Book Woman s World Woman s Empire

Download or read book Woman s World Woman s Empire written by Ian Tyrrell and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2014-03-19 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Frances Willard founded the Woman's Christian Temperance Union in 1884 to carry the message of women's emancipation throughout the world. Based in the United States, the WCTU rapidly became an international organization, with affiliates in forty-two countries. Ian Tyrrell tells the extraordinary story of how a handful of women sought to change the mores of the world -- not only by abolishing alcohol but also by promoting peace and attacking prostitution, poverty, and male control of democratic political structures. In describing the work of Mary Leavitt, Jessie Ackermann, and other temperance crusaders on the international scene, Tyrrell identifies the tensions generated by conflict between the WCTU's universalist agenda and its own version of an ideologically and religiously based form of cultural imperialism. The union embraced an international and occasionally ecumenical vision that included a critique of Western materialism and imperialism. But, at the same time, its mission inevitably promoted Anglo-American cultural practices and Protestant evangelical beliefs deemed morally superior by the WCTU. Tyrrell also considers, from a comparative perspective, the peculiar links between feminism, social reform, and evangelical religion in Anglo-American culture that made it so difficult for the WCTU to export its vision of a woman-centered mission to other cultures. Even in other Western states, forging links between feminism and religiously based temperance reform was made virtually impossible by religious, class, and cultural barriers. Thus, the WCTU ultimately failed in its efforts to achieve a sober and pure world, although its members significantly shaped the values of those countries in which it excercised strong influence. As and urgently needed history of the first largescale worldwide women's organization and non-denominational evangelical institution, Woman's World / Woman's Empire will be a valuable resource to scholars in the fields of women's studies, religion, history, and alcohol and temperance studies.

Book Aquinas and the Infused Moral Virtues

Download or read book Aquinas and the Infused Moral Virtues written by Angela McKay Knobel and published by University of Notre Dame Pess. This book was released on 2021-10-15 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study locates Aquinas’s theory of infused and acquired virtue in his foundational understanding of nature and grace. Aquinas holds that all the virtues are bestowed on humans by God along with the gift of sanctifying grace. Since he also holds, with Aristotle, that we can create virtuous dispositions in ourselves through our own repeated good acts, a question arises: How are we to understand the relationship between the virtues God infuses at the moment of grace and virtues that are gradually acquired over time? In this important book, Angela McKay Knobel provides a detailed examination of Aquinas’s theory of infused moral virtue, with special attention to the question of how the infused and acquired moral virtues are related. Part 1 examines Aquinas’s own explicit remarks about the infused and acquired virtues and considers whether and to what extent a coherent “theory” of the relationship between the infused and acquired virtues can be found in Aquinas. Knobel argues that while Aquinas says almost nothing about how the infused and acquired virtues are related, he clearly does believe that the “structure” of the infused virtues mirrors that of the acquired in important ways. Part 2 uses that structure to evaluate existing interpretations of Aquinas and argues that no existing account adequately captures Aquinas’s most fundamental commitments. Knobel ultimately argues that the correct account lies somewhere between the two most commonly advocated theories. Written primarily for students and scholars of moral philosophy and theology, the book will also appeal to readers interested in understanding Aquinas’s theory of virtue.

Book Jesus the Bridegroom

Download or read book Jesus the Bridegroom written by Brant James Pitre and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Jesus the Bridegroom, Brant Pitre once again taps into the wells of Jewish Scripture and tradition, and unlocks the secrets of what is arguably the most well-known symbol of the Christian faith: the cross of Christ. In this thrilling exploration, Pitre shows how the suffering and death of Jesus was far more than a tragic Roman execution. Instead, the Passion of Christ was the fulfillment of ancient Jewish prophecies of a wedding, when the God of the universe would wed himself to humankind in an everlasting nuptial covenant. To be sure, most Christians are familiar with the apostle Paul's teaching that Christ is the 'Bridegroom' and the Church is the 'Bride'. But what does this really mean? And what would ever possess Paul to compare the death of Christ to the love of a husband for his wife? If you would have been at the Crucifixion, with Jesus hanging there dying, is that how you would have described it? How could a first-century Jew like Paul, who knew how brutal Roman crucifixions were, have ever compared the execution of Jesus to a wedding? And why does he refer to this as the "great mystery" (Ephesians 5:32)? As Pitre shows, the key to unlocking this mystery can be found by going back to Jewish Scripture and tradition and seeing the entire history of salvation, from Mount Sinai to Mount Calvary, as a divine love story between Creator and creature, between God and Israel, between Christ and his bride--a story that comes to its climax on the wood of a Roman cross. In the pages of Jesus the Bridegroom, dozens of familiar passages in the Bible--the Exodus, the Song of Songs, the Wedding at Cana, the Woman at the Well, the Last Supper, the Crucifixion, and even the Second Coming at the End of Time--are suddenly transformed before our eyes. Indeed, when seen in the light of Jewish Scripture and tradition, the life of Christ is nothing less than the greatest love story ever told.

