exquisitely made furniture and decorative objects of eighteenth-century France, which he began collecting in the 1930s. Gillian Wilson, curator of decorative arts since 1971, has broadened and strengthened the collection, adding Boulle furniture, mounted oriental porcelain, tapestries, clocks, ceramics, and more. In the 1980s and 1990s the Museum continued to enlarge its decorative arts holdings, creating a European sculpture department in 1984 and adding glass, maiolica, goldsmiths’ work, pietre dure, and furniture from Italy and Northern Europe. This book is a revised and expanded edition of Decorative Arts: An Illustrated Summary Catalogue of the Collection of the J. Paul Getty Museum (1993). In addition to more than forty recent acquisitions—among these four wall sconces from Versailles that once belonged to Marie Antoinette and an elaborate upholstered bed from the collection of Karl Lagerfeld—it includes the results of years of research. Designed for scholars, students, and devotees of the decorative arts, this volume provides a comprehensive look at the Getty's fine collection.

Book The Curse of the Marquis de Sade

Download or read book The Curse of the Marquis de Sade written by Joel Warner and published by Crown. This book was released on 2023-02-21 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES EDITORS’ CHOICE • The captivating, deeply reported true story of how one of the most notorious novels ever written—Marquis de Sade’s 120 Days of Sodom—landed at the heart of one of the biggest scams in modern literary history. “Reading The Curse of the Marquis de Sade, with the Marquis, the sabotage of rare manuscript sales, and a massive Ponzi scheme at its center, felt like a twisty waterslide shooting through a sleazy and bizarre landscape. This book is wild.”—Adam McKay, Academy Award–winning filmmaker Described as both “one of the most important novels ever written” and “the gospel of evil,” 120 Days of Sodom was written by the Marquis de Sade, a notorious eighteenth-century aristocrat who waged a campaign of mayhem and debauchery across France, evaded execution, and inspired the word “sadism,” which came to mean receiving pleasure from pain. Despite all his crimes, Sade considered this work to be his greatest transgression. The original manuscript of 120 Days of Sodom, a tiny scroll penned in the bowels of the Bastille in Paris, would embark on a centuries-spanning odyssey across Europe, passing from nineteenth-century banned book collectors to pioneering sex researchers to avant-garde artists before being hidden away from Nazi book burnings. In 2014, the world heralded its return to France when the scroll was purchased for millions by Gérard Lhéritier, the self-made son of a plumber who had used his savvy business skills to upend France’s renowned rare-book market. But the sale opened the door to vendettas by the government, feuds among antiquarian booksellers, manuscript sales derailed by sabotage, a record-breaking lottery jackpot, and allegations of a decade-long billion-euro con, the specifics of which, if true, would make the scroll part of France’s largest-ever Ponzi scheme. Told with gripping reporting and flush with deceit and scandal, The Curse of the Marquis de Sade weaves together the sweeping odyssey of 120 Days of Sodom and the spectacular rise and fall of Lhéritier, once the “king of manuscripts” and now known to many as the Bernie Madoff of France. At its center is an urgent question for all those who cherish the written word: As the age of handwriting comes to an end, what do we owe the original texts left behind?

  • Pages : 132 pages

Download or read book Senile Dementia written by Bernard Ineichen and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concept of dementia has itself been the subject of increasing refinement and precision in definition and diagnosis. Two important sub-types have been identified: Alzheimer's disease and multiple-infarct dementia. Alzheimer's disease or Senile Dementia of the Alzheimer Type (SDA T), arises out of changes in the brain which are as yet poorly understood and identifiable with certainty only at post mortem examination. This type of dementia has been named after Alois Alzheimer, who first identified these changes, in the earliest years of this century. Alzheimer's is the commonest type of identified dementia. The second commonest type is multi-infarct dementia (MID), which follows a stroke or strokes affecting the relevant part of the brain. Like SDA T, it can be diagnosed with certainty only after death, although Jorm (1987, Ch. 8) reviews progress in using various types of tests which can suggest, if not confirm, its presence during the sufferer's lifetime. As will be shown in Chapter 2, some populations appear to reverse the general picture and exhibit more MID than SDAT. Many dementia sufferers cannot, even after a post-mortem examination, be neatly categorized as one or the other of these sub-types. A considerable uncertain 'grey area' of dementia remains at present very poorly understood. Some elderly people develop dementia as a side-effect of known physical disease. Some of these conditions are curable. Care of the demented person has traditionally taken place in the community: hospitalization is a fairly recent innovation.
