Download or read book The Bible in Christian North Africa written by Jonathan P. Yates and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2023-11-06 with total page 899 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This second volume delves into the intricate dynamics that surrounded the use of Scripture by North African Christians from the late-fourth to the mid-seventh century CE. It focuses on the multivalent ways in which Scripture was incorporated into the fabric of ecclesial existence and theological reflection, as well as on Scripture’s role in informing and supporting these Christians’ decision-making processes. This volume also highlights the intricate theological and philosophical deliberations that were carried out between and among influential North African Christian leaders and scholars—in diverse cultural and geopolitical settings—while paying attention to the complex manner in which these Scripture-laden discourses intersected the wide variety of religious opinions and ecclesiastical and/or theological movements that so clearly marked this region in this era.

Book The Fate of the Dead in Early Third Century North African Christianity

Download or read book The Fate of the Dead in Early Third Century North African Christianity written by Eliezer Gonzalez and published by Mohr Siebeck. This book was released on 2014-02-24 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ideology and imagery in the Passion of Perpetua are mediated heavily by traditional Graeco-Roman culture; in particular, by traditional notions of the afterlife and of the ascent of the soul. This context for understanding the Passion of Perpetua aligns well with the available material evidence, and with the writings of Tertullian, with whose ideology the text of Perpetua is in an implicit polemical dialogue.Eliezer Gonzalez analyzes how the Passion of Perpetua provides us with early literary evidence of an environment in which the Graeco-Roman and Christian cults of the dead, including the cults of the martyrs and saints, appear to be very much aligned. He also shows that the text of the Passion of Perpetua and the writings of Tertullian provide insights into an early stage in the polemic between these two conceptualisations of the afterlife of the righteous.

Book Christianity and Traditional Medicine in Northern Malawi

Download or read book Christianity and Traditional Medicine in Northern Malawi written by Chimwemwe Harawa and published by . This book was released on 2023-04-04 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The coming of Christianity to Africa is one of the significant movements of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. This books is about the participation of missionaries in the healing ministry. Currently three forms of healing can be identified in Malawi: biomedicinal, traditional healing and spiritualist healing of the Christian or Islamic type. Of these, the missionaries brought the biomedicinal system that at that time was a new system of healing, which was attractive to the local people. This new system was introduced in the context of the traditional healing that relied on traditional medicine and the medicine person, the traditional healer. The modern system of healing and its medicine went hand in hand with evangelization. The traditional healing system and its medicines were discredited and were associated with heathenism. However, its use is still flourishing even among those who confess to be Christians. This book contributes to our understanding of the dynamics that have been at play in the intersection between Christianity and African indigenous societies in Malawi.