Purchasers can download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated.1884 Excerpt: ... CHAPTER XXXIV. FAITH AND PHYSIC. THAT numbers of men abstain from intoxicating liquors who are but little if at all influenced by Bible teaching needs no proof. They have no faith in the drink, and wishing to make the best of this life they take care of the present.. Numbers more abstain who have faith in the drink, but believing themselves called upon to abstain from things lawful and useful in themselves that they may be useful to others, they practise what to them is a considerable self-denial. In either of these motives there is sufficient reason and abundant vitality to keep alive the practice of teetotalism. There is, however, yet another class, and not by any means a small one. These not only believe the drink to be dangerous, but worthless, and they have the clearest and most abiding conviction that both Church and State are called upon to take hold with no gloved hand of this delusion to man and enemy to God: of that number I am one. That men are influenced by different reasons and act from different motives is no new thing, and our platform is broad enough for all. It is therefore a needless and meddlesome interference with individual liberty to ask for reasons and question motives. It is enough that the action in itself is right. We have from the first been more or less subject to amendments and improvements, but they none of them change our nature, and never will. We differ in our form of thought, as we do in our form of face, and as we agree to differ in the one why should we not do so in the other'? As temperance teachers we have nothing to do with motives; if it were so, there would be plenty to trouble us in connection with the working of the different societies: those concerned have thought it wise in this way to put forth their strength, a...

Book True Christianity False Religions

Download or read book True Christianity False Religions written by Lloyd A. Davidson and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do you really believe in the only true and living God? Are you tired of false religion and now hunger and thirst after righteousness? Are you deceived and not sure if you are a true Christian? Are you 100% sure that Jesus Christ is indeed alive? You may attend church or religious services but have you ever truly worshipped God? Do you know God for yourself? Did you know that you can be 100% sure you will spend eternity in Heaven the moment Christ enters your body? Is your fiancé or spouse a recipient of the 'Spirit of Truth' (in the Lord), so as to prevent you from ever being divorced biblically? Do you really know the truth and the whole truth about Homosexuality? Do you have divine permission to worship God? Did you know that even if you are confirmed or water baptized you cannot worship God in a church, in a cathedral, in a synagogue, in a mosque, in a temple or as you wish? He can only be worshipped in spirit and in truth with the 'Spirit of Truth', after being born of his Spirit through the atoning blood of Christ his Son. This powerfully inspiring book answers all those crucial questions according to Christ that any sensible person should know before attempting to worship the one and only true God. It also addresses many controversial issues that confront the cutting edge of Christian living in this evolving, secular world, including solutions to spousal abuse. Before Christ revealed Himself to me, I did not know if Heaven was real and I thought hell was just an illusion. However, after Christ revealed Himself to me, I discovered Heaven is real and hell is no joke. This book expounds to the core, pure religion, salvation and the imperativeness of a totally surrendered heart in seeking God. It offers to every person (without Christ) an opportunity to know God supernaturally and diligently exploit his power and love. Believing in God or Christ is not enough; you must also know them both supernaturally to make it into the kingdom of Heaven. These pages are filled with anointed, intricate, prolific, corrective, expository, edifying revelations (spiritual insights) and teachings that many Christian ministers have not had the courage, tenacity or conviction to address and discuss with clarity and implicit intrusiveness. Virtually, combined with a passionate desire to speak the truth always, it is the equivalent of the best (simplified) Bible translation for the purpose of personal Bible study, soul winning and revival you have ever laid your hands on. Read and adhered to 'for such a time as this', it will set your mind, body, soul and spirit on divine fire. The teachings and insights will also profoundly permeate your conscience, heart, mind and soul as you ingest every word. Cutting like a two-edged sword, it compels a person to experience the divine presence of the true and living God. This book is definitely the ultimate key to true worship and an urgent wake up call to all of humanity. Every person that believes in God ought to secure a copy of this book or present it as a gift to a non-Christian.

Excerpt: ...when, in response to the petitions of the Women's Christian Temperance Union, and the hard work of Colonel Grace, J. L. Palmer, "a Blind Tiger." 341 and others, the last Legislature said to our people, ' Up, and at 'em!' you may be sure we didn't stand on ceremony. The women have displayed a loyalty and earnestness beyond all praise, and in three-fourths of our counties prohibition is the law. We are fortunate in having the press and the lawyers almost solid on our side, as well as the ministers, and so we get thorough enforcement." As we fly along on the train from town to town, it is a strange and blessed sight to see every saloon--and there are always so many in sight from the depot--hermetically sealed, the lonesomest looking places I have ever beheld outside the glimpse I had in Egypt of the Desert of Sahara. A good minister seated behind me--the Rev. Mr. Boone--has just shown me his elegant goldheaded cane, given him by the temperance people of Morrillton in return for his hard work in getting up the death-dealing petition that closed out the liquor traffic there. Perhaps their appreciation was enhanced by the fact that, as the good man was leaving their town when his work was ended, a venomous saloon-keeper came to the depot and spat in his face. Having done this, the miserable fellow took out his pistol and said, " Come on; I'm ready." "Oh, no," replied the good-natured-looking minister, "I should be no match for you in the use of the weapons you have chosen." Just now we passed a town at which the temperance man pointed triumphantly, saying, " They had a blind tiger here" (meaning the secret sale of grog),"but the good folks closed him out yesterday to the tune of $500...
